Making the Case - 1989 Pistons

- There are eight teams since 1970 that I think you can make the argument for as being the greatest NBA team of all time. The 1988-1989 Detroit Pistons are one of them.

When it comes to greatest nicknames ever, Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson has to rank up there, that alone puts this team up there.
Absolutely! For context, William "The Refrigerator" Perry had become a media phenomenon with the Chicago Bears shortly before.
World b. Free
AK47 is a good one
@@skinneybob4984 Andrei Kirilenko was fun as hell to watch as well.
@@oliverdennis3115 FAX’S that’s why he got a fire nickname
Knew this was gonna be a classic when Tony Montana kicked things off
Took my exact comment. I knew this video was gonna be 🔥.
HHa yup
And then it segways into Bad Boys. Awesome.
Dennis Rodman was a very important part of two of the greatest teams ever
Same with Kareem
As well as ron harper and steve kerr
That is why he's in the Hall of Fame
Horry was vital to 3 teams. Not to the extent of the other 2 stars but still vital.
Plus San Antonio who weren’t so bad
Impeccable approach, humanizing this team. Their achievements have been contested and belittled more than any team I can think of (or at least prior to 2017). People look at teams like the 2014 Spurs and talk about how it's the most "beautiful" basketball they've ever seen. While I largely share that sentiment, here is a team with the same amount of depth, who played equally exhilarating, cohesive and selfless. The difference of course, being that with the Bad Boys' beauty comes a dash of their brand of ugliness that makes them so singular and compelling.
The spurs were the clean version of the pistons lol
The pistons played the way baskeball was played in those days physical
Scottie Pippen was doing bad Boys stuff watch him vs Knicks
I agree 100% !
Mainly because Jordan swept them the fuck up out of there the moment he had semi decent help. It was a good team but nowhere near top 10 all-time.
Beat MJ, Bird, and Magic all in one postseason. Respect.
bird did not play in 89
@@robfalter2522 He didn't that's true. They did beat the Celtics though. They did end the Celtics dynasty the previous year though. Bird played then.
@@ILoveOldTWC you mean 1988? Bird missed the whole season due to surgery
Detroit beat Bos in 1989, without Bird, but they also beat Boston in 1990 4-2 WITH BIRD in the lineup. But one question - how did Detroit, who were contenders from 1986-87 to 1989-90, how did Detroit, who beat Portland in the finals 4-1 the year before, GET SWEPT by Chicago just one season later in 1990-91, ?? Did they get THAT much older? Did they lose a key player? What dynamics were at play for DET to be a non-contender so quickly?
@@robfalter2522They would have beat their asses in 88' if the league hadn't cheated on them in the finals. 🏀
I was damn near in tears during that Isaiah sprained ankle segment. Absolutely incredible stuff
Clayton really knows how to get at the heart strings
I was. The fight Zeke displayed during that time is STILL LEGENDARY! We constantly hear what these guys in this weak ass era do and Zeke just put 25pts in a quarter on the Defending Champs..on ONE LEG!! One of the greatest displays of competitive fire in Sports History..😓❤️💪🏾
Yeah I fight back the tears myself
@@emery2310 dont diss something then praise the other
@@uneedrambo716 It disrespects itself. The business is undoubtedly at weak soft points, ironically, after Malice at the Palace, featuring the Pistons. Their style was always looked at negatively, from many who didn’t appreciate toughness.
Tim Duncan is the true Bad Boy for getting a foul by laughing while on the bench
Joe Crawford was a bastard of an official!
Their is a reason for that though, but not basketball wise,imo...🤣🤣
i do believe he got two technicals for laughing on the bench and was kicked out of the game,
Uhh laughing? Eww such a dirty move by Duncan. He deserves a tech for that 🙄
Nice boy Tim Duncan😮.!
It's kinda crazy the parallels between the bad boy Pistons and the Wallace Pistons. Trading for Acguire/Rasheed mid season, winning with defense and a balanced, unselfish offensive attack.
The best thing I can say about the 89 Pistons that hasn't been said to death: If you ignore the dirty play you have perhaps the smartest, most dedicated, and deepest team since the early 70s Knicks.
Facts. I think it's so insane how people ignore Bobby Knight as a coach. He was one of the smartest and easily one of the best coaches of all time. Not to mention the incredible depth of the 89 pistons that basically had 5 men on the court that could of started for any NBA team at all points in a match. The pistons are so slept on.
@@pittaaaabread Bobby Knight? I thought they were coached by Chuck Daly
@@gamemeister27 Yes! I was writing this in the morning on my drive and for some reason my brain just went to Bobby Knight cause I heard 1992 dream team. Thanks for correcting me.
They're looked at as the 90s Knicks team who just got lucky with a few wins
they were a bad call away from 3 titles in a row...then the rules changes
As a Detroit native, lifelong Pistons fan, and defender of the Bad Boys, it’s amazing to see this team get the respect it deserves. You couldn’t have done a better job capturing what made this team great: winning the mental game, putting “we” before “me,” and outworking everyone else in their way. Cheers to you, Mr. Crowley.
They don't deserve respect lmao. Dirty ass team. But since you're a pistons fan, you wouldn't get it.
@@Abbad1579 I would argue your bias clouds your judgment and that you also wouldn’t get it. Clayton did an excellent job of highlighting so much more than their “dirty play” but it seems you don’t care about any of that.
@@jacobcelmer4928 Nah they were very good. But also extremely dirty.
@@Abbad1579 they don’t deserve respect? So what about the 80’s Celtics and the 90’s Knicks? They were dirty as hell, Pippen
was more afraid of the Knicks than the Pistons! And you’re just going to overlook their extreme offensive talents?? That’s why they won two back to back chips!!!! 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
@@DJaySplitSecond The pistons were over the top dirty. But you detriot fans would never understand.

