Black side of town?
African?
Even my child had to laugh at this poor attempt to describe indigenous culture.
Smh I can't tell if this is a .gov sponsoring or the short bus channel.
Actually Latin America is very diverse, but the american mass media represent us as if everybody were the same.
I think the government has some responsibility for that as well. A couple of years ago in Costa Rica there was a HUGE media campaign that completely excluded the black... Caribbean side of the country. Same thing happened here in Ecuador. I believe the campaign here centered around futbol w/ no mention or show of Afro-Ecuadorians (outside of the champions). It has to be intentional and it will never be if we....(people of color) don't raise our voices in unison. I notice that the Afros here love this country and want to be included.
@@TheYarbros Yeah, because colonial times the african american and native american roots were depreciated, so the people that descend from europeans have more political and economical power. Before Evo Morales, the indigenous people in Bolovia were very marginated and treated almost as slaves.
@@TheYarbros The white latin american elites have a complex of inferiority, they want to be europeans, even so latin american is more complex than that. So they want to show these countries as mixed but standing out the european root. I expect that with the decline of european and anglosaxon countries and the arise of China and India this change, even so India is a very racist country too.
@@TheYarbros And that with victory of Lula, latin america can be united and defend their sovereignity against the global north.
It seems the media in latin America tends to act as if the African diaspora does not exist

Thanks did riding along!
I wouldn’t say African culture. Influences, yes, as much as Native American and European ones
There's a catholic church on the Southside of Chicago named St. Sabina, where they celebrate African culture. Depending on the celebration, the processional is very similar to this. It's amazing how our (black) history is so similar, just in different languages and cultures. They are a proud people. I wish we could've, would've kept our traditions alive. I could see in Apryl's face that she wanted to volunteer right then and there; she genuinely wanted to help. I've been watching CZcamsrs in Ecuador for at least two years now, and have never seen ANYTHING like this. Ecuador is about so much more than beaches, birds, fauna and food. Thank you for changing the narrative that we've been getting about Ecuador.
The ceremony was mesmerizing and deeply felt. We are such a spiritual ppl. Didn't understand the Spanish priest being there....it seemed a little odd to me but hey who am I. The pride, the cultural preservation and the ancestors emanating through their vibes, ours, cubanos, Caribbean.....all of the Afro cultures that we have had chance to engage with so many common factors. Loved it but hated the poverty of it all 🤨
I was thinking about St. Sabina too while watching and several other Black Catholic congregations in Chicago. I grew up with a set of identical twins who went on to become the first Black twins ordained in the Catholic church.
What traditions you wanted to keep alive? People create traditions. Old traditions dies, new ones are created as some evolve or die. Don't forget that Africans with African tradition captured and sold slaves to Europeans. So, if those traditions didn't help our people then, well we should let it go.
George Stallings is the founder of the Imani Temple African-American Catholic Congregation and was long active in the Black Catholic Movement. He served as a Catholic priest from 1974 to 1989, and was based in Washington, DC, for many years. He established the Imani Temple as an independent denomination in 1989, making a public break in 1990 with the Catholic Church on The Phil Donahue Show. The Archbishop of Washington excommunicated him that year.
If you want to see more go North to Esmeraldes near the Colombian border. My father retired in Manta and he is originally from Trinidad and Tobago.

OMG.....THISSSSSS......
Brought a tear to my eye. THIS is what we need to see more in these travel vlogs, more connections with locals. I've been fortunate to experience and see both sides.....from visiting my own family on my dad's side in Nigeria, and visiting these different countries with large diaspora populations. I love how those traditions have held together through slavery. It puts so much into perspective being a black person here in the US.
And another thing; black sho does NOT crack-everyone looks 10-20 years younger than what they stated in the interviews!

Yes, I didn't expect the indigenous community to be there...but I heard that we were symbiotic here. I ❤️❤️❤️ That part. Some kids were off to the side kind of rocking with the. and the congregation passionately applauded them as well...very moving gesture!

