  • Playing golf with One Length irons. Bryson Dechambeau is cleaning up on the PGA TOUR this season using his Cobra One Length Irons. Ive been sent a set of Cobra F8 One Length irons to test. Are they all that? are they a fade? What's it like playing with one length irons? in this video I take them out on the golf course and see exactly what its like. Lets find out... and lets it now!

More on course content with one length! There are plenty of videos with GCQuad already.
I’m a 22 handicapper and have used one length F7 for about a year. Swapped out 4 and 5 irons for F8 one length hybrids: so easy to hit! I also use one length sand and 60 degree wedges. My confidence and game have improved substantially , as well as my enjoyment of the game. I know they aren’t for everyone, but I sure like them! My favorite clubs are hybrids and gap wedge for some reason😎

I have used the Sterling wishing single lengths for about year now.
8 iron length, midsize grips and 1 degree flat. 5 to gap wedge
My handicap in the beginning was 29, I would struggle with consistently hitting the irons. It takes time for you to adjust mentally to the length of wedges and long irons - for me it took about - 5 rounds to trust the irons to perform the way they were design.
By the the end of the season my handicap drop to 22
I personally think the single lenghts works great for high handicap players. They allow the user to concentrate on performing the same action over and over. No changes to stance and just focus on the shot.
I recommend anyone interested in trying single lengths look at Pinhawks brand they are decently priced. After if you choose try Cobra single lengths.
Thanks for reviewing the cobra f8 irons SL
    Keep up the great videos.

100% agree with you. I picked up a 5-SW set of F7 Cobra SL irons. Now my handicap has dropped form 24 to 19, mainly through better iron shot dispersion getting me closer to the greens and often landing on the green. It is a great help in learning curve reduction for new golfers. one less thing to think about.

Hi James. I got my wife a set of fitted one-length irons and they’re working great for her. She doesn’t get to practice much and it’s easier for her to have one set-up for every club. It didn’t take her long to get used to the longer shafted short irons. Her set also includes a one-length 3 hybrid that really looks short but flies nicely! In my opinion, it’s a good option for the casual golfer that doesn’t have a lot of time to practice.

I use one length irons- 5 iron thru GW. I think there are some important considerations about one length irons.
    - I had to make two adjustments to my game.
Mentally I had to unlearn the setup rules I used for 20 years. Most of my shots are 7 iron ball position and 7 iron swing. If I hit my 5 iron like a progressive length 5 iron, the results are generally poor. I think for a higher handicap golfer like me if you don't commit to the one length one setup rule of thumb you may struggle.
I also found some differences in ball flight and gapping. For example, I found the gap between a 4 and 5 iron to be too close, so I still use my standard length 4 hybrid. My one length 5 iron flight is lower than I would like, but dispersion is so much better I will take that tradeoff. For me these are not problems, just considerations.
    - One length irons, like equipment in general, won't overcome swing faults. For me, I did improve my strike and dispersion enough that switching made sense for me. But they aren't for everyone, so...
    - If you think you might be interested in one length irons, you have to test them. I hit some on a launch monitor AND played 36 holes with a set before getting fitted. It took me 10 or 12 holes to really get used to them enough to give them a fair test on course, so playing 9 holes may not give you a true feel for how they will work for you. And, no matter how intriguing the concept, don't be afraid to admit they aren't for you if they aren't.
For me, I feel like having single length irons has help my consistency, especially with the 5 and 6 iron. My misses with those clubs are less bad, which in my opinion is about all you can expect from a fitting and your equipment. My handicap went down 2 shots this year, so they aren't a magic cure that will take you from a 20 to single figures, but they can help and for me they have made the game a bit simpler and more fun.

To be honest I dont have just a ton of time so they made the game more enjoyable and a little simpler. The F8 OL hybrid is also in the bag and that took even longer to get used to. I tend to sweep with my hybrids but the F8 OL had to be really hit down on to keep from topping it. Great vid and I would like to see some more.

I had the F7 One lengths and loved them. I bought the F8’s too and think they’re phenomenal. I have changed up the short irons though to progressive length clubs as I would get the odd 8 iron going 30 yards too far. So have 4,5,6,7 in one length and 8,9 & wedges normal length and forged as I wanted that feel/feedback. You just have to set up to them and trust they will work. Good clubs and they work

sharkhark that’s what I’ve done with my F7s. They’re my after work set. I’d say the F7 short irons are more consistent. The F8 long irons are more powerful by around 10 yards for me. The F8 feel nicer to me but only slightly and they do come with Arccos sensors built into the grip which is an awesome feature. I’d say if you like tech and have the budget then go for the F8 but if that doesn’t bother you and you’re on a budget you won’t go wrong with the F7s either. Probably wait until January when the F9s come out and the prices of the others will drop. I hate that people can’t tell us what manufactures are releasing new clubs. I understand that the products have an embargo on them but surely a little advice saying lookout guys. It’s rumoured taylormade and Callaway are releasing new metal woods in feb. And then March. And then April 😉😂

