    Hey Rick, I'm a single digit handicap and I play forged one lengths. In my experience the long irons do take off a little bit lower, the short irons do take off a little higher. I find that the trajectory issue is outweighed by the greatly increased consistency in strike. In my experience higher handicaps need the extra clubhead speed in the longer irons offered by a standard set of clubs, and pros are typically very traditionalist and hate the minor differences in ball flight. I think the sweet spot for one lengths is scratch handicap to about 10 or 12, with moderate to fast swing speeds. I think for this crowd they'll find they hit the ball flush more often - and score better - and that takes precedence over minor trajectory differences. Also, according to Pete, progressively weighted shafts all-but-eliminate the trajectory issues.
    Hope this helps,
    Kyle

      I have a similar opinion. I too play forged one length and am a single digit handicap. The number one thing about these irons are they are CONSISTENT. Consistent length, stance, tempo, weight, etc. I don't get to swing a club everyday, usually only about 6-8 rounds a month. The difference in trajectory and carry length on a 5 iron is a non-issue when your biggest goal is a green in regulation. My goal is to shoot par! How will I accomplish this? More greens in regulation, more 1 and 2 putts. These clubs really help me get it done. I think Rick's review is a flawed by only comparing the trajectories of the individual irons, it's truly not the point of why people want to play them.

      I imagine any player of Rick's ability would have difficult time with the clubs. Maybe for this review, he should have brought back the guy from a few years ago that was a mid to high handicapper and let him have a go to see the difference.

    "The concept with these is to play the same ball position as a 7 iron, but I'm not going to do that with the 5 iron because I dont want to give an honest try so I will proceed to move the ball forward, get thin contact resulting in low flight and a dropoff in carry then will go on to complain about that and how I don't think these work well."
    C'mon Rick. That's like you testing a driver but not using a tee and ragging on it for poor performance. Use the tool as intended.

      @christophersiegert8035 Před 5 lety +7

      Yeah this is baffling. I've seen plenty of Rick's videos and he obviously hits the ball farther than I do on a regular basis. But my carry on the single length 5 iron is what his was - and that's b/c I hit it as it's supposed to be hit and he does not. He clearly influenced this b/c he just wouldn't do it.

      Too be fair I have f7 single length irons and my 5 and 6 iron have a much lower flight. They do however sit down nicely and are super consistent. Give and take. The gap wedge amd pitching wedge are massively high and currently are out of my bag. Im going to try and add them back when I can get used to looking at them at address.... That gap wedge looks way to ugly for me at address.

      @kidkoffee4799 Před 5 lety +19

      Agreed. Seeing this a lot. You could tell by the tone of his voice that he was trying not to like these before he took his first swing. I mean, if I was already a great iron player/scratch golfer, I wouldn’t think about trying these. That’s the problem with the vast majority of these professional reviews. I’m a 12 handicap and these are like magic for me. The “look” doesn’t bother me one bit, nor does the ball flight because they are dead straight for me! If my first round with these is any indication, I’ll be a single-digit by season’s end. To each his own...

    I love your review, but I think you missed the point here a bit. These clubs aren't being marketed towards a Pro, they're marketed towards a higher handicap player. In my case I haven't played in many years, and tbh when I was playing regularly I struggled with longer irons, and my scores reflected this.
    I had grown up as a kid playing Par 3, and loving it. I never had a need for anything above a 7 iron, and it honed my short game. I recently decided to play a round with a mate, and he has the F8 One's, which he doesn't like, so he let me use them. To me they felt totally natural in the Hybrid and 5-9, and I played the best 18 holes of my life. I ended up buying them of him, added wedges of standard length, and am now loving the full length game as much as I did Par 3 as a kid. Loosing 6 yards to you may be an issue, but actually making clean consistent contact has meant the world to me.

    Rick, with respect, if you don't put the ball in the 7i postion how would you expect to get the proper angle of attack for the 5i? The whole purpose is to give the ball the same postion and let the loft do its job and have the same angle of attack. Have you hit the 5i at the 7i position and seen any difference? They absolutely work and take the variables out of the different length irons. And really, if you worry about the 8-pw length being longer, i say try it. Same goes for the longer irons. You will find them easier to hit consistantly even if your mind says no. Just try before responding.

