One of true great feel good songs of my youth. I still will always have a very special place in my heart for this cheerful upbeat song reflecting Southern California during simpler happier more innocent times. This wonderful will always be a gift to me that still play often with great affection and nostalgia. You will all be missed🙏
Yellow Balloon--- RIP, Don B. Not only a great bass player but a great guitarist (original instrument) as well. All around great guy, You will be missed.
I saw The Yellow Balloon in 1967 performing at a dance hall near my home town where many hit makers were booked into. It was a packed house, Don Grady was there and the band sounded very tight. The most popular song they did was a cover of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. They played it in both of the sets they did that night. A truly unexpected treat from a one hit wonder band. Anyone who had ever seen them live would have heard them do that number I'm sure.
what a sweet, upbeat, feel good, classic late 60's southern California sunshine pop song. I remember this song, was in 8th grade, It brings back all of the sweet memories. Seeing those kids dancing just captures those great times. Thanks!
@greatvanzinni I know, I talked to him several weeks ago to share with him how he was responsible for me becoming a better bass player. He and Alex, whom I'm still hanging with occasionally, lived in our apartment complex in North Hollywood on Kittredge street back in '68 '69. We talked for about an hour and he was very upbeat and a precious conversation. He didn't have to take me under his wing as I was only 13 years old , but I'm glad he did. He was a special person and he will be missed.
Although a few people have posted here that Don Grady is the drummer in this video, beginning at 2:50, Casey Kasem is calling the drummer Luke and mentions that he is bringing along a yellow balloon. So I was confused until further internet research revealed that Don Grady was also known as Luke R. Yoo. That confirmed to me that the drummer is Don Grady. .
Jimmy Piersall spotting at 3:17. Trust Piersall to know exactly where the camera is and to get in front of it. Other players I can identify (by their numbers): Bob Priddy (16), Fred Valentine (34), Joe Coleman (20) and Bob Chance (31), all of the Senators. I think the short guy in front of Piersall is Jim French, the Senators catcher, and the tall guy behind him looks like Phil Ortega, but I'm not sure of either. If the date of this game was May 6th, as stated below, Piersall had already played his last major league game, but I guess he was still on the roster.
Had to listen to this for it’s a sad day here in New Mexico cuz we lost five lives due to a balloon accident in Albuquerque yesterday I dedicate this song to you balloonists
I remember watching this episode of Shebang. I didn't know at the time that the drummer's hat and shades were meant as a disguise since that was Don Grady of "My Three Sons."
Brian Washington He’s not wearing a wig, that’s ridiculous. If this was recorded while “My Three Sons” was still in production it was probably during a period when the series was on hiatus and he let his hair grow longer. It doesn’t even look that long anyway and you can’t even tell much because he wore that hat to disguise himself.
I thought that was him on the drums. Yet they were calling him a different name so I wondered where is he? None of the other guys look like Don Grady at all. Thanks for clearing this up.
Thanks for posting this! To answer Douglas Bryan in the comments, Gary Zekley, an incredibly gifted songwriter and producer, provided the vocals for the record; when it became a hit, the record company brought in Don Grady, who in turn brought in several musician friends, to be the "band" you see here. I'd never seen a clip from "Shebang!" before--has a real "Where the Action Is" thing going--cool! Thanks again for sharing.
+dsfmn Actually, Gary Zekley isn't the singer here (he did however sing lead on 'How Can I Be Down' from the album - if you compare the vocals on both songs, you can tell it's a different singer). The actual lead vocalist here is Stan Farber, who also provided backing vocals along with Ron Hicklin, Al Capps and Bob Zwirn. They were four session singers who were brought in to sing on the record; according to Gary Zekley, they came up with the backing vocal parts themselves and, by complete coincidence, they were also the backing vocalists on Jan & Dean's version of the song.
Yes it's true the original guys were as mentioned above. However when the album was being cut the guys you see on the video above did all the vocals. As for the lead vocal on the song "Yellow Balloon", it was removed and Alex Valdez went in and sang the vocal you get on the album and CD. This was done at Armin Steiner's sound recorders studio early on, and he can corroborate it. I think only a few thousand singles were pressed of the original then. Any Yellow Balloon you hear now has Alex on it. The reason for the change out is because the record was starting to get big and the label didn't want anybody trying to lay any claims to royalties.
The drummer is definitely Don Grady...look at the face. He's hiding under the hat and glasses, but the voice and face shape, including chin cleft are identical.
It was a nice local music show (hosted by DJ Casey Kasem), they could've revived "Shebang!" in the late 1990s with KTLA entertainment reporter Sam Rubin as host and Tribune Entertainment handling the distribution rights.
THANKS FOR POSTING THESE. I'd heard about 'Shebang!" but never saw it. Where are more episodes? (BTW,the color on your ep is superior to another posting I'd seen.)
No that was Paul Canella (sp?) & Don Braucht on bass. Frosty Green on Keys Alex Valdez on vocals & Luke R. Yoo aka Don G. on drums. Don G. sadly passed away a year or so ago.
In those days sometimes the recording studio hired session players to make the disc. Then formed another band to do the promotion tours. Ohio Express, for example.