@@ClaytonCrowley good content man
Wait is this the German dude talking about the sensitive parts and insults that make no sense??
Great video but one huge omission is the role of Chuck Daly. I think his role in this team is historically underestimated. He was able to make it work, create the mindset and glue it all together. His ability to make all these characters align should not be understated and accumulated in him being the head coach of the dream team. Daly was such a class act that he never much claimed the championships as his but due to this his contribution is overlooked by the media.
Agree.
Zeke's game on his destroyed ankle is the single greatest performance I have ever seen in the Finals. He is a top 3 PG of all time.
He was the original "I'm on HALF A LEG and dey can't stop me!!!!
He wasn’t even a top three pg in the late 1980’s:
You had Magic, Stockton was starting his run. So is Thomas a distant third in 1988 or 1989?
Nope. Not at pg.
3rd has to be … Fat Lever. 6’3” triple double machine.
A true pg, lever often led his team in rebounds. Lever had averages of c. 20ppg, 8 rpg, 8 apg, 2.5 spg
Zeke is definitely top 5 pt guard of all time
Stockton was a great player, but he can't hold Zeke's jock. Ask Magic about it. He's said as much. Isiah was like Bird, Magic, and Curry where you wanted him taking the final shot. That isn't Stockton's game which was basically feeding Malone on the pick and roll and some outside shooting. Isiah could go inside, outside, clutch, and could dish. And much MUCH better handles than Stockton@@Apple2-ux8uo
@@Apple2-ux8uoone of the dumbest comments ever.
Isiah Thomas in those years whipped all 3 of their asses head to head .
Stop using stats because Isiah shoved them up their a .es!
This video was insanely persuasive. Pistons are now my GOAT team lol
people love to mention the bulls but the pistons from 87-90 were basically in the finals 4 years in a row..i feel in 91 they just ran out of gas...in 87 they made game 7 of the east finals
@@razkable Correct. 1991, they were out of energy and the Bulls were hungry and fired up and wanted nothing more than for their road to an nba title to go through the Detroit Pistons.
They are up there.
Thanks for emphasizing how Joe Dumars transcended the "Bad Boy" image, even though he fit right in with this powerhouse team. I'll never forget how excited my friends and I would get when Vinnie Johnson got hot late in a game. Nobody had the answer to peak Vinnie!
89 lakers had byron scott but he got hurt
@@razkable About time someone said it... FACTS!
Vinnie would start on at least half the teams in the league. And coming off the bench? Wow!
Vinnie was only player in the NBA who could shoot a line drive jump shot and somehow get all net. When he was hot, he could hit from anywhere without even having a clean look at the rim.
My favorite Piston is Dennis Rodman. And what really impresses me is their defense keeping the opponents scoring under 80 points. The Bad Boys dominated the league. They're the Mike Tyson of the NBA.
Anyone else cry near the end of every Making The Case episode?
Yes...Especially the 2001 Lakers one...😭😭😭 RIP Kobe
This one especially with that soundtrack...you almost feel bad for them losing the 1988 Finals, when you never thought you'd feel bad for the Bad Boys ever...
@@fireshadowblade9 true
The Lebron episode gets me every single time
I'd like ur comment but it has 69 likes cant mess that up homie
This right here is one of the best videos I've ever seen in my life. What an astonishing case for that team. Well done classy crowley, you've done it again
i feel the 89 lakers take them 7 if healthy...they rolled the west playoffs...11-0
@@razkable I agree the Pistons don't sweep if the Lakers are healthy, but lose the series? Pistons rolled everyone from the halfway point of the season forward, 37-6 to close out the regular season, then 11-2 in the east playoffs. The only playoff losses and their single home loss for the entirety of the back half of the season were at the hands of Jordan, who the Lakers didn't have the pleasure of facing in their 11-0 run through the West.
Don't get me wrong, a healthy Magic at the conclusion of an MVP season is a huge change for the Lakers, but Detroit was on fire, and nigh-unbeatable at home. I really like their chances with home court advantage.
Heck, the '88 Pistons took a healthy Lakers squad to 7, and it took Isiah spraining his ankle, a phantom foul, and Lakers fans rushing the court in Detroit's last possession for LA to grab a pair of one-possession home wins.
@@Rodanguirus Exactly my man Detroit wasn't losing in 89 an shouldn't of lost in 88!! You know ur 🏀 Basketball No Disrepect to the Showtime lakers 1980-87 I'll take the D 87-90!!!
I'm old enough that I saw the ankle game on TV live. It stands out as much as the Jordan flu game and the Nash broken nose/swollen shut eye game. I wasn't a Bad Boys fan going into that game, but I surely was thinking about it after. Surprised to see this team on your list when I started the vid, but not when it ended. Keep rockin', dude. These are great
No other team can say they beat Bird, Magic and Jordan in one year, They have a case for the BOAT
Holy shit, best instead of greatest makes for such a great acronym. BOAT comment, my friend.
Not my invention, But I prefer it
89 lakers had no byron scott kareem was ancient and magic got hurt worthy was not 100% but ok
They cheated the pistons in 88, West was trash and Magic popped his hamstring trying to run with a real squad
@@magneticqubzian6902 I agree. Best the best and greatest aren't the same thing. I would call Muhammad Ali the greatest Boxer for all of the things he did outside the ring and the charisma. But I wouldn't call him the best because modern heavyweights are huge
i'm always consistently blown away by the writing behind these videos... that line in particular: "the best heroes are the ones that have to overcome their flaws and the best villains are usually the ones that have something humanizing about them." Just an absolute gem of a transition into the segment on isiah during the 88 finals. like i just always find myself in complete awe at the skillful story telling behind these making the case videos.
Not knowing a ton about basketball before the 2000s and not knowing too much about the Bad Boy Pistons except that everyone hated them, the ending with Thomas putting up 25 and still losing really got me and made me rethink my perspective. Yet another masterpiece of a video, bravo
Everytime I see one of your videos, only one word comes to the mind: feast. They are a visual and auditory masterpiece and it's evident that you put all your heart into each and every one of them.
Keep rocking dude
That team was straight fire🔥🔥🔥🔥 Thomas was always there to set up the plays and a good scorer, Dumars was a good 2-guard and guarded Jordan well. Mark Aguirre a good scorer for the team but sort of a shell of himself from the Mavericks. Then there's the real bad boys like Rick Mahorn, Bill Laimbeer who had a good jumper, good pick and roll player, a good rebounding machine, and is the dirtiest player of all time. Then Dennis Rodman, the rebounding machine for the team. That 1989 championship run was so legendary. Lol but they were no joke, those were the real bad boys.

