In this video, I show you how to build a home music studio for under $300. I show you each piece of gear and software you’ll need including a computer, audio interface, headphones, monitors (speakers), keyboard, and microphone. I also show you how these things work together. In addition to this, I’ll tell you which piece of gear made the biggest impact to my home studio setup. If you’re in trying to setup a home studio for yourself, you don’t need a lot to start producing music. A home music studio these days is very inexpensive and the results are excellent. If you’re interested in learning more about my setup, please check out the other videos on my channel.

I bought a midi keyboard. (Novation impulse 49) and it definitely helps spark creativity by making it easier to just play around with the keys on a scale or when coming up with different chords. If you have some extra cash then i'd also recommend buying some different plugins for the type of music you want to create. I use Hybrid 3, vacuum pro, and I recently bought synthmaster one and it comes with a lot of different presets you can choose from. I stay away from Nexus as it doesnt give you much options for tweaking your sounds.

I started producing on my iPad with Garageband like almost every other musician did but never really got anywhere. I've recently moved up to LMMS and am now saving up for FL Studio.
    My take?
Invest in DAW/s, Studio monitors and a microphone. Those 3 devices are the only ones that can't be subsituted. Built-in speakers aren't so efficient in sound-imaging, microphone quality is definetly a must and DAWs are the most important aspects of music production. A guy could have a Rode NT-1A, Abyss Diana V2 and M-Audio 61 Key, but his DAW as a web browser one. DAW is key.

I'd recommend open-back headphones (ex. DT990, DT770 are closed-back) for mixing/critical listening. They are a lot more comfortable for extended periods of listening and have a more linear frequency response in my opinion. If you're recording with a sensitive mic and need to avoid headphone bleed, that's another story of course. Also wanted to add that if your stereo imaging and detail are that much better on headphones, it could be that your monitors are not properly set up. I always thought I had crappy to mediocre speakers until I really perfected the distance, angle and height (equilateral triangle). It made a huge difference!

For any aspiring producer: try to use what you already have. So PC or MacBook, your regular headphones etc. If you want an affordable DAW, most manufacturers sell intro versions with a lot of options. Like Image Line FL Studio for about $70, Steinberg Cubase for roughly $70, Ableton Live 10 Intro $70 etc. All these DAW’s have a free try out version so you can decide for yourself with which software you want to start. There’s no such thing as ‘the best’ DAW. It’s subjective. Small tip: if you have friends who also produce music, buy the same DAW they use. Comes handy when you’re working together. Have fun making music you all!

3.recording end editing software (You can get DAW but you can also get Audacity and do everything in that)
4.any midi sequencer and some vsts (you need sequencer to make sequences that you directly record to audacity)
5.Hardware synths and other real instruments (software ones are good for a short time but the hardware ones are always great)

Negl, as soon as he asked what the biggest difference was caused by, I immediately told myself "headphones". When I'd first started I was super caught up with other producers telling me about how important they were, and tbh I couldn't afford any so I was a little bummed. Eventually by the time I was ready to invest, I'd already tested studio headphones/vs monitors for myself and I was a new man. Just the mere fact that the sound itself is RIGHT MEXT to your ears made a huge difference for me, moreso than even the brand or price (I'm referring strictly to studio grade phones here, obviously consumer headphones aren't even a consideration). I felt a huge difference and eventually decided to leave the monitors until I build a dedicated studio.

I gotta say this man is spitting facts about beyerdynamic headphones for mixing. As a producer who's been around a while, I've used beyerdynamic the most and they are fantastic. Only thing I would say is to get the low impedance version of whichever headphone you get from them. The high impedance versions(600 ohms) are a bit too hard to drive for most audio interfaces, especially Scarlett. You'll be turning up the volume to 100% and wishing you had a 110% knob.

I started with garageband and skull candy earbuds. You don't need much for hip hop or edm beats. I gradually built up my gear to logic pro x, headphones, and speakers. Plug-ins will get you far also. Now I am looking for a midi keyboard and a microphone. But i would suggest getting to know your DAW as much as possible before buying hardware.

  • @earlsfield
    @earlsfield Před 4 lety

Here is a good exercise. I am professional audio engineer and music producer, working on music, sound design and video games. I recently moved to another country and was planning to move my studio gear with me gradually. Alas, due to the pandemic, there is no way I can do that now. I managed to bring two main computers with me, AKG C 414, NI Machine and Korg nano Midi controller. Also brought my Beyerdynamic DT 770 with me. So i need everything else. To start, I am connecting my audio to Zoom 6, portable recorder with 6 mic inputs. This is a decent on the fly audio interface. I am mostly focused to electronic music/synths, so hardware synths go into analogue Allen and Heath Mixer, from which i bounce independent stereo or mono mixes into DAW (via Zoom inputs). The only downside to this is not being able to get multiple outputs from analogue machines, but i don't have too many, i have like 6 hardware synths, that can easily be bounced once programmed. Now last piece of the puzzle were monitors - i did not want to spend too much on these when I do not have acoustically treated space here jet. So pair of Adam and pair of Yamaha and that's pretty much it. So all in all, i would say you can set up versatile deck of gear cheaper than ever - if you have main machine and software, that is. Audio interface - 150 (Dollars, Euros, Pounds), decent mic - 100 - 300 (although there are some crazy cheap condensers you would not believe the quality - good for the buck), analogue mixer (not mandatory) - 300, speakers - 300-400-500. Add some controllers to this, like ones Sanjay is mentioning, or even more portable ones, for 100, 200. basically, you can have decent setup for 1k to start with.

    Hey Sanjay really great video!
When i got started with making music i bought way too much gear when i really didnt need it.
People kept telling me that it is mandatory that u have a good set of stuido monitors so i bought some Behringer Truth 2031a, which kinda was a waste of money since my room is really small and i cant position my work station properly to get the most out of them.
So i kept using my Bayer DT-990s Pro anyway since i already had them.
The only thing i would really recommend is a good DAC with an built in Headphone amp like the FiiO E10 to get the most out of your headphones.

But that is using an external interface that takes a lot of the latency away. Running multiple plugins is where you need the better CPU and more RAM plus the SSD drive and external USB 3.0 hubs and drives also a must.
