Personally for me the weirdness and “tiring” editing really worked for me cuz especially by the end when Elvis is miserable and “trapped in this golden birdcage” the audience just feels exhausted like Elvis was after 5 years working at the international under the colonel’s thumb and the weirdness works as his life was just so unlike the life anyone else has ever lived.
The editing was perfect for my ADHD, plus it really captured the emotion and mindset of what Elvis was going through.
Exactly, his life was a whirlwind and so was the movie.
By the time we got to the Colonel not allowing Elvis to do a World Tour, I felt EXACTLY like Elvis when he said, “You toad. I outta shoot you in the God-damned face!!” I literally cried for an HOUR after the movie ended. The director’s point about what actually killed Elvis was his love for the fans - damn, that was so fuk’n powerful.
I think that it was interesting to choose to portray his final years only at the international, he actually toured a ton in the last seven or so years of his life so it could have easily been edited to show his psyche and physical state deteriorating but I suppose keeping it at the hotel gives the audience a place to get familiar with and show how the gilded veneer wore off and seeing that perspective drive him mad
@@seanboyize Baz said there is actually a 4-hour cut. A 4-hour ROUGH Cut. Directors edit scenes together to see how well they flow. I guess an hour and a half did not help the dramatic feel. Baz is thinking that maybe in five years he will go back and re-edit all the elements into a streaming series. I am hoping the '70s tours will be addressed in these elements.
One Elvis antidote I heard occurred in the Bristol Tennessee Holiday Inn circa 1974 or 1975. It was a Wednesday, and Elvis was in his room. Someone knocked on the door. Elvis opened it, dressed like Elvis wearing a Cape, Sunglasses, and holding a cane. It was housekeeping. Elvis and she developed a report. She said his room was the last for today. Then she was going to rush to church.
When she said "church" Elvis perked up grabbed his Bible and asked her to stay read scripture and pray.
I hope these tales Mr. Lurhmann conveyed in his movie weren't dramatic Embellishments. I understood Mr. Lurhmann was allowed access to the Colonel's archives located in the vaults of Graceland. Archives that have never been read or listened to by anyone except the Colonel and his assistant. Elvis' life doesn't need dramatic embellishment. His real-life experiences are dramatic enough for any motion picture.
I think Tom Hanks doing the accent and making every single action he does weird was intended to make the the Colonel be viewed as who he truly was, a person who didn't have an identity, manipulative, and just an asshat in general. I mean it worked for me, I hated the guy as soon as he opened his mouth lol

Not only that and not only did he sound, move, and act like Elvis, but he acted him ACCORDING to his life and ACCORDING to that timeline. Especially during Jimmy Fallon when he explained how he would talk as Elvis at different periods of his time. It’s phenomenal, I totally agree. If he does, I’ll be hella proud. First ever break out role for him, it’s a legendary icon who’s shoes are REALLY big to fill, and nails it?! God DAMN he deserves it!

Hearing a lot of reviewers complain about feeling exhausted after watching this.. You mean you felt tired by the end of a story where the main character is literally worked to the brink of death and somehow that's a bad thing?
Personally the movie to me was so entertaining that I really didn’t feel the runtime in any moment
I mean just because a movie wants you to feel a bad way doesn’t mean that’s always necessarily a good thing for people. Some people don’t want to feel exhausted and tired by the end of movies 😂
Baz Lurhman is a very divisive director so I'm not surprised. People either love or hate his style and while I do admit that it's a bit much (I'm autistic so it's liable to give me a sensory overload), you can't deny that it's unique and entertaining.

Elvis was one of those movies where you leave the theatre and think back on it the rest of the day. Beautiful cinematography and amazing acting! I loved it personally and believe it did feel a little bit long, but it almost fit the tone for the end portion. I wish we see more movies about old popstars and celebrities done like this.

I agree so much and I feel like the new Elvis film really opened eyes for the new generation like I obviously always knew of elvis but never really appreciated and actually listened to his music and I feel like this film changed that for me.