Thank you so much for this.
Great info gracias!
This video really warmed my heart. I teared up seeing the indigenous folk come into the church to pay their respect to our people. That showed true love and community. The camaraderie of you all within the community was special. This will remain one of my very favorite videos that you have done. Most of the African presentations, from the African continent to the conceptual West, are not driven by consciousness, by questioning values and standards, but appear to imitate Euro-Western standards of behaviour and acquisitive culture. It is a breath of fresh air to see this presentation with such affinity with and understanding of the subjects. We get their own perspectives of things. Great viewing. OMG! I'm so emotional. This video brought some tears to my eyes. Mi gente. Mis primos! Wherever we are on the globe, it's never too nice of a nice place, always some chaos, some darkness. They are the places they tell you not to go to and perhaps with some truth to it, but why? Hmmmmmm! When the indigenous people came in to make their offering, it was so heartfelt. I'm sure they might experience some obstacle as well. I love it. I might just have to put this on my calendar. I'd love to go and would love to meet Senora Gonzalez and Dona Carmen. Those are the kinds of folks who keep the culture flowing. Thanks for this video!
Dona Aida too. What I wouldn't give to just rub elbows with the cultural ambassadors!
Sir, you said it...The moral of the story is CHARACTER and its passing on to the children. Poignant. That's great legacy that is lost in some places for us. I know I'm so extra, but this type of thing means a lot to me. This is probably MY FAVORITE of all your videos! WEPA!!!!!

Just listen to the reverence & regard in the way Dona Solange’ family spoken. Her grandchildren’s word were dredged in respect! They addressed her as “La Senora Aida Solange.”
In our vernacular, they put some respect on her name! Not a single person was casual or informal in the entire episode.
Loved this video and everyone in it from the start!
Loved that and this part of the country is supposed to be laid back...all of our dealing were like that. Formal, sincere and beautiful.
I meant Aida Quintero but my point about the evident levels of respect stands. lol.
Thanks so much for sharing about this community plan on visiting Ecuador soon. I was planning to visit Esmeralda but it’s awesome to know the other area that is mostly Afro-based community!
Thanks for tuning in! We were always told about Esmeralda. We loved learning about Isla Trinitaria.
Oh yes! Those encocados are to die for! Sadly, here in Ecuador we have many Afro-Ecuadorians who consider themselves "white" and don't acknowledge their African roots, just like many mestizos distance themselves from their indigenous roots. It's sad because younger generations don't know their roots. It brought tears to my eyes to see the beautiful church celebration with self-determination. I hope you get to visit other Afro-Ecuadorian communities, such as those in the El Chota valley.
My sister-in-law's first cousin was the first Afro-Ecuadorian anchorwoman on Ecuadorian t.v.
Yes, we were had some conversations with some of the community organizers and it seems that therein lies the fight. Convincing people to identify as afro...if the true numbers were reported during the census resources could be allocated but that job is proving to be difficult.
It's complex here, as Rondell said. But I could definitely see the indigenous part of the Afro/Spanish mix in the faces of the people he talked to. Una mezcla buena.....
Beautiful, and muy interesante! Glad you found ‘your people’ of Guayaquil. Seems like a lovely connection. Muy divertido!
It was special to experience a part of the diaspora here. Thank you for tuning in!
Also, what a beautiful Mass! I am Catholic, and I love watching the African Masses in Nigeria online. Really special. Did you know that African Catholic communities have a special “papal permission” (or “dispensation”) to dance in the liturgy, as movement is such a part of their communication in worship. I love to watch, and pray with them online. A sad fact for the USA: after the civil War, during reconstruction, a bishop in the South was commissioned to help and catechize the black people, but he didn’t, because he was very racist. The Catholic Church in America might look very different today, if he had been faithful to his vows of obedience and God’s love. I never knew there were Afro-Ecuadorean Catholics! Que bonito!
@@TheYarbros One more thought- if you go to Peru, you may like to learn about St. Martin de Porres. He is an amazing Afro-Peruvian lay-Dominican saint of the late 16th, early 17th centuries, who is known for his incredible humility, kindness and spiritual gifts, like bi-location, similar to Padre Pio, and he fought with demons like him too. Many testimonies of him appearing to comfort and strengthen people held in slave ships, hundreds of miles off the coast of South America.

Wow! Wow! Simply Wow!!! Thank you for sharing this, I absolutely enjoyed it, the knowledge and history. And much intrigued by the community called "Nigeria" especially being a Nigerian. And the Church called "The Catholic Church of the Black Christ of Nigeria"
Thank you again, for this piece. I have learned something new. I'm not even going to go into the history of the Catholic Church, The Spaniards, and the enslavement of Africans and indigenous people of the Americas, during the Spanish rule across the Americas. I saw much of it on my trips to many parts of Mexico, how religion and the Church were used to manipulate people.
Thanks for watching and yeah, the church was definitely a huge part of the problem!
But doesn't mean they from Nigeria they are from different countries in Africa .
Loving this video, to see the people so happy and conscious of who they are. Their plight the same in most parts of the world, but their spirit cannot be subdued nor taken away from them. Good work.

