I'm a woman and know more about men's sports than my husband and the only female basketball player I know is the one in the news every day now! Sorry but he's absolutely correct.

The only female athletes I know are boxers and MMA types and that's only because I'm a dude who is a martial artist and I use those elite level female fighters as inspirations for women I teach while also cautioning them that "these women are professional fighters and fighting is their entire lives and even then they're fighting other women. Sure, they can handle most rando men on the street who know what they're doing and they're proof that women can be fighters too, but don't lose sight of reality here". For example: Amanda Nunes or Ronda Rousey isn't beating Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson who is a 5'3" 125 lb man who is considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of all time.
Asses in seats, eyes on screens, and merchandise sales pay the players salaries. If the leagues/teams/players aren’t competitive in the broader market, then the leagues/teams/players *will not* earn competitively.

Wife and I live in Chicago. The Sky went to and won the championship last year. I watched the whole series just to show support for my city's team. My wife "watched" it....by having her face buried in her phone or book every second of every game and she'd occasionally throw out a very half-hearted woo. The sad thing is she can actually name several of the worlds top female athletes and knows things about them because she's supportive of women in every way she can be. But, she just hates sports and won't actually watch them with one caveat....college football, a male sport.

Women's NCAA basketball is better than WNBA I think. Most top female college players do not go pro and don't want to, which throttles the talent pool in the WNBA.
Here's a sad but true fact. My job took me all over the u.s.. spent time in almost every major city in the nation and 40 states.. and inhale NEVER once seen someone in a wnba Jersey. Not once. Not even a t shirt. Sadly.. women's sports are a cash suck. If they even paid the wnba players half a.milkion a piece.. the entire league would go bankrupt and shut down in 1 year. It always loses money. The owners are basically doing charity work.

I got a free ticket to a WNBA game in Vegas.
Kid Cudi was performing afterwards, so I went by myself. It was cool to see Bill Laimbeer coaching even though he seemed drunk.
I sat through brick after brick in a low scoring game.
Nobody else really showed up until the 4th quarter. And then they announced Kid Cudi had to cancel. So after the game they showed Thursday Night Football on the screen. And I sat in an empty arena with about 500 people, watching football with the lights on until they kicked us out.
That was my WNBA experience.
