      Don't be fooled. Watch the video again at the balloon's highest altitude before it bursts. Do you see any oceans? No you don't. It's the fish-eye lens of the camera causing the view to be distorted and appear as though the horizon is curved. That is what GoPros do. Look at what you perceive to be "curvature" and realize that the earth is NOT that small. You don't see any lakes and no oceans. Then go CZcams the term "Red Bull Space Jump" and you'll see the same thing. It's the fish-eye lens causing the appearance of curvature, but not a single lake, no ocean, but ONLY dessert in sight. Curvature has yet to be observed or measured in real life.

      NineInch Nails so facts and science are foolish? 360° divided by 24 = 15° the sun's path travels 15° per hour, giving us the 24hr cycle. I've also seen both the sun, and moon in the sky at the same time so there's that.

    As much as I appreciate the mountains turning blue... having flown jets at 47000 feet over California... in the extreme rare chance of us getting close enough to this experiment and sucking it through an engine... that would really suck. In the Lear 31 we need both engines to provide pressurization at that altitude. If we lost one we would lose useful consciousness in all of about 10 seconds at that altitude. Coordinate with local authorities to launch high altitude balloons

      @gnoam7050 Před 8 lety +1

      +Джейсон Хичкок That's what I was thinking too: it would be the suns radiation on the mercury. Need a definitive answer.

    • @deathgliger
      @deathgliger Před 8 lety +5

      +gnoam Objects at higher altitudes are exposed to increasing amounts of Infrared emitting from the sun, because the Atmosphere becomes significantly thinner and thus provides less shielding from high energy Electromagnetic waveforms than those at sea level. Astronauts face the same extremes of temperature during their EVA missions, as soon as they move into the Earth's shadow, it is possible to experience temperature changes in excess of 200 degrees Kelvin. Combine this with the fact that warm gases expand to occupy larger spaces in lower pressure environments and that energy differentials move naturally towards higher entropy (thus creating a cooling effect as the energy that was once contained in, let's say, a Coors can sized space has now distributed more evenly over several square meters of open air) and you get such temperature changes.
      In short, The Coors Can sized space loses energy to heat transfer in the atmosphere, and once the atmosphere thins significantly enough, the sun's radiation heats it back up :D.

      +FreeFlamingInfinite Atleast capitalized the country's name if you want to sound intelligent. It looks like this United States of America. Oh yea, you are supposed to use a comma after you typed "Well". But look you still screwed your comment up by editing your own comment. This is how you need to disrespect someone and look intelligent. Unlike, you who comes on CZcams and "tries" to shit talk someone. When all the person was trying to was leave a comment letting you know what Metric System he/she uses.

    • @freeflaminginfinite917
      @freeflaminginfinite917 Před 8 lety

      Clever Pup Gaming Firstly, correcting gramma is a rather desperate attempt, my friend, and can be done by all. For example, you should NOT have had a comma after "Unlike", as it is absolutely unnecessary.
      Secondly, nobody is trying "to sound intelligent" on CZcams, as that would be an exercise in futility with the overwhelming number of complete idiots making comments.
      Thirdly, don't get so worked up buddy. It's just the court of public opinion. Nothing means anything here.
      P.S. The non-capitalisation of your country's initialism was deliberate, I apologise, though the English language being spelled in "American" is somewhat of a global joke, not your fault.

    I just want to point this out. That bottle wasn't actually in space. It was only in the stratosphere which is around 90,000 or 100,000 ft (20 miles above earth). Space begins at around 300,000 ft. The stratosphere may be close to space but it's not really space. You would have to be at a higher altitude to be in space. The title should be something like "Bottle In The Stratosphere" it shouldn't be "Bottle In Space" because that's not really space.

    Cool video. Great experiment. Great views!
    I looked at radiosonde data on that day, at Miramar Naval Air Station. It is NEVER above zero anywhere in the stratosphere. It was -74 at the top of the troposphere, and the warming started. It only warmed up to -39 degrees C at 107,000 feet when the weather balloon popped.
    The temperature data was still accurate at 40k ft on the rise, but started showing incorrectly above that until it crashed. I surmise this was due to the can turning completely to ice during the flight. When it was super cold the 'warm' can at 32 deg ice made it appear warmer than it was, and then even when the temperature rose to above 32 on descent the frozen can lowered the temperature on the thermometer.

      strange happenings I wondered this myself, until I looked up some data on aluminum beverage cans. Apparently cans can withstand pressure differentials of up to six times atmospheric pressure without exploding. So as long as the beer was packaged below 5 atm -- FWIW, it looks like many canned beverages are packaged at 2 or 3 atm from what I found on Google -- the additional 0.999 atm pressure differential encountered at 93k feet wouldn't harm the can. (Yes, there is a tiny bit of air up there, but about one-thousandth of sea level pressure.)
