No it wasn't. It meant more families could enjoy pubs along with non smokers who no longer had to chuck all their clothing into the laundry each time they went to a pub, to get rid of the smell of stale cigaret smoke…Pubs are dying because the drinking culture has changed and booze is a lot cheaper from supermarkets.

To be fair when the ban came in 21% of Brits smoked. Now it's 15%, and falling. You can vape in a pub, no ban on that, it's just that many pubs think the smoking ban applies to vapes to, it doesn't. It's up to individual pubs to make their own policy in that regard.

UK pubs are surviving but If you go to them during week they are either closed or operate reduced hours.
There is now a culture of drinking in the house but the pubs survived by having elderly smokers who kept them going during the week but don't go out now because of mobility issues.
UK pubs are surviving but it has changed where people go out have a few drinks and a meal.
Depending on your viewpoint that may be a good thing but the culture of going to the pub has changed and IMHO isnt for the better as there is no atmosphere and is a soulless experiences.
Smoking bans should be voluntary where people have the choice of going to pubs that offer both smoking and non smoking policies

Price inflation on food is difficult for many low paid workers in Spain. But, I took this as an opportunity to change diet snd lifestyle for the better. I no longer buy processed food (which has soared in price), i eat less, and eat better quality produce. Examples, I do not buy Soda (Cola etc) Sugar, margarine, cereals etc etc (its just corporates making people sick for profits). I eat out less and fast occasionally… All good for my health, and i think many more should participate.. Be smart and take care of yourself.. great show Stu, keep up the good work, Neil

Hi Stu, I left Spain last August, I rented a small but very comfortable house at 550 Euros including electric and water, my replacement agreed to pay 800 plus electricity and water! I left because I could see that my rent would soon increase, my food and necessities had increased in cost by 22%, my heart goes out to the lower income workers, but at some stage, and very soon, pay will have to increase otherwise there will be no staff in the hospitality area 😮😮😮

Regarding the drop in the number of customers due to the smoking ban. Cry me a river. We had it implemented in Ukraine more than ten years ago. If anything the bars and restaurants have seen a larger number of customers since then. People with children can now walk into a restaurant patio and expect to enjoy a meal with a side of fresh air. Smokers simply step outside and have a cigarette in a designated area and it works fine

Just rent is over half the monthly income of most families in Spain.
And a terrace in a Spanish bar is not a patio.
A terrace is completely open in the street. You can see pictures of Spanish bars and how tables are displayed.

What an extremely selfish point of view. I can’t believe it’s even accurate as the home market here in the UK, where pubs were invented, has taken a massive pummelling. 100s closing by the week. I’m sure there are other factors involved, but by denying publicans the right to choose how they run their businesses has had a massive detrimental effect. I pity those who think it’s a grand idea to limit peoples’ freedoms & choices but it’s pretty much endemic, worldwide.

I have seen a dramatic fall in the number of people smoking on terraces, /out door seating areas in my area of Spain. Considering that smoking was almost compulsory in Spain a few years ago, it is truly remarkable. Indeed at a couple of my favourite holiday destination eateries in Arroyo de la Miel, Benalmadena, people are not smoking these days in outdoor areas, those that do move away from the customers. They are doing it in order to be considerate to others. I have also noticed a significant in crease in Americans / Canadians holidaying. in my neck of the woods. Most are there for the same reasons that the rest of us go - because it is brilliant, safe, excellent value for money. There is also no real language barrier, either.

Freedoms are a privilege & people seem to be giving away their rights due their own selfishness! Also, smoking has been something the Spanish have openly done as part of their culture.