I own the F8 set including gap, sand and lob wedges. They are extremely easy to hit. The long irons have heavier heads and short/wedges lighter heads, providing help for gapping. Feel is the same for all clubs. I do struggle hitting knockdowns with the higher lofted clubs. But these are quality clubs making the game easier.
I am 70 years old. I don’t have back issues but do have arthritis in my hand so got the graphite in the set. One setup makes it easy to repeat the swing, for all the irons. Simplicity helps me reduce the number of swing thoughts/adjustments between higher and lower lofted clubs.

Been gaming the King Forged One Lengths (the players-iron version) for about a year now and my swing is just now getting adapted. I played a comp back in March and played AWFUL. There's a huge adjustment to be made for sure but after putting the time in to practice it's been worth it for me. With a progressive-length set, long irons were a crapshoot and switching has opened up my bag. As others have noted here, long irons can flight low but once you're used to the swing, moving ball position forward can remedy that. The short irons do fly high so windy conditions can be a problem but I'll take the gains in overall accuracy over a little higher flight than I want everyday.

    • @ohiomoto
      @ohiomoto Před 5 lety

I have the same set 4-GW with the SW and LW added to the set. I have two seasons on them and my experience is similar to yours. You have to hit the crap out of the 4 and 5 irons to get them up in the air but they are easy to hit and go straighter. On the short irons, I'm leaning to flight them down slightly rather than hitting everything full. It's a good thing because I used to be a flipper. At 6'3" tall, I actually like the extra length on the short irons. My distances are nearly spot on with what I hit with my regular irons and my short game has improved since I got these clubs as well. I'm finding it easier for me to learn with these clubs because I set up the same with all of them. I used a 22* hybrid this season in place of the 4 iron and will probably replace it and my 19* with One Length hybrids. That will make my 3w and driver the only odd clubs. I've only been playing golf for about 6 years (playing off 13), so I'm not trying to reprogram years of muscle memory.

Its 2023, and I currently play with 1-length irons. That first wedge shot you took (2:10) - too bad you didn't also use your regular wedge for that shot situation for comparison purposes. Would have LUV to see the resulting differences between a wedge you were used to, and the 1 length wedge. I am learning to use my Mazel 1-length set more effectively... but I am new to the game and also have a complete set of Lazrus hybrids just to try them out. A lot of fun doing so, and getting some valued insights with my experimentations. Thanks !!

I picked up a set of the Cobra F7 one length irons prior to the 2018 season. Bought them on ebay cheap. I love them. Took me about 4 weeks of play and practice to become comfortable with the clubs, I needed to find the right ball position. Now I'm a lot more accurate and confident with my irons, however i could not make the GW & SW work, so I play traditional wedges. I dropped my handicap by a stroke and a 1/2 and I believe there's better golf in front of me. I'm inspired to practice through the winter to continue my improvement. My one complaint is that the 5 iron and 6 iron come out flatter than my traditional clubs.

Just took delivery of a clearance priced set of F7 one length 4-GW. Hit them this morning indoors and can honestly say I have not middled that many iron shots in I don't know when. Oddly, thinned a couple 7i shots, but the GW went very high, the 4i was higher than I anticipated. Wanted to get on the launch monitor at my winter golf school, but it was offline. Should be able to do some gap testing this weekend. 5 swings per club to establish full swing yardages, and then come back with half swings to do 'range cards' to tape to the shafts. This will also let me know if any club bending for loft will be required in case I get some bunching up on distances.

The 8-GW fly higher and stop dead on full shots. I like to do Paul Runyon chip putt shots around the greens so having one length irons with different lengths are perfect as the feel is the same for every club they just run out shorter or longer as required.

Because you asked, I am playing single length Cobra irons 6 through Gap wedge and I have a 4 and five hybrid by Pinhawk. All clubs are 37.50 inches in length and all have a 62.5 degree lie angle. I use the 50 degree gap wedge for most of the tradition wedge shots around the green. My sand wedge is 36.5 inches but the lie angle is 62,5 like the other clubs. My sand wedge is a one trick pony, bunker shots. I had been using Single length long before the recent popularity and switched back to standard Pings. When Cobra came out with single length I decided to try them again. I will not go back to standards as at age 72, a repeatable swing is a good thing. I have played golf since age 12 and still carry a single digit index.

Just forget what’s in your head about traditional length irons. With bad back one swing to relearn is better than 7-8 different swing positions. Put ball in same place in swing for all clubs. Get out of your head. If you want to flight it down just put ball 4” off back heel it works.