Elvis did nearly 2,000 shows in his life, 600 of them were in his last 8 years. He recorded his first song in 1954 and became an international superstar by 1956.
In my opinion, the movie is crazy and fast paced because that was Elvis’ life. The editing, yes, is fucking bananas sometimes. But to me it all makes sense when you’re watching the movie.
well once i watched it, i figured out the second half felt like it went on for ever because of how he felt so trapped so as an audience you feel that length and time he spent touring las vegas
@@gracekay2371 Agree. Trapped he was. It's an interesting film, no matter. ALL performances were exceptional in this. The film editing was fast paced but it did grind toward the end for this very reason.

I felt exactly the same until about the last half hour. The divorce/drug stuff was still running at lightning speed and by then I was ready for something more docu-style and naturalistic. But man, that first half is buck wild. Went and watched just the first hour in IMAX just to hear it again
Something I found surprisingly well done is how Elvis looks like a teenager at the start of the film, but really looks like a man by the end, even though it is still just the same Austin Butler.

Even though its make up and prosthetics, I really get you. You can still see austins face throughout the movie and it does look like he went from a teenager to a man.
At the end when he started repeating he's caught in a trap while smiling and you could see his manager sign stuff without his permission....That made me feel so uneasy, the cinematography was so good!! I didn't know alot about elvis but by the end I was exhausted emotionally. This movie was amazing!
Parker tried to get Elvis involved in the business part of his career. Elvis refused, saying that's what I pay you for.
I feel like this movie took the aspects that I loved about Rocketman, the surrealism and style, and amplified it by like a billion. I’ll have to wait until I see the movie whether I decide of that’s a good or bad thing

UPDATE: she fucking loved it. Thought the first hour was a bit long (so did I) but everything after his deployment she adored.

I am an Elvis fan and saw the real deal several times. There is no way to tell his story completely without making it a major miniseries. So going into this and knowing all his history already, I absolutely loved it! Even Tom Hanks as creepy Colonel….I think his portrayal was very Baz Lurhmannish. Austin was absolutely brilliant; he was spot on and took me back in time during the 70’s International Hotel scene. I even enjoyed the music mix ….it was different and refreshing….not the norm, which IMO was great. Definitely not the same old bio pic….Cinematography was brilliant. Let’s face it, Elvis was 1000% over the top in every aspect of his life….Charisma, Voice, Swagger, so this movie I felt fit the bill. I loved 🥰 it!

Spot on. Absolutely great movie. I don’t understand all the bad reviews. Movies are supposed to bring out all the scales of emotions out of the audience and imo it did it in an almost perfect way
@@mottiyos1 You don't understand the bad reviews, seriously? It was a 160 min movie and 70% of was a montage. At no point, did the director let anything breath. A scene ends and its a smash cut to another scene that could be the next day or years later. I will admit I liked the over stylized editing in the beginning of the film but when the mom died during a narration and then within 2 minutes he just crying in a closet, I lost it. I started to pay crazy attention to every time the editing was lazy or when they rushed storylines. I can't say what I thought about the film overall because I still need process what I saw, but I can 100% see why the knee jerk reaction is that the film is bad.

@@mottiyos1 I agree. It had to be done exactly as Baz did it due to the time constraints & no idea why folks keep picking on Tom Hanks. They need to watch videos of the real colonel. Lots of younger uptight guys with no info about the real Elvis are not being fair about this film. It's annoying.
Karsten is a very intelligent film critic. However I disagree completely with his opinion on pace. The pace embodied Elvis’ life- a nonstop ride of the ups and downs and lust and obsession with the idea of happiness through fame. Elvis is a legend. This is by far the best depiction of his life and montage is a powerful and delicate tool in filmmaking, used in a very accessible, entertaining way in this film. As someone who grew up listening and adoring Elvis and his beautiful yet down-falling life, this film reminded me of being a kid and listening to his music.
As a big fan of Elvis, I cried, like a lot. I waited 3 years for this movie to come out and honestly, it did not disappoint whatsoever. Austin was born for this role, when I first heard that he was playing Elvis I had my doubts. But Austin did so so well and I don’t think anyone could’ve done it better than him. Tom was good too but Austin outshined him.