I love it! It's always nice to see black people celebrating African heritage. We lack that in the US. We might be monetarily more wealthy, but culturally we are much poorer. The more money we have have or the more education we have, the more we want to live and be around Europeans or people of European decent. There is almost no celebration of African culture in the US. I kind of feel jealous, but not in a unhealthy way. I bet non of them are claiming to be Hebrew.
Thanks for video. I really enjoyed it.
It was nice to be around ppl seeking to maintain their roots!
Black Americans claim to be Hebrew and indigenous Indian, most of them will claim to be anything rather then African.

Great channel Yarbros and great episode ! Only want to explain that in Ecuador a huge and free black community, developed in Esmeraldas in the 16 th and 17th century, a northern coastal province, after two shipwrecks occured near the coast and the afro people from the ships fleed by the dozens and formed our black province of Esmeraldas. Other black people from Colombia joined in this área and mixed with indigenous people. They were let by the spaniards, to own all that land and for centuries they were the lords of all this province and even TIL today. So, It is not completely true to say that black people of Ecuador dont have their own land. They do own a vast land in Esmeraldas and that has been allways respected, but their extreme independence from spanish colonial influence lead to a lack of formal education and that has been their main limitation, my point of view. Also in Guayaquil black people were part of the first inhabitants and they took charge of the ship construcción industry that developed in the city. Please read obout Alonso de Illescas, a black Hero of Ecuador. 1528-Provincia de Esmeraldas, c. 1600) was a free african founder and leader of the "cacicazgo Reino de los Zambos de Esmeraldas" and recognized héroe nacional ecuatoriano y considered as the máximum héroe of the afroecuadorian freedom.
Yes, they definitely have their own land in Esmeraldas. I believe what Tony was referencing were the hundreds of thousands of slaves who were freed and simply had nothing. No compensation, no land, no place that they knew of to go. Interestingly enough most of the black ppl we spoke to in Guayaquil came from or parents came from Esmeraldas.
So moving history. Especially to me as an African person. I feel so proud of the the way our brothers in America could successfully resist to mistreatment and win 🏆.
What a beautiful tradition. I need to visit and take my kids . There grandparents are from Guayaquil. It's so beautiful! God bless the ancestors .

Interesting story. I have a rather negative experience with Ecuador and the continental African community. I supported the aide and rescue of about 14 continental Africans from various African countries that were sort out and brought to Ecuador through an Ecuadorian government sponsored program to teach in their school system. There were a total of 200 Africans brought in for the program about 5 years ago and after 1 year, all individuals in the program were thrown out into the streets of Ecuador with no money and no work permits. One Ghana who I personally knew there contacted me about what happened and I put together a process to help as many as I could. So the 14 I assisted are now here with me in the US on the road to citizenship. So, it’s interesting to know we have Africans there as my recusees didn’t know nor had the support while they were beat up and sleeping on the streets with no help from the government nor locals.
That's kinda what the doc was about. The people ofAfrican descent have had to fend for themselves for a very, very long time and that is how that side of town emerged.
First off, I appreciate everything that you (the Yarbros) do for every community you visit. I'm learning so much about the African diospora around the world by viewing your amazing channels. I'd love to support you and this channel so please let me know how I can do that as a patreon. I just watched your series on Salvador Brazil and I will continue to watch.

I'm coming back to Ecuador 🇪🇨 and would love to see the Afro-Ecuatoriano people (I can speak Spanish too although not 100 percent fluent yet). Is there any way I can connect with this man and Carmen who can give me a historical tour? I love history and Ecuador fascinates me. I also want to explore Esmeraldas and Playa de Oro. And could you tell me if there's volunteering opportunities in the Afro communities there?

