- “Up Helly Aa” - the Shetland Islands’ Viking festival is the world’s largest fire festival. Once a year in the UK's northern-most archipelago, about a thousand men dress up as Vikings to roam through the town of Lerwick. The tradition dates from the 9th century, when the islands were conquered by the Vikings of old. Alongside their celebrated connection to their Scandinavian roots, the Shetland Islands are renowned for their robust ponies and beautiful, rugged landscapes.

@@dweuromaxx Yes, we have a fire festival called Bealtaine each year at the beginning of May. It is celebrated upon an ancient hill called Uisneach. The festival had been celebrated for over 5000 years and 10 years ago the festival was reborn. It was the job of the High King to light the fire and recently the President of Ireland did the honours to light the fire. Once the Uisneach fire is lit, it signals other fires on the horizon to light also and these fires light right across the country like a domino effect after sunset

I love the Viking festival, the work that goes into it, the costumes, building the ship etc, it's a credit to the people just amazing, BUT I wish they would not put wings on their helmets IT is not authentic, it is from some Opera play long ago, no viking wore wings.

Ironic that the festival was originally sponsored by the local Total Abstinence Society in the 1870's to divert the island's young men from drunken rowdiness.

It's the Shetland Islands - it isn't Notting Hill.
Why aren't woman allowed to be included... Nordic folks who wished to be a Viking and reach Vallhalla after life were treated equally, sailing and pillaging like any man.
This year for the first time, women also marched :)

The original designs of viking helmets are spectacular enough without this Victorian tacky fantasy version.
