    Over the life of a vehicle, the transmission can often be overlooked when performing routine maintenance. If left unserviced, the automatic transmission fluid will break down, causing the valve body and filter to become contaminated with deposits and sludge. This will lead to poor shifting, slipping, and ultimately transmission replacement.

    Best video I ever seen for this procedure. Two things I would add 1) The screw for the filter is T30 although the T27 bit could work. And 2) the red fluid from redline, valvoline, Castrol etc may meet the specs to what was in it originally but not exactly the same wrt density, viscosity, SG etc; the better choice would be the pentosin/Fuchs ATF 1 or Febi or the original ZF lifeguard 5.

The 2001 model has an e46 3.20d vehicle with 100kW (136). when the car is on the first launch and every time you press the accelerator pedal, it takes off with 4 seconds delay. the revolving clock is moving, meanwhile accelerating after 2 thousand cycles. Hello. I have an E34 with a 5HP18, which recently lost all drivetrain power. I stopped driving for a bit and when I put it in D nothing happened, except for the engine revving, but with no movement. The same goes for all of the other gears. R, 4,3, and so on. The wheels on the other hand lock, when the trans is in P, and move freely in N. Worth mentioning, is that before all of this happened the gear selector was really hard to engage. It was resisting a lot and struggled to go into gear. I checked the oil level in the trans today and the wire that goes from the gear selector to the trans and they were both fine. The car has also been sitting for about 2 years outside without being moved. What do you think is the problem?

    I'm thinking about doing this soon on my 91 525i. This may be a dumb question, but after refilling the fluid until it drains out of the fill hole do you replace the fill plug before starting the engine and running the transmission through the gears? My transmission is acting a bit funny and when it does the gear indicator light in the dash is unlit. jiggling the shift lever a bit turns it back on and it works fine for a while so i'm going to look at it and clean or replace.

  • @Sharpshooter44024
    @Sharpshooter44024 Před 9 lety

    The actual BMW procedure would lead you to believe that the transmission temp. of the fluid at the time of applying the fill plug is most important. I say no. The transmission being level has more of an impact than the expansion of the fluid at the proper temp. Case in point. The transmission of my X3 sits at a 5 degree angle when the SUV itself is level. Doing the math, this will change you fluid level far more than the temperature. So it is important to both have the transmission level and the proper temperature of the fluid. In my case I chose 40 C ( 30c-50C). I drained 4.5 liters of used fluid black and filled with 6 liters of Redline D6. The X3 had only 66,000 miles and operated smoothly. The fluid change was a proactive move on my part

    • @schl0tte
      @schl0tte Před 9 lety

      Sharpshooter44024 When driving uphill/downhill or accelerat/brake neither the pan nor the fluid level will ever be level ;)
      The whole thing is merely about overfill/underfill so the fluid will not come out from the top vent when boiling hot or the pump will suck air when in highly dynamic moves.

    • @JK-br9lh
      @JK-br9lh Před 9 lety

      Imothep I was really concerned about not adding too much. I drained 4.5 liters and added 6 liters the exact way shown in the video. It seemed like a huger difference to me. It seems logical that the transmission level is the way to go prior to filling since my transmission goes into multiple different vehicles with each vehicle possibly having a different transmission angle. Once I have the proper amount of fluid volume I assume that the transmission design will account for the transmission level movement during a variety of maneuvers of the vehicle.
      What happens if you add too much fluid ? Does if spill out of an over flow valve or blow out a seal ?

    • @ThisIsTheWarRoom
      @ThisIsTheWarRoom Před 8 lety

      +Sharpshooter44024  Sharpshooter, your detailed explanation makes sense to me. But ECS's instructions are contradictory. The written version says to make vehicle level. Video says to make transmission level (using pan lip edge). Those are very different things.
      With my 2002 BMW 530i, the transmission pan is level when the rear wheels are up on car ramps (9" off ground!)and front wheels on ground. That's a very steep front downward angle on vehicle. But you never see the vehicle in other videos at that kind of downward angle when they are checking fluid level. I haven't seen one in a shop at such an angle either. The vehicle always appears level on lift.
      I actually called ZF North American today to try to resolve this. The ZF tech was adamant to make vehicle level, not transmission. (ZF's written guidelines also say make vehicle level.)
      Because of this confusion, and before draining anything, I did a little test on my 530i. I leveled the vehicle, brought transmission to 30+ deg C, and opened fill plug, not drain plug. Almost 1/4 - 1/2 a liter of fluid came out! This suggests to me it was filled with transmission leveled (i.e. fluid more angled toward front of transmission away from fill plug, allowing more fluid in). Not with vehicle leveled, which runs more fluid toward back of pan, limiting amount you can pump in.
      Finally, a very good point you make. The same transmission is at different angles in different vehicles! So that suggests you level transmission, not vehicle.
      Those Germans seem more precise than this! I can't believe there is this kind of confusion. I was tempted to get my German friend to call ZF in Germany to go straight to the top!
      HELPPPPPPP! I can't afford a new ZF5hp19!!!!!!!!!

      @faseonepk2002 Před 7 lety

      Josh P the fluid that the particular transmission shown in this video "zf 5hp19" is similar in color to motor oil. I have done a lot of research prior to rebuilding mine. I bought Pentosin atf+1, they recommend zf lifeguard 5 fluid which is pretty much the same. I just wanted to use what the manufacturer recommended rather than experiment with other fluids like the red stuff in the video. not saying it isn't the right stuff.

  • @Thewestcoastshooter
    @Thewestcoastshooter Před 7 lety

    What about the fluid in the cooler and cooling lines?

    • @faseonepk2002
      @faseonepk2002 Před 7 lety +5

      Thewestcoastshooter the only way to completely change the fluid is to flush the system with the car running. That would need to be done at the dealer or an aftermarket shop with the proper equipment. This video just outlines a basic filter change. The trans holds 9.8 liters total and I'd say only 5 liters are drained in this procedure. That's only half. if you run the car and drain it again the fluid will be black again in less than a few minutes.
      If you want to do a more thorough fluid change you can disconnect the trans cooler lines and run a can of transmission cooler cleaner through the lines to remove the old fluid and clean them up. I used Kooler kleen by Dr. Tranny Amazon or Napa has this. Then if you really want to get another 2-3 more liters of fluid out of the transmission you can un bolt the valvebody. That will allow half of the fluid inside of the torque converter to drain. I bought three 5 liter jugs of pentosin atf+1 off ebay for $57 dollars each for rebuilding my transmission and it was enough.
      hope this helps.
      p.s. this advice only applies to the zf5hp19 transmission shown in the video. A GM transmission can also be found in e39 bmws...I don't know anything about those.

    Hello! I have a 2000 BMW 528i with a Steptronic automatic tranny. The car has 197,000 miles on it and I've found no evidence of any transmission service for it. The car still shifts fine, but many techs are telling me that since its this old with no service on it that its living off borrowed time. They also tell me to leave the transmission alone as changing the fluid at this point would damage it further since new fluid would remove the gunk that's keeping it together. In short, they tell me to just let it die. Can I have your opinion on this?