When Rick Shield played the 5 iron he moved the ball to where he normally plays his 5 iron. My advice. Shut up, don’t think and just hit every club as though it’s a 7 iron. PERIOD. Also forgot to add. The long short irons fly alot higher. Helping with stopping on the green. I will say on windy days. It's a little harder, but in time I got used to it.

I have a set of the Forged Ones (4-SW)...shot my age with them; however, the 4 & 5 aren't forgiving with my clubhead speed...have replaced them (just the 4 and 5 irons) with hybrids. I find the longer "short" clubs easier to hit, especially the SW from the sand...no changes in distances vs conventional length for 6-SW.

I too am struggling with the idea of making PW, 9i, 8i shafts longer. How does that make them easier to hit and control? I guess we can all agree that a shorter shaft on 6i and above makes sense.
I wouldn’t mind seeing more content like this, awesome impressions of one-length irons.
Maybe next some launch monitor data, comparing current set with the Cobras?

I’m scheduling a club fitting session after I retire in July. I’ve been looking at the Cobra F9 one length or a set from One Iron Golf. The One Iron Golf set has a consistent loft difference between clubs. They have a uniform 4° loft change between each club.
So I will be having fun fitting a set of clubs this summer.

I just bought a set from 5-9, P, G, L. I have to say I only hit them twice, once at a range and once on my home course. I really like them, even though it is still a bit of an adjustment. When I hit a solid shot, it is phenomenal, but just like variable length, if I hit it fat or on the toe or heel, it responds the same way lol. But I would say its definitely worth looking into if you're looking at a new set and want the ability to stay consistent for your irons.

Overall a positive experience. There's not enough difference between the 7 and the 5 so I'm thinking about a 5 hybrid. Definitely a game improvement.

  • @per_growth
    @per_growth Před 3 lety

I've been using Sterling SL for about 2y and I have to say, they are fantastic. I play off a 5.2 index - but I still have issues with the 4i (I play everything at 8i length) - so i've substituted this with a hybrid instead.
Surprisingly, the biggest improvement came from my wedge play (Gap and PW) - one set up, one position really helped tighten up the dispersion of my wedges using SL. My SW and LW are standard ones as I don't really swing them 100%.
Word of warning though, if you don't have enough speed - the shorter shafts will be hard to get the ball airborne. That said, you can always swap it out with a hybrid (or just go VL with those irons).
After using both VL and SL, I don't think I will switch to VL again after getting used to my SL irons. The challenge now is to find more SL manufacturers (although Sterlings are great) that can come up with more choices for SL users (Wishon, Edel and Cobra are top of mind - but I wouldn't mind seeing more players out there giving us more options to choose from).
For those wanting to make the switch - I would suggest a proper GAP FITTING be carried out as you will be able to tweak the lofts for proper gapping and you will find out where your point of diminishing return will be (for me, it's the 4i as my SL 4i really just flies the same as my SL5i because I don't have the speed to make a 4i fly with the shorter shaft) - as reference, my 7i flies about 165yards.

I have gamed (still do) the F7 one length irons (4-PW) and they came like second nature to me from the start. The biggest thing is you really do have to get out of your own way inside your head. The idea is simple, same setup and same swing. Trust the tech to do the work for you. I am adding an F9 19 degree hybrid to the top end of the bag. I play normal wedges from 48 degrees to 60. Even though my irons are now two generations old, I have no need to upgrade because these work for me!

Easy to hit, but my delivery doesn't get them high enough, resulting in no real gapping past 7 iron.

I started with a Cobra F7 3-4 wood ( brilliant) , then added a Cobra F7 22-24 degree hybrid ( left out my 4,5 irons) . Now I have a Cobra F7 Hybrid 16-19 degree to replace my Callaway utility 3 iron. The hybrids are about 3 iron length and great for adjusting gapping and they fly into greens well; so easy to hit. For my second golf anniversary I picked up a used F8 driver ( so much better than the F7) and a used set of F7 one length irons ( 5 to SW) . I have a standard Cobra length SW 56 degree with versatile grind, which is probably more useful for chipping near the green than the one length.
I am looking forward to the reviews on the F9 clubs. Perhaps I will finally stop buying second hand clubs!