Interesting tidbit: Elvis died on Aug 16th and Austin was born on Aug 17th...it's like he was literally born to play Elvis. I love Harry Styles and while I had my reservations about Austin getting the part over Harry, once I saw the movie there was no doubt that Austin was the right choice. He did an incredible job and I so hope he wins the Oscar.
Totally disagree with you Karsten. I had no issues with the movie length - and it goes at a steady pace throughout - never too fast or slow. Didn’t look at my phone once to check the time. And it’s easy to work out when it moves to each timeline in the story. Brilliant film - and I’m not a huge Elvis fan.
I agree with your comment so much! I just got back from the theaters... I don't recall checking my phone more than once. I had to leave to go to the bathroom (even though I didn't want to) and I rushed back as soon as I could. amazing movie.
Exactly, if anything the movie points out very clearly where we are in the timeline with various editing styles. Years are pointed out, the font changes according to the decade and the characters change as well, not to mention that I can count the slow moments on one hand. Incredibly paced movie, and it truly made me feel like I was on an exciting ride at a fair.

@@jackyjess7273 I feel like the colonel was kinda accurate as he wasn’t actually an American. He was a Dutch immigrant and his accent wasn’t all that convincing, was kinda over the top, and there were moments where I could hear his Dutch accent. So I feel that Tom’s weird accent kinda made sense
Absolutely agreed with you. Sir was a showman with all his glitzy outfit. Baz with Moulin Rouge and Great Gatsby and all the glitzy and glamour. it was ver fitting that Baz was the right person and also Austin was Amazing.👍♥️. I would love to see Baz doing a series to be shown on Netflix like Downton Abbey. We then get to see all the stuff he cut. He looks excited but very very tired. so who knows.

Just came back from the theatre and what an experience. An incredibly touching moment for me was the sweet old lady next to me sniffling with tears at one point in the film and I think that goes to show how impactful of a movie this was. It may not be perfect, but it definitely did the job
I went to an early doors screening, and the cinema was packed, despite the film being out for the past two weeks. I was probably the only person under 65 by far, but it was a touching moment when the audience cheered and clapped at the end
This was a fantastic movie. Not one second was boring, and most importantly, i felt like i was watching Elvis, not an actor playing him. I saw it in Dolby Digital, and listening to his music in a theatrical surround sound is amazing.
Argh I'm SO jealous! I came to it late, was not even thinking of watching if not for my daughter's insistenceand until she showed me the trailer.. So we first streamed it at home then I HAD to go to theater! NOW I WISH I could see it on the big screen like IMAX with awesome sound. Actually wish I could watch Austin play Elvis in Vegas and I hate Vegas.

Much like Elvis, Britney was also a huge celebrity who was being controlled and thrown on stage by fake people milking her for all the money she was worth, no matter her mental health or addictions etc. Makes sense they'd use her music in the film in that regard.
The court appointed lawyer in charge of her conservatorship was on 10k a week and her scumbag dad 2.5k. Until she was 39.

@@tatemloucks190 They remixed "Toxic" with "Viva Las Vegas". It's in a transition scene in the tour bus once they have the baby as it cuts to their time in Hollywood.
ALSO i appreciated the subtle reference to Britney herself was based in Vegas for quite a traumatic point in her career as well, she described that time of her life saying “Being a guest in Las Vegas is way better than being me…or wait…is it because my family got to be the stars when I worked in Vegas?” and then “I was nothing more than a puppet to my family, yet to the public, I just performed on stage and did what I was told to do… but it was worse than that because it was accepted and approved by the people I loved the most.”
I have no clue if that connection was made intentionally, but it seems like with Vegas being so performance based 24/7, it’s an easy place for greed to get carried away and for an artist to be exploited :/
The weird, frenetic editing perfectly mirrored Elvis' life and energy. It threw me off at first, but I'm so glad Baz went with his true vision. I think it was brilliant.
The trailer IS bad, I watched 2 minutes of your commentary here and literally drove to the nearest showtime for it. No regrets. Beautiful, captivating movie, at times I felt like screaming and cheering i loved the showing of the fan craze around elvis