    I changed my callway x forged 2018 irons for these one length irons and I’ve shot the lowest round ever with these! The control I get from these irons is amazing! And if you hit them how they are meant to be hit! All In the same ball position!!!!! They perform like no other clubs! My long irons go high land soft. My mid irons go mid high and with my wedge I have so much control and can do what ever I want with them. Not to mention I’m getting amazing spin numbers!!!
    I’m shocked everyone doesn’t make the switch! Being able to have one swing through the bag is not even a question!!!
    Again! Swing them how they are meant to be swong and don’t change things because you “feel” you need to. BecUse then you aren’t really swinging a one length anymore.

    I just recently got my hands on a brand new, relatively cheap set of F8 One Length (5-PW) and bought them of the shelf, although I knew your review. I have to say I absolutely LOVE them. I like the looks (although I would prefer the regular F8`s black instead of blue) and I`m totally into the feel, especially of the 5 and 6 (forged face). I don`t have any kind of issues with trajectory in the 5&6 and I really like the extra height in the low end - makes them stop on a dime. I admit, the P felt superstrange in the first couple of shots, but got used to them quickly. And I have a high handicap of 26.5 - but I can tell it`s more consistant than with my Tailormade RocketBallz and connect will for sure help me to get to know my game a lot better. Can`t wait to improve my handicap with those!

    Rick - I think the biggest issue for you is that it is a change from your current comfort level. If you were used to playing single length and then switch to traditional, you would have the same negative comments. However, for a new golfer or a high handicapper that struggles with long irons, learning and grooving one swing is much easier than different swings for different length clubs. These in my experience are great for beginners as you get a much more consistent ball strike. For an accomplished player such as yourself not a big deal. For newbies and less frequent or accomplished players it is a huge deal.

    Rick, Ive been a loyal viewer for a long whilst and love watching your videos. This is the first one i found to be annoying and not really a fair test. From what I can summise (from what we saw at least) was you playing the 5 iron from nearer a 5 iron ball position (totally defeating what they are designed for). The sound of the strike did not sound pure IMO from what I could tell, this was even more frustrating as you didn't show the strike point on GC Quad. We are left not knowing what to really think.
    In my opinion these need taking out for a couple of course vlogs and playing as a true 7 iron ball positin despite what your head is telling you to do. This will give us a fairer view of them.
    So many reviews are heavily focused on length where I am sure if you did a survey across a hundred mixed ability golfers, they would say that left to right disparity is equally if not more important than distance. You said abou height being super high but the numbers show a 3 yard difference.
    I personally found the review quite biased based on your negativity mind set to the one length ( just my gut feeling). Still love your videos and will continue to watch but please try and include strike location details on each of the shots.
    On a different note, where on earth has Rob Potter gone and why is he not testing anymore, it was such an important part of the overall experience for multiple ability golfers.

      @@RickShielsPGA Iv'e tweaked with my set and have a pretty good system similar to this but better. The concept is like one length except you flight it in stages. The 6-7 irons are the same length or 37.5 because as you stated you get 92mph with a 7 so you can theoretically get the same shots with the 2 just different height and yardages plus you can swing easier when needed or simply just choke up a bit if you give your self some play with lie angle. I play flat 1 to 2 degrees so choking up allows me to float in the playable range and it's lie dependent so It just goes down from there. The 4-5 irons are the same at 38.5 then the 3 iron jumps up to 2 iron in length,but I rarely hit this. Most of my hybrids are 40/42 inches it varies because Iv'e found this to work well with a variety of clubs in a range. I have a 24 deg hybrid I play at 38 inches because it launches so high it's just personal preference with these types of clubs you have a lot of options. In the end spectrum I have found for my gap wedges a standard 8 iron length as perfect such as g-9-8 all the same! My 3 wood to float around 44 inches which is either the same as my driver,or 1 to 2 inches different which again is all very similar. The one length for all clubs is ludicrous,but staging your set in 2's from a progressive downward fashion to the same or very similar is a great way for consistency.

    Rick from the bottom of my heart The One Length iron is a good idea and not should be only looked at by the higher handicappers but also lower handicappers as well, it gives you a constant swing for your gap all the way to your 5 iron and I feel that is what a golfer needs instead of a different shot for a different club. But thats what I think. I have tried them out before and although they felt weird, you can't say their not but they work amazing and I am investing in the new cobra one length irons. However these are only my thoughts, tell me what you think.