  • @kymstock1852

I use single length irons. I have used Cobra F7 and F9 and now Milford Golf SL-7 from Oz. If you a picker ( shallow or no divot) the Milfords are for you ( narrower sole) . If you are steep down into the ball the wider sole Cobras are better. Be aware that the lofts on the Cobras are very strong. Unless you have a swing speed with your irons in the low 80s mph, the 4, 5 and maybe the 6 iron ( 25 degrees loft or lower)may be difficult for you to get the ball consistently high enough to get good gapping between the clubs. You might be better served to use 19, 22, 25 degree hybrids or hybrid- irons. I am using a Cobra SL 19 as my 4 iron replacement and a 25 degree Hybrid instead of a 5 iron. My 6 iron is 29 degrees loft and I can hit that well (iron swing speed in mid 70s)
The one benefit I find is that I know if I get within 130 m of the pin I can hit any of my irons with confidence at the pin. I don't have a favourite distance / club I try to get as my approach distance.
It takes longer than a few hits to find out whether the SL iron concept works for you. These short tests on YT are pretty useless IMO. You can take a leap of faith and buy a set of Cobras, or try the cheaper brands at about 50% the cost. So far I am not finding any difference in the cheaper brand I am using. As long as I can get consistent distances I am happy.

Hey JR , love the content.
I do use one length irons. Sterling one lengths. 7-P + S + L. And cobra 19 and 22 one length hybrids.
Went from a 28 hcp to a 14 in 2 years. So I would say they have definitely improved my game.
I do use my wedges slightly differently tho. Instead of full , 3/4 and 1/2 swings to adjust yardage. I have a full swing yardage and a full grip down yardage. E.g. my gap wedge full is 115. But if I grip all the way down it’s a perfect 90 yards on the nose. Which makes my PW 125 and 100. Works like a charm. For me at least.
Should mention I cut my 3w to match my 5 wood at 42 “ and after adjusting lofts I now have woods that are the same length with perfect gaps for me.
Thanks for the great content. Hope to see some more one length vids. Sterlings maybe?

Good video! I have been using the one length irons (5i down to lob wedge) for a couple of seasons and have no reason to switch. I managed to drop my average score from 87 to 82. I can't say that's just due to the irons because I have also been improving my short game, but they certainly haven't hurt. The wedges have become my favorite part of the set. Most of the complaints about OL irons are the trajectory, and that's somewhat true, but I struggle to believe that most amateurs are being held back by trajectory. Accomplished golfers I can see, but not most of the average golfers I have seen over the years.

I am now gaming the F8 1 length irons from 5 - sw, along with an F9 4 hybrid. Never been more consistent with ball striking! One thing, and it's very important. Folks who try to switch from variable length or test these clubs keep trying to adjust ball position according to loft. With these 1 lengths, set up like your 7 iron and TRUST your swing. You'll love the results! Never going back to variable length.

I've been playing single length irons by 1 iron golf since 2012. As a retired military engineer I could never figure out why clubs were incremented. Loft is the key factor. The more you bend over the less power you can generate. 1/2 " on the hypotenuis makes little difference.

I had a quick go with the one lengths at a Cobra demo. The PW was the main one and it felt so strange, long and feelings were I would hit it a mile. I hit about 5 balls within about 5 metres of each other and used my own wedge to compare. The one lengths were more consistent and correct distance. Hard to get over the long shaft though. I guess if you grow up with clubs like that you wouldn't know the difference.

I am on with the F7 version, I have always fancied the concept of these, so took a leap of faith, I certainly haven't looked back or regretted doing so. I have had a year away from golf with injury/illness, and was looking to get back on the course full time, having previously been a steady consistent 6 handicapper, now playing off 9 (with the layoff) and struggling to play. I have every faith that by using these irons that my handicap will come back down, my unique bag/club selection means I only use the 7,8,9,PW of these, so find the transition and differences between irons, minimal. the only down side I find is a push to the right with the 9 & PW, I can only put that down to not swinging @ 100%, looking to draw the ball in, this is rectified with a committed 100% shot, so would advise not to play the 1/2-3/4 type shots with these,

I've had the F7 One lengths in the bag for 2 years. Good clubs and i totally understand the concept behind them. They are easier to hit then long irons but honestly - long irons fly to a little to low and shorter irons are a little to long and inconsistent. Its sometimes hard to hit my numbers. I recently got fitted for variable length (Mizuno 919 Hot Metal) but i kept the one length - just in case. Though i do have a feeling i won;t be going back to them. I think for mid to high handicap they are a good option if you don;t want to worry about ball position.

I have started using these clubs from the start of 2017 season. 3 Hybrid through to Gap wedge and my game has improved immensely my consistence, strike rate and distance has all improved all I need to sort now is my Driving and Putting. Do Cobra make one length putters and drivers ? lol. Anyway for me these clubs I cannot praise enough they have taken my game to a whole new level. That said they may not work for everybody I have not been playing golf that long and found it an easy transition but for somebody who has been playing for a number of years they may find the move to longer short irons a bit harder to get to grips with in the beggining but if you can just remember to hit them like your 7 iron i am sure you will soon fall in love with them as i have done.
