In this video I build a PC for music production and show you each component I used to build it. This is a music production PC that will be perfect for any DAW including Ableton Live, FL Studio, Reaper, Cubase, and others. This is an AMD build featuring components by ASUS, NVIDIA, Noctua, Thermaltake, G.Skill, Samsung, and others. I also test this PC to show you how it performs with Ableton Live, Kontakt, GPU Audio plugins and more. GPU Audio plugins use your computers graphics processor instead of your CPU to run plugins!

as an amateur producer and ghost producer i’ve been searching for a video like this!! thank you so so much ❤
You're very welcome! This is my first build...may do another...anything you'd like to see in a future video?
@@SanjayC maybe you can buy good rated pre-build pc’s or try to make your own pc you’ve dreamed of.. maybe others have many more ideas? 💡
@@SanjayC I would love to see a build of a pure music production computer that is breaks down the impact of each component on performance and comparisons to alternatives.
Someone finally did it
I would love to see a custom built laptop for music recording and production and also able to be used for Adobe software/photoshop etc and a few day to day business tasks (emails, spreadsheets etc..Thanks ! Your video is excellent 💚
I've only made music on a PC, so this is all very familiar to me. Digging the "future-white" aesthetic. Thanks!
Thanks! I love the white with the white everything!

Wow, awesome video! Really fun. Love the white PC. Thank you, Sanjay C. Great content as always.
Long live Circuit City.
I bought some stuff from them, and also loved Tiger Direct
Use to go in there and just look around. Dont even think Ive ever purchased anything besides some wired ear buds. By the time I was an adult it was no longer
This channel is straight fire! The beats always get me hyped! 🔥❤
Yooo my two worlds collide. PC gaming and music. This is a killer machine, great build!
I started getting into music production recently without knowing what type of PC I'll need and after knowing in your video I have nearly the same specs!
Man great vid brother. I started producing on Logic when it was a Windows (EMagic) back in the day memories! And Circuit City was the place until we got Micro Center, lol 💯
These kind of videos are incredibly helpful. P.S. Digging the stash
Awesome video Sanjay! The studio looks super sleek and the white theme is so cool!!!
Even though I'm all in in the Mac ecosystem this was very cool to watch!
Thanks so much! Love your content!
@@SanjayC oh wow! I was not expecting that coming from someone at your level of success. It truly means a lot! People like you inspire creators like myself to keep going here on CZcams!
Awesome video Sanjay! We're so pleased to see our beta plugins in action. Look out for the full releases soon!
Cool thing from Noctua is they sell conversion kits to reuse your cooler in a newer gen cpu/mobo.
Had an i7 2600k with a Noctua for years and it’s now cooling a Ryzen 7, conversion kit was a bit over 20 euros. And they cool awesome, the i7 was overclocked a lot and it stayed pretty cool.
Also have a pair of Kali’s, IN8, they sound brilliant.
That setup looks awesome!!!
Now all you need to add is a white microphone,
and white LED monitor back lights
🤣 The claw machine!!! ✨😍 I love the all white aesthetics and the RGB LIGHTING! The music!woah!!! 🎉
3:49 Sheesh Circut City? IBM? Man, what a time to be alive back then. I remember those days.
Yes...you remember! There was that one commercial where that kid bought the yellow Sony walkman and needed to return it...LOL! Classic!
Loved this. I have an M1Max that’s got lots of ram and hard drive space and it’s actually really easy to overload. Not as easy as my intel mac pro from 2019, but it’s not nearly as powerful as reviewers had said. Nobody did what you did by loading plugins and VSTs we would actually use. Great demonstration. Hard for me to imagine going back to PC, but you can’t argue with the quality price ratio here. Wow.
It’s THE Tony Anderson! Hey Tony, absolutely right about price ratio. I don’t think I can beat my M1 Max…but maybe on the next PC build!
What are you running that taxes your M1 Max ? How much Ram ?
@@JDiggiti I'd like to hear Tony's reply, but as for me, my M1 Max hardly ever gets taxed much. I edit my videos on it as well, and it flies! For music production, nothing really taxes it much. I even do a lot of screen recording, while I play multiple plugins in Ableton Live, and its just fine.
Macs are cool but custom build PCs are way better my friend. It's just important that you don't cheap out on parts, buy premium and you'll be set. Windows 10 and 11 are great, not like the old days.