Don Grady wore the floppy hat and shades so no one would know it was him, but we knew better.
I love this group! I knew the guitar player, Paul Cannella.

This simple song is GENIUS. Contrains a couple of chord REgressions...I think....ALWAYS my fave rainy-day song!! RIP DON GRADY.
60s pop rock don't get much better than this!!!
Played at my sisters high school.
Alex Valdez is singing lead , Don Braucht is playing bass and Don Grady ( my three sons ) is playing drums
Paul Canela on lead. Frosty Green (e) on keys. Sadly Don B. passed a couple of weeks ago.

Says 1967..There was so much going on back then, but there was still a lot of wholesome innocence to go around. It was the year I was born btw.
Thee midnighters also perform

The Angels, Senators, and Yellow Balloon on one bill? YECCH!
Tenía 50 años no escucharla y me traslado aquellos tiempos.
Whenever there is rain....I put on this song...perfect for a rainy day...The album, hit song, and single ALL HAD THE SAME TITLE!
A youthful looking Casey Kasem introducing the band. Don must be the drummer.
Had to listen to this for it’s a sad day here in New Mexico cuz we lost five lives due to a balloon accident in Albuquerque yesterday I dedicate this song to you balloonists
I love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oldies are forever

STILL 1 of my fav songs from 1967
Funny watching the kids try to dance even though the record switches to a waltz in the middle
May 6, 1967...Final score: Senators 2, Angels 0.
Love it! Old Senators fan here 😁
Casey kasem 1932-2015
Anaheim stadium. My old stomping grounds! Jim Piersall was highly noticeable watching in this video.
The Angels look pretty thrilled with that song they sung to them.
They lost that night 2-0.
Anyone catch Don Grady (of "My Three Sons" fame) incognito on drums wearing a huge yellow had at sunglasses?
He's also wearing a wig to make him look more rock and roll.
Don Agrati : LOVE His "HIP" Look!!!!! (What would Steve & Uncle Charlie say (?!?!?!)
Brent Barker that’s a good one! Lol!
Brian Washington

Happy Birthday Don.

He tried to take a backseat so the band was more about the music. He sometimes used the name Luke R. Yoo for credit
@@RayNDeere That explains why Casey called "Luke" over with the huge balloon to help lead the acapella version...and it was Don!
Great Video! Thanks!
It was a nice local music show (hosted by DJ Casey Kasem), they could've revived "Shebang!" in the late 1990s with KTLA entertainment reporter Sam Rubin as host and Tribune Entertainment handling the distribution rights.
The intro just starting at the end of the video 3:45 is The Artistics : Hope We Have.
Haha, Grady!
Wow what great video quality..great job
Lived on the east coast. Never heard the song.
Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww goooooooood
Casey Kasem hosting prior to AT40 & "Shaggy"
What a name for a tv show Shebang ! Lmao 😂
They should have also performed this song on Hullaballoon, I mean Hullabaloo. :-)
THANKS FOR POSTING THESE. I'd heard about 'Shebang!" but never saw it.
Where are more episodes? (BTW,the color on your ep is superior to another posting I'd seen.)
Where is Don Grady in the video??
Why are time codes on the best videos?
The Washington Senators didn't look too thrilled here.,
Senators won 2-0.
How do they sound just like the record?
1:16 Hey, Hey, Hey!!!!!!!!!!
I always heard that Bill Reinhart of the Leaves left the band to form the Yellow Balloon. Anyone know if that is him playing guitar?
No that was Paul Canella (sp?) & Don Braucht on bass. Frosty Green on Keys Alex Valdez on vocals & Luke R. Yoo aka Don G. on drums. Don G. sadly passed away a year or so ago.
I had a double breasted jacket like that.
Aren't the musical performers miming? (a la Top of the Pops)
so this is what casey kasem was doing in '67?
That and also working on KRLA radio in Los Angeles.
lip sync ya think?
bill martin I know right!!! 🤪
I've seen Don Grady on TV hundreds of times, and none of these dudes are him. They must've just put his name on the label to sell records.
Classic Junk He is the drummer wearing the silly hat and glasses.
THE 12 HOUR MOVIE SPECIALIST Oh, the guy with the huge head and the short arms? Okay, yep, it checks out. Thanks.
It was because of his contract wit CBS, He went by Luke R. Yoo. He also has some solo stuff on CZcams under his own name
they gave up too easily. they should have hung in there kept trying.
those dudes could not sing that song accapella......i dont think they were the vocalists on the record...just lip synch the song....