What? His upload schedule is decent as hell.
Got into basketball later in life. Maybe 15-16yrs old. Watched the ESPN doc on the Bad Boys. Pistons fan ever since. That’s what it means to be a team. There are many a championship won by a guy or a pair, but this stands at the peak of what it means to play as a whole.
Tears in my eyes. An absolutely masterful tribute. This team is the reason why I love basketball. I was blessed to be born in time to watch the championship runs and I've stuck with the Pistons ever since, through the good times and the bad. We're about to make some noise again. Screw the record. I only missed six games this season.
Cade cunningham is legit
Me Too Without This Team Basketball 🏀 Will Never Be There It's At Because Jordan Had To Learn How To Beat This Special Team That Had His Number For 3 Or 4 Years Straight.
So happy this team was considered. One of my favorite players ever is Zeke, and mostly due to this team.
I really hope the 83 76ers make the list. Would love a video about them!
That team along with the '67 Sixers were considered best ever...but because '83 Sixers won in the middle of the LA-Boston era...thing was they had battles with those teams in late '70s early '80s and finally overcame with Moses Malone and DrJ
@@JerseyFan Don’t forger Mo Cheeks
Rrrrgggg this is gonna be a tough one for me because I grew up in Chicago, and I hated this team. But...good is good. And your videos are always excellent. I’ll watch a little later today. As always, thanks for making great content!
I wish I could like this 100 times. Joey D, Zeke, Mahorn and Big Bill!!!! Aww the memories
Just imagine this team vs the ‘04 Pistons in a 7 game series.
I can’t. They would literally KILL EACH OTHER on the court..
60ppg for both teams lol
Laimbeer would immediately get Wallace ejected.
The 04 Pistons were incredibly deep, balanced, smart, and cohesive as well. I think the Bad boys were more talented overall but they never faced a defense like the 04 Pistons either
That 04 team was different. They didn't start the playoffs looking like champions, but they came out the ECF cooked to perfection. The Bad Boys had to build and fight for years. Bad Boys win off character from climbing a tougher mountain.
This is the truest video describing that era of the NBA that I have ever seen. Totally accurate. I feel inspired to go out and buy a bill laimbeer pistons jersey and wear it frequently at our local outdoor basketball courts

