  • 2020 marks the 40th Anniversary of the Largs Viking Festival, which was founded in 1980 to celebrate the famous Battle of Largs in 1263 in which the Scots repelled an invading force of 160 Viking ships with an estimated 15,000 warriors on board.
This annual nine day Festival usually runs from the last weekend in August to the first weekend in September. Among the attractions are a Viking Village, a re-enactment of the Battle of 1263, and the burning of a longboat. There are lots of other entertainments too.
The 2020 Festival, like so many events, had to be cancelled, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But we are much looking forward to welcoming everyone back to Largs at the next Festival, in 2021 or 2022.
The Festival not only reminds us of a famous Scottish victory, but celebrates the significant influence the Vikings have had on Scottish life, history and culture.
This film, made by James Willetts and narrated by Lesley McCormack, gives an account of the Battle of Largs in 1263 and tells the story of the the popular Festival itself, from 1980 to the present, an event which attracts many thousands of visitors every year.