@@djcetra Yeah until you start getting the blue screen of death and Windows fails and then you have to reinstall everything from 0. Also, I can take an SSD with an OS and all my apps from Mac A and connect it to Mac B and be able to run everything normally. Can't do that with Windows. Apple is way better.
Looks awesome!
I am running an off-the-shelf AMD Ryzen 7 5600G PC from Micro Center. I upgraded to 32GB RAM and I think it was around $800 or so. Works fine and runs everything I can throw at it! BTW, I used to work in the computer dept at Circuit City and remember selling Packard Bells, Compaqs, and ancient Macs. I also ran a precursor of Logic called Creator on the Atari ST back in the 80s. It came on 1 floppy drive!
Thanks man, I needed this video. Very clear explanation
Anytime! Glad you liked the video.
@SanjayC I have a question if you would like to answer that?
I'm not at all good in building pc's myself and I'm there for, looking for a prebuild pc. Also I don't have that much budget space for it, because I'm also buying a monitor with it.
So do you think that a pc with the following specs is good enough for music production, lite gaming and also video and photo editing (with lite gaming I mean Minecraft and Sims 4 mainly):
-AMD Ryzen 5-6 Core
- NVIDIA Geforce RTX 4060 (8 GB memory)
-1 TB SSD
-32 GB RAM
-6 core processor (12 threads)
-CPU clock speed: 3,6 Ghz (maximum turbo boost: 4,2 Ghz)
-motherboard: AMD 320
If you have any advice, that would be awesome, before I buy it of course, it's a lot of money you know haha
Thank you in advance! Appreciate you!
Awesome video and setup ❤
I love your video. I want to ask what setup would you recommend for a good podcast?
Shoutout to Circuit City. Used to go there all the time back in the day. Love this video. As a PC DAW and gamer, this definitely is a good move in my opinion.
Thank you for sharing bro i like your video and a beautiful studio
Might be my first comment on your videos after all these years. I love the all white combos. And always love the way you deliver your speeches
This is a gem Sanjay. Thanks for coming clutch as always 😉
Although I own a MacBook Pro, I've always used custom-built PCs for music production, because of the price/performance ratio. I'm still running an i7 PC that I had built for me (I used to build my own) in 2016 for about $3400. It's still a screamer and would probably leave a similarly-priced Mac in dust. I love the simplicity of the single-vendor Mac world, but when it comes to bang for the buck, a custom-built PC has my vote.
Hey, there's no shame in having something help you with a build.
Funny @randallharp7010, I run a self built Windows machine too for music production and gaming, but I mainly and solely use a Macbook for when DJ'ing at gigs or in my home studio.
(edit: Macbook with my DJ gear of course)
@@YouriHLwhy ? Do you think you look cooler using a Mac ?
@@humanactivated1017 Absolutely not. The reason I advise a Mac is quite simple: it works better in this case than a Windows machine. That's a true fact. I wish it wasn't, because those astronomical prices Apple charges are ridiculous.
@@YouriHL well if you are correct then that's what the extra money is for
Great video! And yeah GPU Audio is a great concept. Not quite dialed in yet with many plug but on it's way. Are you running your own DAW stuff on a PC or Mac? Love your vids!!! ❤
Hey Kord...I use a Mac on a daily basis...but I'm extremely satisfied with this PC I built...very stable and fast!
Great video Sanjay C !
Great vid!
tysm someone is doing videos about buildilng pcs for music productions
Awesome video :). Behind the scene it was actually the cute dog that build the computer ;).
Another awesome ,informative video by the great Sanjay C! This guy is like the Bob Ross of music production. Yes, I'm old enough to remember Circuit City! I was sad they went out of business and still surprised Best Buy has lasted this long. Thank you this PC build video. I have been looking to get into PC building/gaming for sometime. It can be overwhelming but seems if you get the right parts for what you need, it's not that bad. A custom laptop build would be interesting.
The moment you said "Circuit City" ... wow flash back! Lol
Amazing setup Sir ! You can now do Livestreams as well with that beast 🔥. Even Gaming
That all-white look makes me think of Fairlight 2.0. Now all you need is the all-white linen suite with the bright purple tie. OH! Maybe that's the video for your next track.