Yeah I was lucky enough to catch a later showing at night and the theater was empty save me and my date. And oh man we had so much fun we were singing along, cheering and clapping and I was even dancing and doing my Elvis impression in the theater. I had so much fun.... Thank you... Thank you very much
I adored Elvis. Disagree with a lot of things here when I realized I’m supposed to feel tired and exhausted as Elvis does, when I realized that in the theater I was able to grasp the film even better then the previous two hours. I don’t think Hanks nearly “ruined” the movie, Baz said he wanted to create a different quality to his character where we keep thinking “what’s his deal” and it worked for me. I love when actors throw themselves in a role. Yes, it is long but I never felt like it overstayed its welcome.

I’m reevaluating everything I thought I knew about Elvis after watching the Baz Luhrmann movie and reading more about his life. I’m not a huge Elvis fan, but I still feel a weird kind of grief for what could have been.
I always thought Elvis had everything, and took his career to the greatest heights a person could achieve. But it turns out he was successful and legendary *despite* being consistently held back.

I had to sit through several minutes of the credits to collect myself when this movie ended. This movie made me love him and miss him like he was alive yesterday. The film completely embodied Elvis, and Baz was made to direct this movie, as Austin was made to play Elvis.
Thinking back after watching the movie, it was unusual to me how Elvis' rise was only a half hour of the movie and the rest was his fall. Usually in a biopic half or more of the movie is the joy of fame and riches and the negatives gradually creep in to take over, but here it was the opposite. No doubt buttressed by the narrator himself, all the evils in Elvis' life appeared to be the catalyst for the brisk pace of the movie. Elvis' challenges were an almost unbearable series of violent eventuations. The end result is that I left the movie seeing Elvis as a sort of messianic figure that unknowingly sacrificed himself for others. It was much more solemn than joyful.

I feel there could have been a bit more soul into the film itself. I was looking forward to seeing who Elvis was, as a person, as a father, as a husband, as a son, as a friend, how he met his wife, their romance, what challenges he faced growing up, how did he overcome those challenges to get his first record deals with Sun Records, what he felt when his first record achieved success, what he felt on anything.
See the Kurt Russell version, you will be pleased!
I really enjoyed the movie, but they probably glossed over the relationship/marriage with Priscilla because it was quite toxic (worse than in the movie). I wanted to see if they were going to tackle that, but I’m not surprised at all that they left it out tbh

@@Sophie_Pea I've read her book twice, as well as others about her, as well as Guralnick, and more. I have seen more toxic relationships in my life than they ever had. Elvis was not around that much. Then she left for another man. Then, they became friends until the day he died. Lisa said she never knew her parents were divorced. He spent time with both of them and he visited Priscilla's house often. So If you want to know how Elvis felt, listen to It's Midnight, Listen Cilla on You Tube. She was in the audience in Vegas after the divorce. Speaks volumes.

For me when i watch a baz luhrmann film, i go in knowing there will unapolegetic and incredibly sincere goofiness. You either like baz's unhinged directing and editing or you dont. Thats just the way it is with his films. I for one love it and i enjoyed elvis. I feel like distinctly manic directing is a running theme with australian directors and its awesome.
at the end of the film, they talk about Elvis's impact on music in the future. I think that was the reason for the newer songs scattered throughout the movie, to show Elvis's influence in the music industry.

