Great video, helped me out a lot. Please keep up the excellent work. Just finished xmsn oil and filter change on our '06 e46 330Ci. My comments as a first-timer with the GM 5L-40e Xsmn. (1) If the orange gasket on the neck of the old filter remains in the transmission, note there are two independent steel bands embedded in the rubber gasket material that are pressing the gasket in place. (2) Different filter for "Deep pan" vs "shallow pan". Old filter is the key to know which you have. If white spacer on neck of old filter, then you have a deep oil pan. Also, the two standoffs are taller on the deep oil pan's filter. (3) Drained old fluid, measured it at 241 fluid ounces. Filled using procedure outlined in the video. Only took 218 fluid ounces of Valv MaxLife before it started running out the fill hole. The old fluid was likely the original factory fill (currently 62k miles on car, bought it in '08 with 15k miles). To correct this difference, I adjusted the jack-stands to tilt the car so the fill plug was now at the high end of the xmsn. Started the car and added the remaining 23 fluid ounces to get amount of new oil put in equal to amount of old oil drained out. Hope these notes help other first-timers.

Thanks 50sKid for providing all the info and tips to change the fluid and filter in my much overdue 2004 BMW X3 with 171,000 mi. I didn't drop the pan on removal but I managed nock over the second bottle when topping off with motor running. All good now and transmission shifts like new again. Keep up the good work!

I'm such a believer of not using rtv on the transmission pan but on a 4L30E, I had no alternative. I had a leak that I could not seal. I replaced two gaskets, including a genuine BMW and still had a leak with the bigger of the two pans. I threw in the towel and used rtv designed specifically for my situation. It's been bone dry for six months and the car runs great. To this day, I still can't figure out why I could not get it to seal....perhaps it was a warped pan, or some old gasket material stuck that I could not scrape off and could not see with the naked eye. Thanks for the video.

Thx for this video! I just did this on my gfs 2006 with the GM 5speed. To clarify a few things. I put a little over 3 quarts initially before it started spilling out. Started it up and was able to add another 2.5 quarts with it running. I'm not sure I would bother with dropping the pan and replacing the filter if I had to do it again.

The fluid needs to be between 30C and 50C to get the right level. The quick easy way to fill it is to get a long hose, stick a funnel in it, and hang it from the mirror or window opening so you can pour the fluid in. Once it's filled cold leave the plug out 'till the fluid hits at least 30C, if the fluid is colder than that it'll be overfilled.

Good Afternoon, My son has a 2004 330xi with what I believe is the GM A5S 390R Automatic Transmission. The vehicle has approximately 175,000 Miles on it and to the best of our knowledge has never had the transmission fluid or filter changed (this has been on our to-do-list for several months but we first had to deal with a head gasket). I am preparing to do this when he comes home for thanksgiving.
    Data:
    1) The car has developed a pulsation/chatter when accelerating through 1st gear that lasts 1-3 seconds and stops before 3000 RPM.
    2) The car also has a vibration while stopped with the vehicle in gear.
Your video on the ZF transmission pressure regulator custom modification makes a lot of sense to me and I am wondering if there is a similar custom modification available for the GM transmission?
I am also wondering if I should be changing the 1-2 Solenoid while I have the pan down?
I have been looking for more information on the BMW GM transmissions but most of the DIY info covers the ZF transmission.

Hey I hope you don't mind answering a few questions. I have a 1999 BMW e46 323i. I recently put a new engine in it because the previous one had high mileage and headgasket problem. Before that the car drove just fine. The transmission shifted no problem. Anyway , now with the new engine it starts and runs ok. However, when you go to put it in drive or reverse nothing happens. never changed the fluid, I did however top the fluid once the car wasn't moving and it made no difference. It may be an electrical probable? Everything is hooked up right far as I know. Also, maybe a computer reset will get rid of this problem? Need the car Asap! I might add, I'm in Canada and it's also -10 celcious and above.
One another note. I raised the car of the wheels and put it in drive and even at high rpms the wheels didn't turn most than a a full turn at 4k rpm or higher.

  • @brokenmotorwagen1328
    @brokenmotorwagen1328 Před 6 lety

One thing to keep in mind, the transmission breaths. With daily heat cycles, the air heating up and cooling dow, the outside moisture and dust will make it's way in over the years. With all that contamination and the heat, that fluid will start to turn into crap after 4-5 years.

Loved your video and now I’m ordering the parts to drain and fill the transmission in my 04 BMW X3. I have 200,000 miles and recently I’m noticing some minor shifting problems. My transmission is the GM model 5L40 E which lists dexron 3. One video highly recommended using a LubeGuard as additional lubricant. What’s your opinion? I found Valvoline Dex/Merc as a possible. Should I buy 2 gallons or 3? Thank you for teaching us how to do the work on our own.

