We Finally Found the Best Way to Scout

  • After a long effort to test the scouting changes in FM22 from previous versions of Football Manager, we have a guide for scouting in this year’s FM. It is different than what I have recommended for years, but it immediately heated up my search for wonderkids on stream and I hope it is able to do the same for you. It has been far too long since we made a scouting tutorial based on this much evidence.
    I am sad that region scouting is over. Football Manager decided to make it a bit more intensive but it seems that it has actually been rendered largely ineffective, to be replaced by more micromanagement in our pursuit of wonderkids. I hope region scouting is able to make a comeback in future FM’s but I know that Football Manager is not into too much plug-and-play stuff, so time to start making guides like this.
    Much Love,
    FM Senpai

    While i really like the change in that it just feels much more natural to have a scout in two maybe three or four countries and actually gives you some decisions to make rather than essentially scouting the whole world with 20 scouts. It's also such an SI thing to keep the options in that just straight up don't work anymore in a way that appears broken.

I did a test save for 3 seasons and after season one got 2 potential wonderkids from Portugal when left on until finished and ongoing. I quite like the SecondYellowCard approach. You need good scouts or step one won't work but when you have developed your back room staff (or if just playing with a team who already have good scouting resources) you just que up a load of team reports, generally the best to use are national under 21/19 sides but you can do clubs and senior national sides as well. Those reports get info on all the players who play for that side, not a lot but enough that it'll separate players who might be 5 star players from the many who definitely aren't, generally he finds as many as 4/5 per team but often it's 1/2 or even none. He takes those potentially good players and then just keep queing them for one week scouting reports, dropping off those who fall below the 4 star potential or if 21 or over the 4 3 star current ability mark. I'm not sure it's the most efficient but other than queing up all the reports if like him you do it in one big batch (between streams) it doesn't take much effort and means you have an awareness of a lot of players.

  • @Ciiipp
    @Ciiipp Před 2 lety +1

    the best way to search regens is to search them trough player search by setting the key attributes for each role at at least 11 and 17 years... and set up scouting reports on those findings. For example if you search a Regen Central Defender (DC): Tackling - Marking - Heading - Acceleration - Pace = 11 or more.... if a guy at that age has those attributes it's a high chance is good, but you can filter them out by scout report 1week with your 20 Potential Ability Scouts

    Wouldn't it make sense to make scout range a single country, when that country is relatively large and has relatively high youth rating? In this video, you have put a scout range on Brazil and Argentina together, but those countries, in my book, warrant a scout each, especially considering the language is different. But, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay for example don't have large scouting pools, so it makes sense for a single person to cover them.
    Same could be said for Ex-Yugoslavia countries, though I don't know if the game treats Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian as vastly different languages when they really are not.

    As for scouting specific players, I think you need to set the assignment yourself to be the actual scout in the country the player is in.
    I've found that if you let the Chief Scout do it then it ends up with a random scout getting the assignment. So your Germany scout could end up scouting a player in Brazil while your Brazil scout ends up scouting a player in Germany.
    I use the default wish list to keep track of players I want to scout and then assign the next player when one report is finished. So a scout isn't bouncing between clubs and you get the reports you really want sooner.
    Finally I scout on a weekly basis, that way if anything comes up in a report that makes me not want the player I can end the process right away.
    It's a lot of micro management, but I think all of these make scouting more efficient by saving in travel time and the amount of time scouting duds.

    • @piersonjamesa
      @piersonjamesa Před 2 lety +1

      100% agree, my one tip is i have all my scouts renamed to say which country i have them in and then use that to quickly assign them to a player off the weekly meeting from the drop down menu. I also have 2 floating scouts to pick up players i dont have a nation scout assigned to, or if i have alot of workload for them. I also have avoided brazil due to cost and have only focused on countries with active leagues and have found that very useful.

    I never understood how individual scouting of a specific player and the scouting assignments of for example a nation interact. Or does he continue his assignment of scouting a nation aswell?

      This is what I want to find out more about as well. Sometimes you receive scout reports for a player say based in Argentina coming from a scout who I may have say assigned to Mexico because an Argentine team played in Mexico for whatever, yet if I ask them to scout player further for a week, which scout is the one who will scout this? Surely if I ask the scout based in Argentina to scout him further for 1 week, this should be quicker/less scout cost overall, but sometimes it just seems to wipe the original scout report from the Mexico based scout and starts the entire process over again..

