Just changed the ATF and filterin my E39 530D Auto for the first time at 173,000 miles.
The fluid was still red and there was no sludge in the pan or metal particles on the magnet.
One piece of advice, always undo the filler before draining the fluid, just in case the filler is stuck. You don't want to drain the ATF only to find you can't refill it.

Buenas Jose, muchas gracias!

@@Nemesiz00 that isn't quiet true. BMW's definition of "lifetime" is the lifetime of any BMW extended warranty. According to the manufacturers (GM or ZF according to type) the ATF and filter should be changed every 60,000-80,000 miles.
Having said that I've just changed mine for the first time after 173,000 miles. The old ATF was still red, albeit dark, no sludge in the pan and no particles on the magnet.
Although the auto box seemed to be performing perfectly it is smoother and more responsive since changing the ATF

@@TheultimateDIYmachine done the same with Motul. Just before ordering it I compared Motul oil specifications like viscosity and that was very close to Texaco 7045e specs. What surprised me on web they advertise Texaco hd389 as a replacement for 7045e but it is much worse than Motul and 7045e ofc (regarding to the specs available on web).
Just one thing, I've heard that you shouldn't mix mineral and full synthetic oil, so in this case dynamic oil change is needed to make sure that mineral oil will be flushed.
After oil change there is noticeable positive change, gearbox changes gears smoother.