It’s definitely an idiosyncrasy exclusive to him, but I can’t help but respect the man’s unfettered auteurship.
He actually restrains himself pretty well. Uses it mostly in the beginning and let’s Elvis music run through to the end
I dont mind it. Its just another layer of unapolagetic crazy on the unhinged lasagne that is this film. All his films are heavily layered with sensory components to the point of near incomprehension, but i find it fascinating above all else. None of the details he adds ever really feels random so i like peeling through the layers and wonder about the reasons he makes the directions he does.
I visibly cringed when the rap music started playing and continued to cringe even after it ended. Horrible choice. Good movie though

The one thing that’s been holding me back on watching this one is I feel like I shouldn’t unless it’s going to address how horrible of a man he was to his wife and beat the ever living shit out of her and made her dye her hair and dress like him not to mention he started dating her when she was underage

Now ,I’m not so sure abt how to present the bad things a historical person has done when they were alive. And I’m sure there are many suitable ways to present them. But to me,the director can skip their bad parts in their autobiography. Cause well, it’s their life story and biography. Now that they have passed, it’d be great to just only present the things most people remember them for.
And look again, I’m sure there’s more suitable ways to touch on this subject matter. Elvis was not a perfect person and he’s done some things he shouldn’t. But what I’m trying to say is, when it comes to presenting actual people who have passed. It’d be great to only present the stuff people remember them for and not all the bad things they also did. Because that’s respect and more people will remember them for the great things they did

The movie was definitely long but I’ve waited 3 years for this and I absolutely loved it. The movie started at 10:30 PM and we didn’t end up leaving the theater tell about 1:15 AM but I loved every bit of it. AUSTIN definitely just started the race for best actor and the movie will definitely get nominated for best picture. For me the first hour was boring and weird but for me the last 1hr and 40 minutes was MAGNIFICENT 🙌🏾. I definitely agree with the Hanks situation me and my friends thought he was annoying , but Baz actually did want Hanks to give a villain type vibe that was his whole theme even from the trailer so they definitely succeeded it was just weird!
Elvis was so good!! I took my nana who actually went to Graceland as a little girl and watched all of his movies growing up to the theater with me and we both were BLOWN AWAY! The directing will be what some people definitely gripe with but Austin Butler was PHENOMENAL! As the move went on he transformed further into Elvis all over. Tom hanks was great too!
I saw the movie last night, took my parents to see it too. When I heard Karsten criticize Tom Hank's "Dutch" accent, I couldn't help but laugh a bit, because that's EXACTLY what my stepdad actually got on about right after leaving the theater. Other than that, we all really enjoyed it, despite the occasional historical inaccuracy here or there.
Apparently the real Col. Parker really talked that way. I guess he'd kind of switch back and forth between a Dutch and American accent. Sounded weird, but from what I've heard I'm pretty sure it's accurate
For a movie that's over two and a half hours, I never felt bored! I think it's due to that bombastic style of Luhrmann. I wasn't sure how well his style would apply to the story of Elvis, but after seeing it, it felt appropriate.
I cried during the part where his mama dies. I lost my mama last year. He loved her so much.
i think the directing perfectly showed how fast paced, messy and reckless Elvis's life was, made you confused and pounded your head much like Elvis would have felt during his later years

At first, I was hesitant on seeing this movie. Now that I’ve seen it, it’s one of the best movies of the year so far for me. One of the few movies to make me cry.
I'm so glad that someone finally admits how amazing Austin Butler is.
Everyone is always quick to write off biopics and their main actors with the standard "they don't look like x at all!!!" Even though said actor has done a spectacular job.
When will people get that talent is more important than being a copy of the actual person? We have come to a place where people want cosplayers to play certain people even though they have 0 acting experience..