    Hi 50skid
I watch your video's and it has helped me in my repairs on my 2004 BMW 320i E46 and Ithank you for that. I have a question for you as I have a hard time find a fix for the problem I am having.
My car has started going into safe mode (Limp Mode). Before it does between 1st and 4th shift is ok then in between 60 km and 70 km before the 5th gear the car RPM's go up like an over rev as if I am in neutral and I get a band sometimes low sound and sometimes hard hit (feels like it under me) then safe mode. The KM I gave you could very like 50 km to 60 km it happens. Once in a while, if I stop for gas and try to drive away the car will not go into gear the shifter will move up and down but nothing, I will need to sit for 10 min and then it is fine this happens while I am in safe mode. I have checked the drive shaft center barring and the Flex Plate looks good. The drive shaft itself has threadsshowing just after the center bearing heading to the back. Not sure if the threads are supposed to be showing. Had the Transmission level check and was fine. I have replaced the Camshaft sensor and that helped for a bit as long as I did not go over 60 km. I have also read that the neutralsafety switch can cause the same issues Iam having but can not find how to replace or were to find location. I have also read changing the transmission fluid will work.
I hope you can help or lead me in a direction that can help.
    Thanks
    Rob

My GM5L40E is gushing fluid out the breather intermittently. I've changed the fluid and filter a few times, but I think there is a seal that has disintegrated inside the transmission and is blocking fluid and sending it out the breather. Could you possibly do a rebuild of one of these BMW-GM5L40E transmissions? The rest of my car is absolutely mint and I cannot afford to spend $2500 on a used transmission with a warranty. I'd rather rebuild the old one.

So, I performed the fluid level test by having the car level and the engine and transmission cold with the engine running in Park after briefly running it through R, N, D, N, R, Park once or twice. Immediately opening the Filler Plug on the side of the GM 5L40E fluid came flowing out en masse! My understanding was that if the engine is running it will either not drain out due to low level or just trickle out. It came out as if the engine wasn't running at all. What's up with that? I should also mention that I am checking it because I have the slow or no movement symptom when the car in in very cold weather. So, I figured it was low on fluid. Any thoughts on why it flowed out so much with the engine running? 186,000 miles.

Not sure where the appropriate place for this question. I bought a 2006 X3 130K miles. Later found what I suspected to be a blown head gasket. I have oil in my coolant, losing a half gallon every week or two of coolant. Also, yellow snotty stuff under the oil cap. Local shop has tested the vehicle twice for blown head gasket and say it's fine. They say no hydrocarbons in coolant, pressure test on coolant system hot and cold passes, engine oil looks fine. I then put car on ramps and let it idle for an hour, noticed considerable amounts of water dripping from weep hole above transmission fill plug. I thought ok maybe my coolant is going in the transmission via the trans cooler. Dumped the trans oil, very thin and black and drained out as if it were water, but no brown sludge I'd expect from water mixed in. I'm at a complete loss on this car on what's going on. I'm losing considerable amounts of coolant, but there are NO leaks from under the car after an hour of running other than water dripping from trans. Any suggestions?

If I start the car and sign does not show on dashboard, the car only drives on first gear 35 Km speed max.
Took it to many mechanics and nobody could fix it.
First guy said he fixed alternator and reprogrammed ECM , The second told me to check and change Positon switch which I did today and still problem not fixed .Now they are saying its the alternator which the first guy fixed.

I am experiencing the "Clunking from transfer case" issue in a 2005 bmw x3. Clunking when turning sharp at slow speeds. Problem goes away when changing transfer case oil, but then recurs many months later. My question for you guys is if the transmission fluid mixes somehow with the transfer case and I need to change all the oil in the tranny as well? Dont believe the two are connected. Is there a process where I should be adding oil to transfer case and driving around and adding more? Is my transfer case just bad? Is it true what they say about uneven tires causing issues with transfer cases? I have Pirelli BMW star rated but always seem to have PSI issues.
Thank you for all your awesome videos.

Hi - After replacing the oil "CASTROL TRANSMAX DEX3 DEX III MULTIVEHICLE" in the GM 5L40 BMW X5 e53 transmission, the car began to vibrate at a standstill the most for D and R pillow replacement Lamforder engine, Vaico transmission, I replaced the front joints, Febi shaft support, rear joints, front shaft couplings Mayle rear Original BMW helped a little but the car still shakes. I change the oil for the second time, the reason for replacing the course of 60 thousand kilometers on a counter of 320 thousand kilometers. The car vibrated earlier at 120 km / h at load but there were no other vibrations. Any suggestions are welcome.
