    Hi guys, welcome back to another this vs that! Today I am comparing the swiffer wet jet mop and the O-Cedar bucket spin mop. Both the Swiffer and the Ocedar spin mop are very popular products to clean floors. I wanted to compare and see which product and method did a better job of doing a deep clean in term of which one would kill more germs?
    I used an agar test kit that I purchased from amazon. I swabbed the floor area first and then divided the floor into two sections. One section was for the Swiffer mop and the second was for the O-Cedar spin bucket mop. I then proceeded to clean the areas, let them dry and then swabbed both areas again. After five days of growth, I was able to analyze the growth of bacteria from the Swiffer as well as the O-Cedar Spin Mop. The results definitely blew me away in terms of which one cleaned my floors better and which one killed more germs.
    For my second attempt, I cleaned the O-Cedar mop head with bleach, cleaned the bucket with bleach and also added bleach to the mop water and repeated the experiment. I definitely got better results with the Ocedar Spin mop using this method.
    I hope you find this video interesting and entertaining.

    I think the results might have something to do with the cleaner you used in the spin mop. Swifter mopping liquid is made to kill germs versus the orange oil you used in the spin mop which is made solely to CLEAN not sanitize or disinfectant hence why it didn’t kill any germs. I bet with an actual disinfecting liquid in the spin mop it would have performed significantly better. Like with a product that is labeled as a disinfectant. As most store bought bleach products don’t don’t actually say they disinfectant. It’s clothing grade no splash bleach which is different.

      I've been binge watching cleaning videos, I've learned that cleaning and disinfecting/sanitizing is not a one step process it's a 3 step:
      Clean wash
      Rinse
      Sanitize
      It's possible to get a mix of all 3 but not desirable, definitely not with a mop.

    You need to use a negative control in your experiments. Take a sample of the surfaces of your mop heads to see what organisms are already on the mop. Also, the same cleaner at the same concentration needs to be tested on each mop or else you’re not testing the mop itself, you’re testing the cleaning agent. Finally, please stop waving the Petri dishes around with out the lid. You’re growing pure mold, fungus, and bacteria. If any of those are infectious, you can breathe in aerosolized material and get pretty sick.

    Great comparison job. One flaw that I see is that the swiffer is using a “chemical mix”. Great moo but I hate how strong the swifter cleaner odor is.
    If you DIY-replace the Swiffer solution to be the same as the Spinner Mop, it would be a better comparison.

  • @kathleenmccann7481
    @kathleenmccann7481 Před 3 lety +16

    Cleaning is different from sanitizing and killing germs. I believe that the generous amount of chemical spray from the Swiffer would kill lots of germs even if the floor was not wiped up. For my money and effort I believe that a mop and bucket takes up more dirt and grime. The Swiffer smears stuff around and sprays a lot of chemicals.

    Thanks again!👍

  • @yovib
    @yovib Před 3 lety +30

    It always made sense to me. A swifter wet mop is using a fresh clean pad each time that's clean, I can also see it's picking up dirt, dust and hair (I make my own antibac solution/cleaner for it) vs. a cloth mop that I've always felt is just pushing stuff around more rather than picking it up. Not to mention, you need an antibacterial solution of some kind to not only clean, but help kill the germs. Plus the mop has to be sanitized with bleach after using, along with bucket. Add to that how many times you need to change the water while cleaning or you'll just be putting dirt back on the floor. Too much work and effort when the swifter can do the same job faster, easier, with less prep and cleanup after.

    • @Catsface99
      @Catsface99 Před 2 lety +5

      OMG don't you sweep or vacuum before you mop?? I don't have all that debris on my floor because I sweep and/or vacuum before I mop. Swiffer can't hold a candle to the Mopnado! Mopnado spin mop and Tilex make my floors spotless. The grout is so bright and clean. Take a wet paper towel and wipe your floor after using a Swiffer pad to see if you still have dirty floors.

    yea when you clean a small area with a brand new pad it will pick up more dirt/bacteria BUT clean the entire floor with the swiffer and I bet the results are different because once the "disposable" pad becomes soiled then you really are just pushing dirt around.