But I have the Callaway Fusion Driver cause of its extreme forgivenes but I am starting to become better friends with the driver now and need some more distance which thus fusion driver is lacking cause of the forgivenes level.. So thinking about the soon to be replaced XR16 8 (with the new "Roque" line with jailbreak) or the G400 driver, or this new Roque.. The Epic it to tour player level for me.. not to forgiving on mishits with my slow swingspeed around the 88-94 mph driver swing speed. The G400 is the one I have tried the most because it just gives me super numbers! And got the new G400 fairway wood (4 wood 17,5 loft degree) in birthday/ I still love from the cancer present :-) In regular ofcause. I love it! :-)

      Hey bud, hope your trip was great. I play the F7s and love them. If you did go one length please give an update. If you went 1 length all the way through or combo? I would suggest all the way through and to get a club fitting, particularly for the lie angle of your irons, loft can also be adjusted to get the proper distance gapping which for any iron set is critical. Cheers and prayers for your health.

    I play single length irons and I don't seem to have the issue with a low ball flight on my five iron. My swing speed is at 96 for my irons on average and I have high soft landings. We all have different swings and different angles of attack. I am very shallow at impact and sweep the ball on every swing with crisp and shallow divots. I don't know why people trip on their ball flight so much. If you hit it crisp and it goes straight then you should have good results.

I’ll keep my Cobra OL for consistency and accuracy over distance. Cobra OL is probably still in more development to dial in what the public wants from their OL. And reviewer like you will accomplish that. Mainly develop and more consistency on the gapping department. To me 12-15 yards is perfect. Keep it coming and great reviews on OL.

    @BOATRIGHTGOLF Před 5 lety

    I don't know if I commented on this one before but I agree with what he is saying spot on! If his 7 iron goes 92 mph then id rather see what I call a dual flighted set for this idea. Doing this you have to get the lie angles right and start from the 8-9 then 6-7-4-5-2-3 etc.. This is pretty easy you match the set with different flexes you want as needed for launch and use length as a clubhead speed buffer. Nothing wrong with having a 9 iron the same length as the 8 because you swing them the same speed and simply use loft for distance and height. Same goes for a 6-7 you see Rick hit 30 deg 7 irons all the time as a review and he smokes it 190 carry or something then hit's the blade 35 deg loft 174 carry. Essentially they are the same clubs in length he swings them the same speed,but the loft changes the spin and carry. I guess you could make a set like this and progress, but a 5 iron the same length as a 7 clearly doesn't work great unless it's a windy day or something and as shown here you just lose to much speed. I couldn't imagine using a hybrid or 3 iron as 7 iron length makes no logical sense other than hitting it middle more often, but if you lose 4 clubs of speed then who cares when the shot comes out low and lacking speed. I had this in my old set and it makes your clubs 4 x better because if you error on maybe 1 deg of the flat side in lie angles then you can adapt anytime you want! Like if your 5 is the same length as a standard four iron but have 180 carry uphill and are in-between so you choke up and now have the reg 5 in play and can be a bonus there vs the next scenario of 200 downwind a bit and need more spin and loft so you take the longer 5 iron and hit it normal as a high floating shot. This is a cool concept because you get 2 clubs in one x 9. It's also very customizable I remember my old set the 4-5-6 being very close in length with the four and 5 identical the 6 maybe a hair longer than my 7 and had them pretty matched they way I liked it which was not the standard 1/2 inch differentials.

    I recently returned to the game of golf (R7's irons currently) after 8 years. And my weakness is grouping mid irons (4i to 6i mainly) when I'm practicing at the range. I currently replaced my 4i and 5i with XR hybrids which improved my accuracy just a tiny bit, but the distance is much improved. But, with the F8 one length 5i having a negative yards difference with (hopefully) improved accuracy like my 7 iron, these ONE length irons are tempting. I don't mind going GW GW with 250 for GIR on my second and third shot on a par 5.....better than 3w (super pull or slice to the trees) and 54*.....If the F8 5i is a few yards short, I'm okay with that..... thanks for this review Mr. Shiels!! gr8 work.

