Lost LA TV Show "Groovy" with Michael Blodgett From 1967

- Here's a great, short set of clips from the late Michael Blodgett's early career -- with the special part being a few very rare snippets of Groovy from 1967, a lost Los Angeles teen TV show. Watch for a brief walk-on by The Merry-Go-Round with Emitt Rhodes at 1:10.
OMG!!! This is by far the most footage I have seen of "Groovy" in over 50 years! I attended numerous tapings in 1967 [at age 13], because my dad had a store on Third Street in Santa Monica, so it was a very short walk for me. My best memory is standing 10 feet from then-unknown Linda Ronstadt as she lip-synched "Different Drum" about a month before it hit.

Did you see Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett on there during November 1967? Do you recall what happened and how Syd acted if you did? Thanks
I used to dance on Groovy when Sam Riddle was the host, with Kam Nelson, wish they had some footage on those shows!!!
Oh boy, you and me both. There is little to nothing out there in terms of video. Unless someone gets into a TV station archive and lucks into it. Glad you saw the video...
Moved to Oregon in August of 1967. All I could think about was I was going to miss Groovy.
I don't think you missed too much of the show! It was barely on the air in its original format with Michael Blodgett. Would have loved to see whole episodes, though.
One of the greatest times and place to be, being there was the absolute best. I was there everyday, helped the crew laying the cables for snacks.I lived in the white apt. building beside the hill and parking lot on the 3rd floor with fire escape, mom's rent was $50 a mo. The soft ice cream, the board-walk bus- tram and rental inflatable 🏄♂️surfing rafts was 5 cents, ride the go-carts on the SM pier behind the merry-go-round was 50 cents, and Pacifc Ocean Park was one of a kind. Experienced so many 📺 tv shots, movie, filming music videos, L. Welk Show at P.O.P. and Jack Lalane at Mussel Beach same place as Groovy 93 khj radio
I talked my Dad into taking me to see Groovy. I was 8. The bands that day were Buffalo Springfield and the Electric Prunes. The psychedelic painted KHJ-TV production truck was really cool. Quentin Tarantino had it recreated for the premiere of Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood. RIP Michael Blodgett.

"Groovy" was strictly an LA show, and I had no idea who Michael Blodgett (1939-2007) is/was. The Minneapolis native initially became a tv actor as early as 1961, appearing in "McHales Navy," "The Munsters," "Bonanza," "Night Gallery," and "Barnaby Jones." By 1965 he took on film roles in "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls," and "Disco Fever." During the summer of 1967 he hosted "Groovy" that aired on KHJ-TV9 in LA.
When he retired from acting he turned to writing screenplays and novels. Michael also made some recordings for Capitol Records. He was married four times, with his most recent wife being actress Meredith Baxter (Birney). Michael died from a heart attack at age 68 in 2007..
Please release the entire series of "Groovy." Mike Blodgett was a talented host and the show featured most of the better music groups. As a historian of American television, I will write the liner notes.
My Dad, Yale Farar, was the producer of the Groovy Show. Needless to say, my sister and I were always on the show, and always picked from the audience! Ironically, 15 yrs later I was working at a Am-Pm and the owner was either dating or married to Michael Blodgett.

I remember living in Palm Springs and in the winter the show was at Tamarisk Park, and the summer was at Santa Monica beach, just south of the pier. I met Sky Saxon of the Seeds, Strawberry Alarm Clock and more. Awesome times for sure. I think my mother has photos of myself sitting in Michael Blodgetts lap. This was around 67' - 68'. Thanks for posting this! The Groovy Show kind of came and went. Great memories tho.

This is awesome, thanks for the upload. My dad worked at Al's Kitchen at this time (66 - 67) on the Pier and used to tell me about seeing the taping of this show. Now I can really envision it.

As far as local teen TV shows go, this was pretty good. I was fourteen and I remember it well. They had some great bands, including my first look at Canned Heat. I also remember how my father would always cruise in to the den to get a look at the bikini contest. Good times, thanks for posting!
Last band I saw on Groovy before moving to Oregon was Every Mother's Son. Always be a favorite.

@@Allen-jn4kx I do remember that, except that I don’t remember the performance as much as all the stupid psychedelic effects the studio was using in an attempt to be hip,lol.
The Pink Floyd segment was said to be taped days before the show on Sunday Nov 5th and it was shown on Thursday Nov 16th.
How do you remember it was Pink Floyd, guessing they must have been virtual unknowns at the time?
Can you describe what the psychedelic effects looked like cause I am wondering if it was the Pink Floyd's light show?
Any recollections about the interview or impressions about how the band acted? Pink Floyd was said to be having some problems during that period and they actually went home to the USA early.

@@Allen-jn4kx I don’t think my memory of this will be of use to you. I’m not even sure if it was the same show. I’ve only seen Pink Floyd on TV one time and it was a local TV lip syncing production in the 60’s.
Wow this is rare.
I was working at the snack bar at the Monica Apartments so it was easy to run down the beach for the taping. I remember walking down to the water with the group the Seeds and also laying down on my side in my bikini with one the letter R for groovy for the closing. I was 16.
I use to go down to the taping on the beach all the time. Had my leg in a cast that had Groovy written on it and cameras caught it. For months I was on a commercial for the show with focus on my cast

Goodness I’m old . I danced a couple times on Groovy. They picked me because I always wore a straw hat. Who was the guy who sang “Palisades Park”? I danced for that one . I also did a painting for a contest for Groovy- a psychedelic painting of Blodgett. I’m sure it ended up in his office . Wish I could have gotten it back. I drove to KHJ and asked for it after a winner was announced and was told they didn’t have it ....

I’ll bet channel 9, or whoever owns the station now, has tapes in their archives buried or mis or unlabled. It will just take someone actually nosing around in them and actually doing some detective work or checking stuff on an old video machine. This was around the time media corporations stopped destroying old shows because replay markets unexpectedly were turning up.
I certainly hope that is the case. However, many similar shows (e.g., Shindig) had their tapes reused by subsequent shows, and are now lost.

This was around the time that Pacific Ocean Park closed.
Pacific Ocean Park was closed because of a fire that occurred there. I remember going there when it was still open. It was a very nice place to go.
It was also the location where the final episode of "The Fugitive" was filmed. It broke some television ratings records, and was shown in the summer of 1967, when "Groovy" was seen everyday.
