  • Westbound video shot from my 1988 Mercury Cougar on Texas U.S. 66 through Shamrock, TX. Recorded on June 9, 1994. Note all the abandoned businesses, particularly former service stations. The by-passing of Interstate 40, like many towns passed by interstate highways, had the most to do with many of these establishments "biting the dust." Also, note the Whiting Bros. overhead highway sign on the left when first coming into Shamrock. Whiting Brothers was an independent fuel company that had a fair amount of their gas stations and even motels located along Route 66 from California to Oklahoma. Most where gone by the early 1990's, though one sort of "hangs on" in Moriarty, New Mexico. Wish I had taken interior shots of the famous and iconic FINA (originally Conoco) tower gas station and U-Drop Inn restaurant as I had lunch there which was a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of chili. Anyway, thanks for watching and Happy Motoring!

I love stuff like this! We can't go back to 1994, and this shows the remnants of Route 66 after it's heyday. Really great footage!