I think my only issue with the movie was how it handled each topic it was discussing and I beleive that it did not merge very well. But i can see how difficult it must have been for them to try and tackle such a large subject matter as he is Elvis Presley after all.
This movie is Amazing! Loved it. This movie was filled to the brim with all the emotions. It was sexy, sweaty, love, lust, greed, betrayal, infamy. Austin Butler did a fantastic job portraying Elvis he put his heart and soul into this part and i completely appreciate it. Tom Hanks was unrecognizable and incredible. Definitely a must see movie.
I couldn’t disagree more about the length, it didn’t feel long at all to me, if anything it felt like it ended rather abruptly and prematurely. Kinda felt like that tail end of his life wasn’t touched on enough, it was just kinda like “oh yeah he died this year the end”. But overall loved it and Austin butler should 100% get an Oscar for it.
We saw him wiggle, wiggle, for sure, incredible performance. Austin Butler knocked it out of the park on this one. I can see an Oscar nom for best actor next year. Also I’ve never thought I would see Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide background character play Elvis, he came along way since Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure, that Hannah cameo and Zoey 101 oh I almost forgot he was in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood pretty solid gig there as well. Next stop Feyd-Rautha in Dune: Part II the best of lucks my boy !!!

I literally told my friend that this movie was like the Great Gatsby of 2022 with the weird transitions and editing style, why did I not think to consider it’s the same director. That being said, those transitions do feel unnatural, but in both cases it kind of goes along with the fast-paced life the characters are living in those moments.

i saw this movie last night with my elvis obsessed mom, she loved it. i heard elvis songs play in my home all through my childhood and always appreciated the music but told my mom that it sucked that he stole black music and gained so much from it in a time when black people couldnt. she always told me it wasnt like that but i didnt really listen to her. after watching this and learning more about him, now i understand. thsi was a very well made movie that made me cry even though i didnt approve of his success and also behavior towards priscilla. i had no idea he had such a miserable life and everything he ever had was stolen from him. safe to say im an elvis fan now.
Thank you for keeping an open mind to the truth. What this movie didn't touch was Elvis' immense generosity - much of it directed toward black friends - visiting in jail and the hospital, paying hospital bills and making sure they received credit on album liners and covers and royalties.
Also Culture gets influenced in different groups everytime thats just how it works, Christianity was originally a religion of the Isralitites but it manage to spread to Greece Rome and even Africa into Ethiopia (Ethiopia in particular still practice their version of Christianity and have developed their own art and culture surrounding it) or when Samurai Movies were influenced by Westerns and Vice versa, so calling Elvis a Culture Vulture is probably too discrediting to him as Cultural Appropriation refers to a specific type of action where a group usually White uses images and actions associated with other cultures and used to promote prejudice or the adopting culture it originated from is unacknowledged by a group or government (or in other words its more about intent and acknowledgment than simply taking influence from other cultures), Elvis can't really be blamed much here as he lived in a period where even talking about Black Culture was Taboo, and as shown in the movie he did support Civil Rights.
TLDR: A Western Artist that Draws Anime and wares a Kimono isn't Culturally Appropriating, A Western Artist that Draws Anime and wares a Kimono to create Bigoted art about Japanese people is Culturally Appropriating.

If you read about Elvis, as I have done for years, you know he stole nothing. If that were the case , throw in country, jazz, opera, and on and on. He was a mixture of them all, but mostly he was himself. He embodied soul and charisma on his own. Didn't need any stealing. You are born with that. Cannot teach it. That the uploader starts right out saying he appropriated black music showed me then and there that he believed what the movie is trying to show you. That he was only influenced by blacks. Hogwash to the uploader. Go read some books and learn about all the blacks who loved working with Elvis. Loving writing him songs. Take a look at all the blacks he helped in his life. Knowledge is power. I loved this movie, but there was way too much with the black influence when he had so many more, as well as what he was born with. If it's still in print, read Race, Rock and Elvis. I learned more from that book than most. Including Guralnick's. Baz did good here, but took liberties with this aspect of Elvis.
In Moulin Rouge, Baz talked about how he did the quick edits and modern songs to give a feeling of the excitement and sensory overload of what it would be like for someone being there at the time. I think he does the same here with the modern songs, remixing his originals into something on the developing edge of music now, to show how he repurposed others music in a new way.
I saw it yesterday and thought it was amazing. I’ve been a big Elvis fan since I was little, so I was really looking forward to this one, and it did not disappoint. Austin Butler was phenomenal as Elvis, and his singing was fantastic, and Tom Hanks was great as the Colonel. Their whole dynamic was fun to watch. And the visuals were stunning, and Baz Luhrman’s directing was of course great. The thing about Baz Luhrman is that all his films feel like you’re at a glamorous party where the drinks are cold and of the finest quality and the staff went all out on the party decorations. And he was 100% the right man to tell the story of The King.
So…this is Baz back to form. The Great Gatsby was him showing some restraint (for the better of the film, in my opinion), but this is just as Baz Luhrmann as ever.
The beginning was more stylized. I feel the ending was a lot more sober in comparison.

