I'd say "acceptable" is much more subjective than cosmetically flawed. What's considered acceptable is going to be different between each person where as cosmetically flawed isn't really. There will be different degrees of cosmetically flawed but cosmetically flawed is cosmetically flawed no matter the degree. Acceptable on the other hand could be anywhere from minor scuffs and scratches to functional but trashed and filthy. Acceptable to DKoldies isn't saying much and generally lets them get away with something being dirty more easily.

@@jrob0021 Yeah I saw the video about the magic eraser and how the finish is taken off. As well as plastic erosion is way more occurrent then before (shredded plastic will allways continue to have plastic that can easily come off)
@@jrob0021 btw those controllers look exactly the same as that which I saw back in 2014 onwards. A video game retailer in the UK "GAME" (main video game retailer in the UK) had Oem controllers and GAME controllers called "GAME ware". These were defective controllers as we purchased over 10 of them and all break and become non-functional after less than one day. Sure they were dirt cheap but dirt cheap does not equal good value for money as you end up buying too many of them that you spend more than an OEM controller without realising. Those controllers by Old School or whatever brand are bad controllers

I agree with you on the more games but it was from major developers. There was definitely more experimentation by the big boys. I mean Ubisoft used to do more different things, but it seems to just be all the open sandbox collectathon and Anno. EA has a whole meme around killing studios.
You gotta remember that back then games cost about 18¢ from original conception to full release.
Nowadays they’re spending the GDP of a large European country just to get the game to an alpha stage to pitch it to the execs.
A major flop could realistically financially destroy a major studio. This is why remakes, re-releases, DLC, and micro-transactions are a thing; they’re cheap and they sell well.
It’d be like if you were given a choice to jump off a bridge and have a 50/50 shot at surviving, but if you survived you’d get $100,000 or you could get in your car and drive away for $75,000… the risk really isn’t worth it for them.
@@Fetidaf yes but it's also lead to a hard push towards multi-player all the time now. See GTA. As someone who never plays multi-player it blows. I got the newest cod on a deep discount and they buried the story mode at the bottom of the menus.

@@robertg6339 rich has pretty much stopped doing dk videos, he did a couple after they claimed to be refurbishing consoles and found they did start to do better and even gave them credit for it, its an old story now --this console was from January when they were still not refurbishing so its no surprise it arrived in this condition

A two part baking soda (Arm & Hammer) to one part water to make a paste then with a soft rag apply to the surface you want to de-scratch and using a circular motion, rub out the scratches. You could spend more money and get one of those "fogged" up headlight kits that clears the plastic like new.
I think McGuire's is one and Turtle Wax has one also.
I'm hearing that toothpaste will work also.
I once asked a local Gamestop about a used Wii U. That location said they quit selling their refurbrished units because kept getting returned for the screen failing of some other failure. Whatever thier refubrishment center was using to clean it was damaging it.
This location would only sell used units they received in working condition.
These days I have a specific repair shop that I routinely use to look over any used consoles I buy. Even if the retailer I get it from specifies its "refurbrished."

As someone who owns a 60gb ps3, my number one pet peeve with it is the shiny surface. I have mine sitting on my desk and when the sun shines on it, the chrome trim reflects like ten times the amount of light and it nearly blinds me
A week ago I bought a backward compatible ps3 for 10$ it has some deep scratches on the top but overall good condition. Best 10$ I’ve ever spent

more heat escaping the system actually means you have better cooling, if the load is the same. a better radiator will have hotter air coming off of it because that means it is removing more heat.

That isn't completely true, if you have a console CAKED with dust, it will heat up more and thus have hotter air escaping. Also, he shows the internal temperature is also lower (as well as the exhaust temperature), so it's clear it has better cooling
In fact, he basically mentions over this when he goes over the different power supplies
Actually more heat escaping from the vents also means the Thermal paste is totally dried and nothing is being dissipated and the dust inside is not allowing air to circulate either.
Conspiracy theory hat on... This was a former Gamestop refurbished console that DKOldies just slapped their sticker on, which explains the Magic Eraser job, the weirdness with stripped/missing screws, and the fact that it was still dusty despite looking like somebody was in there.