Amazing video, Clayton! Can't wait to see your other seven "cases."
I watched every Piston game in the Isiah Thomas era. Truly underrated. He would distribute the ball first three quarters have maybe 10 or 12 points. Then take over the game in the fourth quarter. Usually with a dazzling display of shooting and passing. I played against him in a few pick up games while attending Oakland University (Pistons had there practices their and players would come a few weeks early and play with us college players). His athleticism was mind blowing. I watched him right in front of me from a standstill position jump up and do a 360 degree dunk. Pound for pound the best basketball player ever!

Dude, I shedded a tear watching this. I grew up watching this team fight for EVERYTHING they got. From the coaching, versatility, talent, teamwork, defense and mental toughness, this team is definitely one of the greatest TEAMS(2014 Spurs and 2004 Pistons are in this category) in NBA History.

It's crazy the number of highlights show Isiah hanging onto his dribble despite actually falling down. That's uncanny. I've seen players do it here or there, but Isiah's just consistent with it. I think Isiah might be the best dribbler of all time.
He said he learned from Curley Neal a former Harlem Globetrotter the art of fingertip dribbling.

My favorite team ever. Toughness, dedication, hustle, teamwork, talent. I fell in love with them, and no team made me feel the same ever since. When the 2004 Pistons came, they reawakened those feelings in me, and I was grateful for that, but it wasn't quite the same. I'm not from Detroit - I live on the other side of the world - but this is how basketball should be played.

Another fantastic Making The Case. While I was watching this I started to remember what a strong spirit of TEAM success they had. I hated them, but that 89 team was a once-in-a-lifetime.
Thanks so much for all the work you obviously put into these presentations.
Isiah was insanely good. Third best player of the 80's, behind Bird & Magic. And Rodman became one of the most valuable players of the 90's, and could dominate a game without scoring. Completely unique player
That is what I think some people miss. The NBA was Bird and Magic, then Isiah forced his way on stage. He was right there with them. Knocked both Bird and Magic off at their peaks. And when you played Isiah he was every bit as worth a rival as Bird was to Magic or Magic was to Bird. Even when he lost to Bird or Magic the series were epic and all time. His unfortunate backing up of Rodman's dumb comment tarnished his legacy and turned him from a guy everybody loved (he was insanely popular across the country) to a guy everybody loved to hate.