Because of how we’re getting movies about the biggest stars of all time, the next logical step would be a movie about Michael Jackson. And I can’t wait. I desperately want a respectful and unbiased telling of Michael’s story where it shows both the highs and lows of his career and his family life.

As far as I know, we don’t have complete confirmation on him taking advantage of them in that way. But regardless, a potential movie could talk about that and about how the media was constantly concerned and asking about it all the time. It’d be another aspect of the movie of his life. I don’t know if the director/ writer will decide to say that he did those things or keep it up to audience interpretation but I still think a movie about his life would be interesting.

I loved the film from start to finish. If Austin Butler's performance isn't an award winning performance I don't know what is! Austin Butler is Elvis.
I like how for most singing parts in the movies, especially the ‘If I Can Dream’ and ‘Unchained Melody’ scene, the screen was like a low quality video, and not like 4k or clear, which made it better because it actually felt like you were watching elvis singing during those actual times.

Austin Butler gives a 5 star performance, I mean, he is fucking sensational as Elvis.
What I feared came true, Baz Luhrmann’s style ruined some parts of this film. Modern artists covering Elvis songs when Austin Butler is right there is downright irritating. The quick cuts and transitions are not my jam. And some of the green screen looks awful.
Also, Tom Hanks. He shouldn’t be in this movie as much as he is. The narration he gives, completely pointless and at times disgusting. This feels more like the Colonel Parker & Elvis movie than just Elvis. What the hell is up with that?
All that being said, Austin Butler really is phenomenal in this film. 100% deserves an Academy award nomination. This movie made me cry 3 times! And I cried after getting back to my car.
Couldn't have said it better! Wasn't a huge fan of the modern music. Didn't fit the film, the random scenes in the beginning that didn't flow, a lot for focus on Colonel.
But Austin's performance, a round of applause. 👏 He was so spot on. Definitely should be nominated for best actor. 🏆
I personally love the incorporation of modern music in all of Baz’s films. I was not disappointed with how they did this- especially the toxic viva la Vegas mashup (why is that the only one not on Spotify?!). I love how Baz plays with different styles of music within the context of the film like in Gatsby, moulin rouge and even in earlier films like strictly ballroom.
I was skeptical but I just saw it and everything works. Baz’s style is present but he isn’t uncontrolled like previous films, Tom Hanks actually really works, and holy wow Austin Butler blew me away.

I’ve seen this movie twice in the theater so far, and I’m going to have to disagree with you on your opinion on Tom Hanks character. I thought that he did a phenomenal job considering how difficult it must have been to recreate such a person. His acting didn’t fall flat with me at all.