Luckily I found the same model at my local flea market for $50. I was so excited to finally get my hands on one. It works, but i do need to clean it out and fix or replace the disk drive.

Just last month, I started rebuilding my PS2 collection cause there hasn't been a Socom game since the PS3, I also got a game called Blitz The League, and MK Shaolin Monks. Idk if games back then were better or if it's just nostalgia, but it seems harder to have fun in games these days
Blitz was funny. The gruesome injuries and then the option to inject your player with steroids to get them back on the field.

I remember decades ago buying consoles brand new six months after release with a heavy discount and bundle and updated version for cheaper than what they are secondhand and dirty at DKOldies. I also remember giving them away or selling them dirt cheap because there was no market for older consoles back then, especially due to emulation and when backwards compatibility became a thing. Now they are like gold. All I can think of is Tulip Mania, maybe driven by desperation and nostalgia.
That’s so true about there being way more variation of sports games back in the day. I remember on the PS1 with football games, you had Adidas power soccer, Actua soccer, FIFA, ISS, Michael Owen’s world league soccer……
I've been wondering about the third party controller issue you've been having as of late with the PS3. I don't have the type of PS3 controller you have, however I do have a third party wired controller for the PS3. Have had the same issue when playing PS2 games, whenever the game starts it shuts off the controller and you can't use it. I've found though that if you hold down the power button on the controller as soon as it shuts off, for like 10 seconds or so, the controller turns back on and you can use it. Don't know if this is the case with all third party controllers, just know with mine I've been able to make it work with PS2 games on PS3. Just wondering if this is an issue with certain third party controllers on PS3.
There is stuff you can buy for glass that will fill in little grooves and will mask most surface level scratches. It's mostly made for smart phone screens but I can't imagine it wouldn't work here. Then again, can't buy that stuff at the dollar store in bulk like magic eraser.

You got an original DKOldies special edition refurbished premium console with extra features like original dust and dirt. It's a beautiful collectors item.
Warranty void stickers are actually illegal under US law. It would be against US federal law for DKOldies to void a warranty or refuse a return on an item if the sticker is broken. This is due to the 1975 Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Sony actually got an FTC warning sent to them a few years back because they were enforcing warranty void sticker rules.
If you was to clean and refurbish it now you could then repeat the thermal camera test and discover how different it is then to how it was. Just a thought!
i love how they added replace thermal paste if needed, yeah yuou need to replace the thermal paste when you separate the heat sink from the cpu. not to mention on older consoles like ps3 and xcbox 360, i bet the thermal paste has never been replaced. meaning it's probably turned to rubber.

Pre-owned or refurbished is a gamble,I got a replacement GameCube & I ended up replacing the top of the system shell with my old GC shell top because someone cut a bit of the lid section that let the system know the lid was closed and the new spring on the newish other top was crap...but the used system did power up & work perfect.and I did buy replacement power supply,AV cables and controllers......let the buyer beware.

I’ve used magic eraser on an old ps2 that was in white, and it was super yellowed. A few wipes and it was back to being white and it didn’t have any new scratches. It also doesn’t have much shine on it though
My "refurbished" gamestop PS3 also had that "coke" or soda like substance look in a few spots on the motherboard. I believe it's leftover flux from a previous repair, was just never wiped up.
Just a question when you did the temperature test was it in celcius or farenheit

I have a CECHAO1 which I've refurbished myself. Relaced with good quality thermal paste and new thermal pads. The CECHA01 runs hot. It bumps up to fan speed 3 (75% speed) but CPU and RSX run cool. CPU 71c and RSX runs at 51c. That is normal. Fans just run fast and hard good for winter days hahaha

You can see in your thermal imagery that the EO1 was blowing heat onto the AO1 ... I don't know if that caused any of the increased heat but it may have ...
2:34 This is why I ALWAYS take apart my console and wash the shell with water and Dawn Platinum when repairing it. I dry THOROUGHLY after every wash.
I am curious about an update on this console in about a year or two. All of the backwards compatible PS3 consoles will break if not already.