    Please test spot bleach in a covered area before applying everywhere. I'm thinking it may damage some flooring... Same for other cleaners and over time vinegar may as well especially real hard wood flooring. I love my swiffer for hardwood floors but just tried the O-ceder yesterday for the first time. I wasn't impressed. But will keep it for mopping under the beds and behind the toilet etc. The O-ceder was hard to use. The mop head needed more material. The plastic scratches the floor. I had to stay on top of it and move slowly and change the water several times. Also, I would definitely have to throw the head of it in the wash after every use and disinfect the bucket.

    To cut cost drastically. But reusable swifer pads. You can make your own solution, I use Lysol liquid and pine sol. To get the bottle open, heat it with boiling water, use a rag to twist it off and then use a scissors to cut out the little notches. I haven’t spent a dollar on my swifer in years and the pads are washable.

I regretted spending quite a lot of money stocking up on them, so I could exchange a dirty one for a clean during cleaning, without having to stop. Seems now it wasn't such a bad idea after all..🙄. The Swiffer also uses a bunch of chemicals to sterilize the floor. Pretty obvious it'll get less bacterial growth.

    As a medical technologist i appreciate the use of petri dishes and bacterial growth 😅. The bacteria on there looks like normal environmental bacteria. Really fun research tho 👍🏻 swiffer jet it is !

      It is not "bacteria" Mr. Medical Technologist. It is fungus. I can even tell what kind of fungus it is, just by looking at it. I hope you are not the one running tests in the Lab your work.

      @@mario9133 MIss Mario, since you misgendered me. There are spore formers that also grow like that on petry dishes. Since you know too, you should know that. I have experience with enviromental bacteria aswell.. It could be fungus because they are in the inviroment too. So what kind of fungus is it? since you can tell. Now im intested and invested in your answer.

    Re the environment...the cleaning solution you use with the spin mop is far harder on the environment than the pads for the swifter. And it is possible to recycle the pads.

    They said you should get a extra bucket ontop of the bucket and put the water in there and then ring out in the original bucket

      It doesn’t really matter though because you have to factor in the average person is not properly washing and disinfecting their mop head before usage. Even with a second bucket you’re still cross contaminating to a degree and the mop heads hold a lot of dirt and bacteria.

    I don’t think this is a fair comparison. The cleaner solution you used are different. It would be better if you used the same solution for each spot. Your dilution formula could be different from the amount of cleaner used in the direct spray of swiffer too.

    Using bleach or abrasive solutions on the microfiber ruins the fiber's ability to pick up bacteria. So that could be the issue too in the test.

      Renata Cunha I usually do a weekly laundry load with mop heads, rags, and cloth attachments from my vacuum. So I load up the laundry as usual with some detergent and also add bleach to the load. It helps to disinfect and deodorize everything. Thanks for watching!

    I guess cause the bucket keeps all the dirty water and bacteria so they spread 😅 that's why I always put bleach in the backet and I clean everything with bleach....unfortunate

    Picking up dirt and grime is different from killing germs. We all want to kill those germs but I think that the generous spray of chemicals from that Swiffer would kills germ even if the floor wasn't wiped up. For my money and effort I believe that a mop and bucket picks up more dirt and grime for general cleaning.

      I know! It all comes down to the fact that the swiffer pads are disposable and don’t hold germs. But washing the mop head in bleach and washing with a bit of bleach solves that issue!

    I use Tilex always when I clean my tile floors with my Mopnado spin mop and it works marvelously. I don't like Swiffer anymore because they changed the mop itself and they aren't very strong also the mop pad comes off while mopping. Swiffer used to be a much better product. I think Swiffer just moves the dirt around on the floor because you don't rinse off the dirt as you clean. I used to use several Swiffer pads to mop my kitchen floor. Personally, my tile and grout look much cleaner now that I use the Mopnado and Tilex.

      Because if you think about it, all you’re doing with the spin mop is picking up dirt, swishing it in water and putting it back on the floor.
      Nice to see an actual experiment to prove the theories, great job 👏🏻

    Bucket mop just moves the direct around, no matter how many times u mop ur moving the dirt over and over. I LITERALLY Went running for a swiffer. As far as debris dust first with a swiffer duster sheet then mop. I was raised mopping but I had to part ways.