It was exhausting, but very good films can do that. It made it all the more sad when I realized he was about to die. By the time the last scene started, the emotions just poured out. Most of the audience was crying.
I saw this movie high on mushrooms and had no idea it was a Baz Luhrmann film. So you can imagine how incredibly confused I was through the entire affair.
Something that drew me into the movie more than anything else was how distant Elvis felt. Even though we were watching his life I still left the theater feeling like he was incredibly out of reach, which absolutely was intentional. It makes me want to know more about him and gives a sense of what it was like to watch his stardom from the outside at the time. Amazing storytelling
My take on the soundtrack: it puts a modern audience in the feel of the time. The same way Elvis has his first performance and the women are damn near having orgasms, that not how it really was. That was letting us know just how insane it was for the time. Dojacat played when he was going to a blues club and was in a very hip Nashville area. The pacing was a mess for me. But overall dope film.
Baz Lurhman's pacing is my favorite thing about his films. Yet, this film's pacing was exhausting in a way that coincided with the plot like you said, and that's what made it special for me. Elvis lived a very chaotic life, so it only makes sense that the movie would be chaotic in nature.
I saw a 3 minute ad pop up for this movie. And I was fascinated by the whole thing.
Felt a sharp “oh goodness” when I saw the Moulin Rouge directing connection, and was not surprised for a second when you talked about the editing of Elvis. Moulin Rouge feels like a bad fever dream, I’ve had more coherent visits to the white rooms in the asylum.
I honestly loved this movie, and the directing. I knew literally nothing about Elvis before this movie, but i loved it. It felt like (at least to me) that it went by super fast. I may be the minority, but i have no complaints with this movie.
The only thing i thought was odd was the doja cat song. Everything else was fantastic
I absolutely hated the amount of cuts they did in this movie. It was frenetic to the point where I was actually getting kind of nauseous. There were some bad soundtrack choices as well... But Butler was great and the overall narrative was followable. Apparently I've heard from people that Hanks' performance was actually pretty accurate somehow even though it was wild. I wish someone just got into Baz's ear about the camera cuts and soundtrack and then we coulda had something quite good.
Wow, I felt the opposite, I was so immersed in the film that it flew by!!! Austin really vanished into that role.

I agree about the odd choice of music. I was sitting there enjoying the movie until the out-of-the-blue hip-hop music. It just took me out of the movie and was thinking "what the f-". I was expecting some blues and other music from that era.
This was THE BEST music biopic ever made! The fact that Elvis's family said that "this is how it happened" and it made them relive memories actually makes this a better movie.
I think Baz just tried to recreate the success he had when he incorporated Jay Z's The Throne into The Great Gatsby. That worked tbh, Doja Cat did not 💀💀

Was a really good movie. Been a long time to see a good movie about a famous celebrity. A must see and it really helped me get an understanding of what his career was like behind the scenes in that Time. Definitely worth watching!

Saw it earlier today, and going in was apprehensive about the runtime, but didn't feel it at all... unlike Karsten. So I guess ymmv. I felt Baz didn't get in his own way as much as I was expecting him to so the film really worked overall. Butlers performance is worth the ticket of admission and the clear highlight. Baz's (I always mix up the spelling for his surname) style really works here probably better than in anything else he's made. I think it's his best work. The film is just another biopic but a very good one at that.
I havent seen this movie yet, but I would highly reccomend Love and mercy. By far the best music biopic

Watched the movie today. I feel it was good. At certain points, I was confused or just bored, but it kept me intrigued and entertained. I think some parts were drawn out, but overall I liked it. It is something I would recommend.
I love this type of movies, where there's a lot of movement, half an hour has passed, and I was ready for a break... BUT the movie keep going at the same pace and I felt my heart racing by EVERY SINGLE movement, gesture, COSTUME, EVERYTHING. I was at the edge of my seat
"Best looking movie of 2006" really sums this one up. Baz is a strange, strange man and I can't look away from anything he does. Elvis was a good time.
I'm glad u touched on how flashy and quick the cinematography was. It was like it was well shot and had nice visuals but also almost too quickly cut like a bad action movie. It was a good movie tho. It did feel like 5 years I forgot it was 2 in the afternoon and thought it was 2 in the morning sitting in the theater confused for a second.
Austin Butler was amazing. He absolutely did amazing and just melted into that role!
The hayride scene with the reaction of the girls in the crowd was very well done. The little speech Col Tom gives about what the girl was feeling, although kinda creepy, really drives home the effect Elvis had on women, like a real life Fonzie.
If my grandma was still alive, she would have loved this movie and the Elvis actor. Dude was spot on and killed it.