"Good" condition should be renamed to "Working" condition. It's probably what they meant and it would be a lot less misleading, but still doesn't change the fact that page that shows the work they do is also misleading. This is how I think that page actually works:
The first three lines are very conditional.
They'll only "open" it if they can't clean it out just by air, and only will if they're forced to. They make it very clear on line 2 and line 3 is also very conditional...again, only if they "have" to.
The blue boxes with larger text are actually categories, it states what the conditions are and what they do about it,so basically, they'll only go through the trouble of opening and repairing anything if it's not working. Hence, "working" condition. But that doesn't mean they'll bother cleaning the inside.
This means that every single step after the third one is only done if it's actually roughed up bad enough.
The most misleading part? They state that "all" below are done, which is clearly incorrect.
They're trying so hard to look more impressive when the best console you'll get from them is one that was beaten with a sledgehammer and then might be actually repaired by them.
My source: buying a PS4 with a few smashed ports and barely read discs...but hey, it works!...kind of! ;)

I bought a few GBA games from them (1 order) and only one of them has not been clean inside (it actually did not even work until I cleaned it) so not that bad. They even answered my negative review of that game and wrote that they will see over quality and they had choice not to show that review at all, so not that bad. Prices of popular games and consoles are way too high so I wouldn't buy but I would have expected that refurbrished means cleaned before sending and in a correct way (not cleaned 5 years prior it was sold...). They had a few cheap less popular GBA titles that I couldnt find in other places so for me it was a good deal as long as these worked.
GBA games are some of the easiest games to clean , I would hope that they at the very least would clean all cartridges that come in the door .

main mission of big stores looks to me like they dont want preservation but money fast, cases and boxes thrown away from games, consoles butchered, bad repairs or no repairs at all. why not sell them as is cosmetically and stop the lies, spend the time magic erasing into cleaning inside, let the outside be as is. I just dont get why they are doing this, are employees blind not realising they making it worse or is it the company making them do this?

I use OwlTree and haven’t had any issues for the thermal pads. I use Corsair XT50 for the paste and also haven’t had any issues. I’ve done probably 50-75 PS3’s

I used to want an old BackComp Ps3. But I'm good just having a PS2 fat with PS3 component cables and an HDMI converter. Plus I've gotten used to the Super Slim Ps3. So much so, I slapped a ssd in it.
for good condition that things beat up from the feet up. Im honestly shocked that was playing cod without crashing tho and no the emotion engine heat ring is not normal but that chip can not have a delid done. and yes that was factory thermal paste.

I usually use a baby wipe and microfiber cloth for glossy stuff. I’ve seen ipa mess up glossy surfaces even worse. If you’re trying to remove scratches, then it’ll have to be polished
Novus has a good plastic polisher. I've taken swirls out with a automotive swirl remover. Low rpm speed

Console looks refurbished to me. It looks like it was taken apart and cleaned (probably just dust blown out) but they didn't get it spotless. I still say they charge too much and that controller is a problem but this one does look like some work was put into it.

"Replace thermal paste if needed" So if it doesnt turn off due to overheating in the 10 minutes they try them out they say the paste is good and leave a 20 years old console with the factory paste... In a refurbished system they should always change the paste, if a console is 6 years old like a ps4 slim it needs new thermal paste even if it doesnt overheat. That was a scam, thats not even close to good condition, i would even say its bad condition.
my dad somehow got a fat ps3 (isn’t backwards compatible sadly) for ten dollars at the swap meet!!! the guy selling it thought it was broken and was it selling it for parts, i guess they didn’t test it? but it works perfectly fine! lots of scratches and a bit dusty but it works great!

i bought one for my ps2 and was trying to play a mini game on pets cats 2( i now i have a distain for the penguin) and it just would not work i had to switch back to the og ps2 controller(which btw doesnt work as some of the buttons stopped working)

They know those controllers will not work. They are just fulfilling what they say. It did come with a controller though. Thats the loophole in there contract. It came with a controller it didn't say it had to he compatible. They have obviously been sued before. Scammers is what they are. Thats why alot of it has changed also. Rip-offs. I see more complaints about them all the time. Love you channel.

I am lucky to have a backwards compatible PS3. It's the 80 GB Metal Gear Solid 4 edition. I only play PS2 games on it. I play PS3 games using the 500 GB Superslim.
Which power supply would be the best one to use for the backward compatible PS3? I bought a 60GB PS3 from Mercari and I don't know which power supply it will have.