    I've been playing F8 One Length for a while. (Gap to 5 iron and 4 & 3 one length hybrid) For a weekend golfer, the benefit outweighs all the negatives. No, it's not perfect. Nor is it ever going to be. If this was the perfect solution, a lot more in PGA, LPGA would be playing one length. They don't because they have the skills that most of us don't have. It does take some time to get used to them. In the beginning, I thought I made a mistake buying these clubs. Now, I am a believer. And, of course, the trajectory will be an issue. Distance Gap also. I also believe one length irons need to be custom-fitted to your swing speed if you really want to get it right. Don't expect some miraculous result but if you are struggling to hit 4,5 irons solid as I do, I recommend you give it a try.

    After watching and reading reviews on the F8 One Lengths, and a deal popping up, I decided to go with a 5-PW, GW set, which replaced some old TM Rac irons (3-PW). My 4 iron Rac would carry around 205 yards with a stiff shaft. My 5 Iron One Length will carry around 210 to 215 yards, depending on the strike. I noticed on actual game play that the One Lengths are very forgiving, and usually resulted in a straight flight. I only ever struggle with the gap wedge due to its length, but when I get dialed in with it, I'm making good contact and carry with it. Also to note, with the Rac irons, I was having a 20-30 yard gap between clubs, which I struggled with if I had an in between distance; do I grab a 7 and hit it hard, or a 6 and hit it light? With the One Lengths, I have a tighter distance gap, so even if I pick the wrong club, I can get it very close. Would I buy these brand new? Depends. Used and on a good deal like I did? Absolutely!

    I play the F7 forged and they’re remarkable. Consistent 12-15 us gapping between ubs and my P and G wedges stop on a dime. When we have a random bloke join our typical 3some, they always ask what’s up with my clubs by the 4th or 5th hole; typical for them to take a couple swings by the turn and by the 18th they usually say they’ll be looking them. That being said, particularly with regard to your 5 iron distance with such a small sample size of shots, these need to be fitting for low and loft as any proper iron set should to achieve gapping distances. Also, when I first started playing these my distance seemed slightly longer in the short irons/wedges and played short on the longer irons 4&5 but after a short adjustment period following lie adjustment (toe down 2*) I’m now hitting a club longer on all of them compared to my previous set of variable length callaway irons (fit at same shop by same tech). So after the break in period I’ve had to add a 62* wedge and ditch my 4 hybrid for a 3 hybrid/rescue. Love my F7 one lengths

  • @e89jones
    @e89jones Před 6 lety

    I've played the F7 One since they came out... If you look at Rick's numbers .. 12.5 yard gaps from GW to 5i seems spot on overall ... problem is gap compression as you move from GW to 5i ... . gaps between 'shorter' irons are higher and they compress as you get to the longer irons. If you look at Rick's data - the gapping between the GW and 7 iron is 14.5 yards, and between 7i and 5i is 8.5 yards. That is exactly what i found all year playing the F7 One Length. I really love the One Lengths, but struggled with this inconsistency across the bag. 14.5 is just too big of a gap between the 'short' irons, and 8 yards is not enough on the long shots.. Last year I had to stop my F7 One's at 6 iron .. not sure why, but anything past than the 6 iron was prone to knuckleballs. Was hoping the F8 5i would have fixed the problem, but it still looks like it wants to hit line drives.

    In order for single length to work you need clubs that can be personalized over a number of different dimensions. There are limitations of the Cobras and Sterlings that are overcome by Edel. I picked up a set of Edel SLS irons and went in to be personally fit, club by club. At the start of the fitting the short irons came with 8gm 'screws' and the mids with '6'. The short irons had short iron Paderson shafts and the rest were mid iron shafts -- all customized for single length sets. My smash factor -- i kid you not -- was 1.13-1.2. And I am a low handicap former top flight amateur who still plays well at 70. My 5,6,7 and 8 irons went very nearly the same distances on average. An hour and a half later, the head weights had changed as follows. G, PW, 9 iron all 16gm added weight; 7i 14gm, 6i, 12gm, 5 iron 14gm. 5i swithced to Long iron shaft. Smash factor 1.43-1.45; distances more consistent and better than with my other set, TM790 also custom fit. Not yet exactly perfect as the 6i traveled about 160 carry and 5i not yet a full ten yds farther. Also, Edels lofts are not jacked, so the 7i is 34*loft unlike the 30* norm. So my 5i which was going about 167-168 carry is really a modern 6i. And I hit the forged Edel single length farther and better, but entirely a result of being able to be fit club to club. I then picked up Cobra F8, looked good, felt fine, but... in the longer irons, spin too low, trajectory too low. I don't have enough club head speed to make up for shorter length, but given Edels ability to modify shafts and head weights, my performance was better than on variable length. Conclusion: you can't judge Single Length as a group. The more personalized they can be, the more options they provide to compensate for differences in length. Makes sense. What i can say is that Edel single length -- and not an off the shelf version of any club including Edel__ provides a true test of what the concept promises. I am looking forward a summer of play to see if the performance in relatively competitive play holds up