      It seems either they can be in 2 places at once (unlikely) or they are taking time away from where they are assigned to catch a game halfway around the world.
      Honestly they need to add an assignment to take care of the priority scout list, maybe even make that assignable to your GM/DoF to help out smaller teams. (I know you can manually assign them, but I think this is a cleaner solution)

  • @jonnygriffiths7668

    Región scouting works perfectly, you just need to set the assignment until finished, then once they have sufficient knowledge (which is actually pretty easy to achieve through scouts with good adaptability) you can set to ongoing

    • @DerJuelz
      @DerJuelz Před 2 lety

      So the assigned scout gains knowledge of the region in FM22 quicker with „until finished“ than if you choose „ongoing“ while setting up the assignment? So then it works like it was on FM21 no matter if „ongoing“ or „until finished“

      @@DerJuelz If they have knowledge of all nations in the region after the initial term, then yes. If not, it won't. The known issue is that when set to region scouting, a scout without some knowledge of all nations in a region, who is then set to region scouting in that area, will arbitrarily stop scouting and his knowledge will never increase. BustTheNet did a video on the same thing, and it's a raised and acknowledged bug on the SI Forums.

    This doesnt work at all for me in fm24, for some reason my scouts are not finding any players in their respective nations, for example most of the u20 u21 squads of european and south american nations were barely scouted when i double checked. I wonder if im doing something wrong or not understanding how this works exactly.

    I think region scouting is just broken, why would it be in the game if it's not effective. It's another bug, because they have made regions smaller and somehow messed the scouting.

    • @dennisbulow9438
      @dennisbulow9438 Před 2 lety

      There's plenty things in the game that aren't effective. Plenty of the users playing the game, play it because you have to figure most things out on your own.
      There's plenty of good arguments for why it would be less effective. Generally the more specific ones task is the better you become at it.
      As a scout for Portugal you can end up knowing the academies, players and coaches very well and know the underlying systems. Whilst if you are a scout assigned to Portugal, Spain, Italy etc. that will be much harder and therefore you will be less effective. I'm not claiming this is necessarily the reason why region scouting is bad, what im saying is: just because its less effective does not mean its broken :) it could be, but there's plenty of good arguments for why it isn't.

      The problem, and SI has confirmed this issue, is that if you send a Scout with no knowledge of any nation in a region, to region scout as "ongoing," he will stop scouting in short order. But never tell you he did.
      The only way region scouting works is if the Scout has some knowledge of all nations in the region already.
      BustTheNet did a video on why this issue exists, and confirmed SI is aware of the bug.

    So, i don't play FM, but i like football and I like your energy, which is why i keep watching.
    You say that speaking the language is very helpfull for a scout to gain knowledge, which makes absolute sense, but I'm curious, what if you don't have a scout speaking the language of the place you want to scout. Does it matter who you send then? Or is there more real life logic at work?
    For example say you don't have a scout speaking italian but you want to scout italy? Would it be better to send a scout speaking romanian as both italian and romanian are romance languages or would it be better to send an austrian scout as austria and italy border eachother yet german and italian are different language families.
    Or let's say you want to scout South Africa, but you have no scout fluent in english. Would you then be better of sending the scout speaking fluent dutch, or the scout with a very basic understanding of the english language, but no way near fluent. dutch and afrikaans are mutually intelligable to a very high degree as afrikaans evolved from the dutch language. Being fluent in dutch might be more usefull to communicate with a south african speaking afrikaans, then trying to have a conversation in english with a south african when you have limited knowledge of english.
    I know this has nothing to do with football and everything with linguistics but I'm curious to what degree FM simulates the real world

    • @heimdalljay4210

There is currently no Option to send a scout on a language course to be more effective with scouting results. Hopefully scouting In FM23 advances further. Data has changed the game regarding scouting. In FM terms sending a scout off to Serbia for example and hoping he strikes lucky and finds a gem seems outdated. I could sign-up to Wyscout myself and produce a list of potential targets without ever watching a game of football in the country.

    Region Scouting was always incredibly unrealistic. If you think about it SI has like 1500 people who research players for the game, so that's roughly how many scouts you would need to have a full world knowledge - but most clubs have less than 20.