For a non PC/tech channel you sprinkled a lot of nice technical tidbits in there and your desk setup looks amazing. One thing I will say is for the CPU you could probably get away with a few less threads, and an even less premium motherboard to save some cash, but man do I wish I had 64GB of ram for those orchestral sample libraries.
RAM has gotten incredibly cheap. I have 2 32GB (to total 64GB) DDR5 6000mhz DIMMS in my system I got for about $175. The only downside (which is extremely minor) is that the cast latency is a little higher than I'd like clocking in at 38ms. 6 years ago, When I got my first PC, I paid that much for only 16GB of RAM, and it was DDR4 2400mhz. Much slower than what is available today.
Nice & Thanks :)
That circuit city commercial took me back. Preciate that
Hello, thanks for sharing… Question though, what sample rate, bit depth and buffer size produced those impressive cpu loads in Live? Music CZcamsrs persistent ly seem to omit those important contextualizing numbers (without which, the presented numbers could be misinterpreted).
I bought my PC last year for A-Live, and I gotta say it’s fantastic. I have an AMD Ryzen 7 CPU and 16gb RAM and it runs perfectly. The CPU gets a tad overworked when I use specific plugin instruments, but for $1400, insanely worth it
Great video as always, Sanjay.
I built the same PC about a year ago but with the Noctua D15 (Spain is hot) and the 5900X because of the single core performance for FL Studio. I don't really know if Ableton works the same way but 5950X is also a beast for content creation.
Thanks for sharing your experience!!
Is there a reason to choose “the single core performance” for a daw? Or is that specific to FL studio?
@@onlyhalfhuman4815 Bit late, but daws tend to use one core per one track, because audio is not very easily parallelised. Of course multiple cores are useful when you have multiple tracks.
second pc build i seen on youtube using 64gb of ram here i was thinking 16 would stil do the job
Great video. I will say a 3080 will be out of most people’s budget, so if your goal is gaming and music production, don’t overlook AMD graphics. I don’t think the green tax is worth it unless you’re planning on doing video production or live steaming and you need that nvenc encoding.
I don't think u even need a good GPU... Just some cheap 680 to run interface.. What do u think?
Sanjay this was such a fun video. Hope you had as much fun buidling, gaming and testing as it seemed you did!
I did have a lot of fun. I had to read the manuals a few times but it wasn’t hard at all overall.
Nice vid. At 10:25, what did you do to your DT 770 Pro's? This a cable mod?
Cool PC! Bro, be sure to put a stand under the video card, it sags and bends the motherboard and PCI-port.
Built my first computer about 2 years ago. I will NEVER buy a PC ever again... build everytime!
Awesome!
Great timing. I have been agonizing over a new media pc since mine died last winter. All the new gpu's and power conservation concerns have had me holding off. I am going nvidia 40 series for lower power use. still sorting processors. I will also overspec the psu and still have to decide on the board chipset.
The claw machine hahahahahahaha sanjay c the c is for comedian
wow love the white !!!! Hey sanjay could you please suggest a low budget digital mixer for a small / home studio ?
Finally a pc build video for music production
Very inspirational video- well done...with great ideas and info! What computer system would be best for something like the notation software Dorico Pro 5 ( I just recently purchased Dorico Pro 5) Intel i7 or i9 or AMD Ryzen? I need to upgrade my computer and I'm not sure which system would work best? Is AMD better at music production or Intel? Any ideas?
For a while there, I thought this was the SanjayComputing channel 😊
How is the case airflow wise is it good thought about gettin it. Thanks
Sanjay looks younger now, working out?💪🏾
Keep the great videos coming!!!
that PC Set Up its only my dream, but my hobby its make a dream and share my music, thanks for PC set up info
Thank You 🙌🙌🙌🙌 Very Helpful Video 🔥🔥🔥🔥.
GPU plug-ins that’s intriguing
I'm trying linus tech tips to do this video but glad you made it !❤
Linus is great! I wanted to add the music production tests as well...so I made this. Let me know if it was helpful!
@@SanjayCits great setup with relatively reasonable price but if we need big libraries like komplete 14 and stuff we need to add a lot more storage in external storage devices. I wish you'd show that but great video and great setup 🔥🔥
I’m wondering if you are using the thunderbolt for an audio interface like a uad Apollo or any thunderbolt interface?
Dude... "El bigote" 🤦♂....🤣🤣🤣, Thanks for the content, you helped me to start doing my music!