    Thanks so much for the video, it's well done and shows what the differences are between one length and variable length clubs in the hands of someone who works in the industry. If we were all single digit or lower handicappers, or the .03 percentage of us that are pros, it would mean a lot. Perhaps if you conducted a test using multiple ranges of everyday golfers with varying handicaps that would have more value to the millions of us that aren't pros and make up 99.97% of the golfing public. As you're aware, consistency is the number one killer of golf games for amateurs, testing to see if these clubs make a difference in that critical part of OUR games is the real test of this concept. Any chance you could conduct that test???

    Two other feature of a one length set that are talked about here; you can take advantage of the shorter shaft and use the 5 iron as a fringe chipper or a bump and run club. Drop the gap wedge the set and fill the gap with ½ shots from the short irons. The lofts are high enough that the decent angle will still hold the green.

    Rick. A good honest review. However you can go up and down the grip on the Wedges, 9,8 and 7.Yo could have slightly longer 6 and 5 irons to get the height. I am interested in the concept of using the same swing for all shots in the same repeatable plane you will get consistency. The skill required is reduced and achievable by higher handicap payers. Experimenting with moving up and down the grip will give a comprehensive distance choice and flight choice. A friend of mine has 1 length Irons and hits them really high but very straight.

    Rick's point was this club is high-mid handicap people who struggle to long irons and wedge short that doesnt have spin control. This are not meant for 0-10 handicap ... where they are good at shaping the shots. I see he was little bias on 1-length but that was his opinion on how it wont work for lower handicap irons. So here is the solution for 4i,5i : get 2-3 cobra utility 1 length , 4-5 cobra 1-length utility 5i to wedge. now 5i is more like 6i distance. we have change our perspective to get optimum results. STOP COMPARING CLUBS TO EACH OTHER.. thats why we get fitted! Enjoy .. sorry for rant

    I bought the F9 5h-GW this yr, mostly just for fun. I'm a 5 handicap, and hit the GW about 125 and the 5h about 205. I think you really need to put these clubs in your bag for a few rounds to get a full sense of them. First you need to get used to hitting clubs that aren't the length you expect, which is strange at first. Also, there are intangibles that aren't captured by the raw numbers. Indeed I do feel like I hit them more consistently. I'm not sure how much of that is the one length, and how much is just forgiveness of the irons (my other irons are blades). But I do seem to have less trouble moving through the bag as I did before, since they're all the same length. Also, the fact that everything less than a 7i has more speed going through the ball makes it easier to hit balls out of the rough. (Wonder if this is part of the reason Bryson did so well at the open.) I hated the 5h initially; it felt so short, like a kid's club. But now it's my favourite club in my bag. To be able to hit a 205y shot consistently on line is a big win. I'm def not as consistent with my 4i blade. Downsides: I don't have a club for 210-220; I don't have a good club for punching low out of the trees; had to put a standard length GW in the bag for 115y. This is still an experiment for me and I'm not sure I'm going to keep these irons in the bag, but so far the pros outweigh the cons.

What isn't thought out very well is, the average or beginner golfer is going to get better and these clubs will keep you stuck in a rut and force a plateau on your scoring vs. getting better with a regular set of clubs with different lengths.

    Need to compare one off for next tests. 4 iron to 5 iron. 5 to 6. Etc. If you don't use a 4 iron, you should see improvements in your incremental ranges. 8 same length is equivalent to your standard 9 iron

    Normally enjoy Rick's reviews but this was garbage. It's so obvious when he's biased against something going into it. Seemed he was never going to like these from the start.
    Accuracy, dispersion, gapping, are all things that One Length aim to improve. None were covered.