MAGNIFIQUE! YOUR ORIGINAL DOCU ON AFRICAN DESCEND IN ECUADOR IS JUST AMAZING. Tha,ks Family for this AFRICANFULL JOB. African from Paris
Thanks fam...in Brazil now researching more of the family tree...
Brother, it’s great to hear you navigate through the Spanish language!
Gracias! lol
Thanks for showing us another area of the black/African diaspora! It is fascinating to learn about our differences and similarities. Did you film a similar video in Mexico?
No, we went to film it and went to the wrong area.....we gonna do double back just to do that video though....
@@TheYarbros Okay! Cool! Thanks for filming your journey!
This was so beautiful. Thank you for bringing this part of life to us.
You mentioned not being a part of Afro-Catholic traditions before. We outchea 😊. I grew up in a Black Catholic Church in Houston and recognized a lot of that ceremony- though the indigenous offering was new and brought me to tears, it was so beautiful. East Texas and Louisiana have decent sized Black Catholic congregations. When I last attended (like the late 90s) there were strong African themed services around Easter, Juneteenth, and during Kwanzaa at a minimum.
Thank you again for sharing these stories and the history. That switch tho!!!! 😂
Thank you for sharing....I never new about that Black representation in the states. Thanks for enjoying the ride along!
Thank you for sharing this vid & information. This is groundbreaking stuff for me. Much appreciated fam!
Love this....thanks for watching!
This was a great video! I am so happy to see this area of GYE. Sorry I am sorry I didn't get the chance to visit this neighborhood. Thanks so much.
It was a beautiful thing. Thanks for watching!
Feeling so good to see our kindred doing great in Ecuador
There is a great community there....they are still struggling though. The struggle is real everywhere for us!
Real history that has to be taught to our kids. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
Great video. I have a fascination with the black diaspora community. I'm here because I just watched Ecuador beat Qatar in football. Almost all the Ecuador players were black. Myself, I'm of black Jamaican heritage - both sides, UK born and raised, now living in the Netherlands.
We are serious about spending some time in the Netherlands! Almost the entirety of their futbol team is black....but of course the struggle of the Diaspora is here as well....lots of back story there but the Afro- Ecuadorian is alive and kicking here! lol
I really appreciated this post, beautifully done 🤎
Thank you! Really glad you enjoyed it!
This video is worth a subscription & thank you for showing us some of our black Africans & their needs in Ecuador.
Humm🤔
The whip Mother Aida brought out is what we call 'koboko' in Nigeria. I t kept us on the straight and narrow. You never want to receive it twice !🤣🤣
😬😬😬
La gente afroecuatoriana, son personas muy alegres y amables, saliéndonos del contexto desearía saber que edad tienen, porque se los ve super jóvenes.🥰❤
Negros !!
We loved the culture and vibe as well...and we felt like family!
Wow! This was a a wonderful video and very informative! Now, I need to make another trip to Ecuador and locate my people. I was there about 4 years ago and loved it however, I didn't know anything about the Afro-Ecuadorians. I only spent a minimal amount of time in Guayaquil (Flying in and out of Ecuador). I spend most of my time in Cuenca.
It's a wonderful place ....the right time of year and it's one of The Spots for plugging into the Diaspora!
Phenomenal work 👏🏾 Much love from 🇨🇦
Thanks Canada!
Thank you! For this wounderful and very important information 💕
Thank you for watching!
Thanks yarbros for sharing this very interesting and informative video.
Our joy and pleasure. Thanks for supporting it!
Best video of Ecuador by far. I love seeing my people all over the Globe.
Funny, in Costa Rica they warned you, Ecuador they warned you and both places had the most beautiful people and best food. How do you learn to volunteer. Thank you for sharing.
Yeah, this neighbor was definitely dangerous though but it was also filled w/ love...and good food lol
Me encanto este video! Thanks for showing us this area a of the city.
De nada! Thanks for exploring & learning w/ us!
When ever I see my African friends far from Africa in another land I appreciate God. We are all African from Africa the mother land. They dress just like us, look like us and they still remember their African heritage. ❤
Yes, it's remarkable and beautiful...and it's consistent. Everywhere we go there are a lot of very similar traits that I see in the afro-cultures. Almost like we took Africa with us and planted it everywhere.
Wow. How wonderful to see this (although for some reason it was blurry and I couldn't read the text). I had no idea that there was a large Afro Ecuadorian community in Gye. I appreciate you exploring and revealing so much to us. I wish it had been a little more crisp to see those beautiful colors. I was enthralled by the church service. Very African. And wish I could have had some of that coco pollo. Looked delish. And your guide was very informative and kind. What a blessing! Muchas gracias. 🌺
De nada Thanks for tuning in! Regarding the resolution quality in the video...hit that sprocket in the lower right of your YT screen go to "Quality" and select the highest one your computer can handle and your picture quality should be nice. We do all of our videos in 4k so they should not be blurry. Thanks for tuning in!
@@TheYarbros Okay, will try that. Usually it is crystal clear. YT. *smh*
The Yarbros, the Best thanks Brothers
Our pleasure!
I love this video can you use black letters for the subtitles next time 🙏🏾

Thank you and welcome to the fam!👋🏾👋🏾
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for this video. I really appreciate this one. I am beyond words. We never see this and my kids and grandkids never knew this existed. Continued Love and blessings to you both. Love Love Love your videos. That switch had me flash-backing LOL
Thank you! That switch had me flashing back too 🤣🤣🥴
That switch definitely gave me flashbacks! And my paternal grandmother would make you choose the switch from the tree. Choose wrong and it was even worse.
@@carlabanks4023 We had the same grandma 😄😄😭