Hey Sanjay! I’ve considered making a video like this because I challenged myself to build a music production PC and I took the risk of hoping to make a successful Intel Thunderbolt 4 system for modern Universal Audio Apollo units. And with tons of testing and tweaking I’ve got a fully working UA/Ableton rig, runs flawlessly with live streaming and gaming as well. There’s definitely some tricks to get a UA Windows system to run smoothly!
May I ask what combo of MoBo/CPU/interface/Windows you’re running? I’ve been lurking in the UAD forums as I’ve been researching a new build coming from a Win10 Intel 7700k system that’s worked with my Apollo x6 for years and years. The whole compatibility thing has had me on the fence!
@@HeinrichYoshio here ya go! After you follow all the UA instructions for windows adjustments, you’ll be good to go. Essentially what you want to make sure is your MOBO has thunderbolt headers directly built onto the board. This system is running my UA/Ableton reamping flawlessly, steaming and editing and gaming, it’s a powerhouse.

Hi Sanjay!
Nice one!!
A 5th gen Ryzen 9 and an RTX 3080 is nothing to frown upon!!!
For my next music making computer (currently have a M1 Mac Mini) I'll probably get a mini PC from Minisforum that includes the latest Ryzen 9 CGU/iGPU and may have up to 64GB DDR5 RAM and multiple m2 nvme SSDs, for much less than a m2 Mac Mini.
Thanks, Fernando! I'd love to hear how your new setup performs when you have it
Hi there, please do comment for some advise on optimum specs on a budget .
Im planning to buy a laptop or maybe a PC for :
live multitrack recording from Presonus StudioLive 32ch mixer ( 24bit/48kz, 32ch ) and cleanup in Izotope RX plus mix it later on Studio One DAW with Waves, SSL and Brainworx plugins.
live recording in studio or stage session gonna be like 1 hr session at a time at least.
# its not gonna be like a professional polished mix that i can produce and sell. its for our band personal use.
The Sony Inzone M9 would look awesome in the middle of this setup 👌
Excellent. My last build was in 2018, so I'm about due..
Thanks so much for the Super Thanks, Acee! Let me know what you decide for your build!
Careful with you 💙
Thank you ✅👍🏻
Circuit city!!! Yes!! I also remembered Media play
Would it be possible for you to run LatencyMon to check the DPC latency on your PC? Low DPC latencies are important to avoid stuttering and interruptions in the playback of video and audio. It's an issue many people have, because certain key drivers are not optimized with DPC in mind (eg. graphics, wifi) and can cause issues when playing real-time audio in the DAW, even when the CPU is not under load.
Muy pocos hablan de este problema de latencia. Conoces alguna configuracion (procesador - tarjeta madre) que funcione bien sin problrmas de latencia DPC ??
Such a helpful video. Thank you SanjayC!
You're very welcome!
The “Uncle” Sanjay mustache 💯
Kids...try this at home
One thing I've always wanted is a faraday cage for my PC. I use single coils on my guitar and it constantly picks up sounds from my PC
"...and maybe I'll do a little gaming on it, too."
Yeah, we see you. 🤣
So not only do I remember Circuit City, but also I intended Logic to be my first DAW until Emagic was bought by Apple and became a wholly subsidiary.
I need to reinstall GPU Audio’s stuff but I was very impressed with the concept. As I’ve said elsewhere, this is especially helpful for laptops as the CPUs there aren’t as powerful, making the graphic cards powerful by comparison. Thus, this can extend the working life as well as the capabilities of a laptop.
Circuit City gang! Hey Derek...you should try the new GPU Audio plugins.
@@SanjayC I’ve played around them before. They put out a different version, which meant earlier ones were no longer valid. And there might have been another update since. But no worries, this wasn’t done out of spite =]
Thats Crazy❤
I'm really happy with the build and the performance. What do you think?
I have a very similar set up to yours. Same CPU, I have the 1TB Samsung 980 Pro, and a 3080ti. The board is a an Gigabytes Aorus x570 Master. So it performs quite well. But, I noticed that Lunacy Audio’s Cube could cause some issues. Also, Arturia’s Augmented plugins could also be a bit heavy. I use Studio One.
Both Audio Cube and Augmented plugins are very heavy...I even noticed that on my Mac. I just tried a couple Augmented plugins on this new PC, and they are running very smoothly. Load time is actually faster than my Mac M1 Max.