    Rick, do you realize that you said you don't want to play "controlled golf"......
    Look, I get it......you don't like the ball flight. Can't blame you for that...
    However, for most of the general golfing public, controlled ball flight and straightened, forgiving shots are the most important aspect of potentially enjoying a round of golf.
    If these clubs deliver in that respect, then give them their due acknowledgment.....

    His issue with the 5 iron comes down to not playing it from the 7 iron position...I have a set of one length irons and absolutely love them....I play the ball in the middle of my stance and get great ball flight

    Rick, the president of Edel golf said that the secret of hitting one length iron properly is that you hit long iron fast and short iron slow. For example, 4i is 7i length, so accuracy became no issue. Smash it as fast as you can. On the contrary, hit lengthy-short iron as smoothly as possible to improve its accuracy and maintain a little lower flight. I hope this tip helps.

      That's pretty stupid...one of forced to have a quicker tempo with longer clubs than wish shorter clubs whereas in regular length sets you're taught to swing with the same tempo? Inaccurate shots are guaranteed.

      Rick among other traditional golfers try to hit all clubs with same club speed. Do you think Bryson hits all his irons with same speed? Watch his swing. Also, the following video has a good review on one length irons. It might help you understand better: m.czcams.com/video/FG62Qx5btDE/video.html

    Im 6'8", so the idea of one length appeals to me but I agree with Rick that it alters trajectory too much.
    What if there were a compromise - a set of Irons that only varied by 1/4" from club to club. You would still get a long PW and short 5 iron, but not as extreme as the one length

    Honestly as a individual that doesn’t play as often as many/most viewers of this channel. I think the one length would be great for someone like myself in the aspect of one ball placement, one swing. It allows less experienced players to learn the length of the club and get their swing consist for all irons.

    Why not compare the F8 one-length with the F7 one-length? That would be interesting to those who already like the one-length approach.

    Handicap- 10.6
    Rounds per Year- 40 to 50
    Location- Ky, USA
    I own the 1st Gen. One length irons. I have them in gw-6 iron in the players iron head and have my 4-5 iron in the more forgiving head. I absolutely love my iron gw - 6 iron but HATE HATE HATE my 4 and 5 iron. Im so inconsistent, like your saying cant get the ball height and lose distance in my spacing between clubs. I was very inconsistent with my old 4 and 5 iron and hoped the one length would help me with my long irons but they really havent at all.
    I didn't hit the ball very far with my old Nike Vapor Pro irons. Typically my 7 iron was 150 to 155 yards but with the one length my 7 iron travels 170 to 175 yards. So if your looking to ADD yards the one length is the way to go.
    My question is should I go trade my 4 and 5 iron in for a normal length club? That is what I have been considering Even more now that the 2nd gen, has the same problem. .
    Love your channel I've probably watched all your videos lol Keep up the great work!!!

    Due to shoulder issues and surgeries, I have transitioned to a single-plane swing which, as you know is where the one length craze seems to have it's biggest followers. But what about this idea?
    What if the 3, 4, and 5 irons were all 4-iron length; the 6, 7, and 8 irons were 7-iron length, and the 9, PW, and GW were all the same length as well (I think 9 and PW are already similar). This would allow you to hit each type of iron (long, mid, and short) the same way. I'd be interested is a set link this. Think there could be some merit. Thoughts?

    Hey Rick, I am hearing a lot of people talking about distance issues with 4/5 One Length irons. I have also heard from a lot of people that Cobra's new King Utility One Length is a great solution to those issues. I was wondering if you could do a review of the King Utility One Length and Standard Length irons? Please and thank you! Love your channel!

    Just started by picking up a SZ 5 iron at my 7i length 37 3/4”. When I hit my best shot with both on the range, total distance about the same (Garmin g80) but the traditional seems marginally higher . The difference however in on the course where I hit 4/5 shots into the green or fringe vs my normal 5i where I may have hit 2 well. I’m looking into the new wishon set as well.

    Nice review Rick. I like the idea of one length irons, consistent ball position, swing etc but it would all come down to gapping for me, at both ends. Would be nice to hear Pete's comments on that.