@@SanjayC can you both please make a dpc-latency test with the programm latencymon?!
Finally sanjay has joined the pc master race!
Yes! Let's go!!
PC in my dream ❤
nice clean build! I'm just building my own now. But the 14900KS is the best CPU for music prod right now
I got a Trigkey Mini PC for 380€. Ryzen 5800h, 32GB, 1 TB M.2.
40tracks of audio, vsti's, vst's. Doesn't even blink and is silent.
GPU probably isn't great for games, but I wouldn't know.
Oh, yes, I remember Logic when it was Emagic, but furthermore I remember Notator, after Creator, when it was C-Lab...👴
One of these day I will restart my Atari ST 😉
Extremely interested in this news as I use a 4090 in my main system with a 7800X3D, which is a stunning CPU for gaming and a handful of cache heavy applications but it still falls slightly behind for multithreading as it is still only 8 cores 16 threads. Being able to leverage such an unnecessary beast of a GPU will be perfect! Thanks for the info! Great vid as always. 👍
if thats the new ryzen 7 7800x3d ur talking ab its faster than his cpu
@@MusicByNemo1I believe the 7800x3d only excels in single thread applications like gaming as opposed to multiple threads
I started using Logic when it was version 3 on a 486DXII running Windows 95
Suggest a GPU support - that’s quite a bit of sag at front of case.
Good video
I always build my own PCs for my studio and this was a genuinely sensible set of choices (OK, the 3080 is entirely overkill but hilariously good for gaming - I bet the GPU audio plugins wouldn't even make it break a sweat).
I'm a huge fan of the Ryzen CPUs. The core count you get per $ is insanely good for this sort of workhorse PC.
I'm curious about 2 pc builds i've seen - The Scan 3XS Ryzen 7700 / 7900 as they are able to be passively cooled so provide silent operation.
Put an exhaust fan in the back. Great build. 64gb of ram on a mac is grand larceny.
thank you Sanjay for this one helps me as i use ableton (its heavy), i use my daw in a windows laptop due to budget, could you suggest me a budget gaming cpu for ableton ? Thanks & peace to you
I'm happy with the Ryzen 9 I put into this, but the Ryzen 7 should be really good for music production too.
Surprised you didn't go current gen. I went with an Asus X670-E board, AMD 7900 CPU, 4TB Gen 5 M.2 SSDs, and 4070 Ti. A very nice upgrade from my old i9 9900K build from 2018.
For how much in total? I have I9 and considering an update soon
for your Ableton benchmark you should have showed us the audio settings. Specifically Audio Rate and Buffer Size. Bigger buffer size means lower CPU usage. By default Ableton's buffer size is 512. Bring that down to 32 and rerun the benchmark. Now, if you stay only in the box you don't really care that much but if you throw some live instruments coupled with VSTs you want a low buffer. So how about you rerun your tests with the lowest buffer size your sound card supports and let us know how the PC is doing? My hunch is that you won't get past 30 tracks. Heck, even 20 will be much once you load a few instances of Omnisphere or Diva.
straight from 2023
You look alike Salman Khan from Dabang ‼️
Moustache power sheesh
Please do a video on storing vsts and plug-ins in an external drive.
Love how the white case blends in well with the studio. Amazing build.
Quick question, why did you choose AMD over intel CPU? Just curious.
I wanted to get the build at a reasonable price to test the performance. I want to do a high spec build soon too. Any suggestions for components?
@@SanjayCThat's cool, those 16 cores should be enough for intense projects too. I hear the i7 13700k provides great value at a lower price too. But if you are going high spec then maybe the i9 12900k or 13900k. You could also try DDR5 memory just to see the performance difference. It would also be cool to sit the gpu vertically.
"Welcome to Circuit City: where service is state of the art." I think they also had one of the earliest examples of price matching as a policy that I ever saw.
GPU plug ins should work very well. A GPU can take the strain off the CPU and the calculations should be easy for modern cards. This looks cool.
fml im just thinking to switch to an internal SSD with my budget to get some more cpu out of it and this guy is buildin his computer xD
My friend worked at circuit city and I remember going for pc parts and random peripherals 😂
Helpfull video❤
So happy to hear that! What do you think I could improve in this build?
@@SanjayC no it's much better 😁
