  • Many people forget to line up the torque converter with the trans oil pump before reinstalling the transmission. This causes the transmission pump prongs to shear. This also makes it hard to reinstall the transmission since there will be a gap between the bellhousing and the engine. Few other things to do before reinstalling your automatic transmission:
Check alignment dowels, replace seals, replace filter and pan gasket, flush out transmission cooler lines, clear out any mounting bolt threads, replace engine and transmission mounts, replace rear main seal, clean out starter dowels/alignment pins, driveshaft center support bearing and flex joint. Hope this quick tip video helps out!

I dont remember who, but someone taught me, best to put tc in vertically with trans standing up. And spin it 3-4 times by hands til all seat stages are verified. And seat trans surface, before ever trying to bolt tc to plate. Made my install so much easier. And felt right.

i found this too late and getting ready to buy a motor and trans so seeing as i know about this now can probably do it myself. Mine is a 2013 honda civic which isnt notched but has gears on the torque converter. I didnt know when i tried the first time that it needed to be in more and like ShopLife said I tried to my misfortune to torque with the housing bolts and cracked the at bellhousing assembly and a part of the new motor essentially making them both scrap. so knowing this now is a relief. I was originally going to pay someone to connect them, now i don't think i will need to. Thank you

I'm only 42 seconds into this video and I think I already know what he's about to speak about. I was maybe 15yrs old or younger when my brother taught me so much about mechanics and he hardly ever spoke, I just paid close attention to everything he did without bein all up in his way cause I knew I was going to have to do everything he was doing some day, hands-on is how I learned everything about how to fix and keep vehicles running..I remember it like it was days ago. When installing a torque converter, at least 3 clicks depending on the years and types of the vehicle's to make sure it's all the way inside the trans pump, never install a torque converter dry without adding fluid cause it helps to prime the pump. The vehicle will not move without adding fluid to the torque converter..It's like any kind of a pump, they don't work without being primed. Plus I always changed the front pump bushing and both front and rear seals cause the bushings acts as a rod bearing in engine's. It keeps the wobble and wear of the seal by closing a tiny gap between the converter and pump. I'm pretty sure I always changed the rear bushing and seal cause the transmissions out of the vehicle's and it's easier to do with em out plus the transmission will last longer than if people just swap out transmissions and leave it at that..Shouldn't be any wobble at all when the torque converter is all the way inside the pump, plus you should never have enough space between the torque converter and bell-housing to put your fingers behind the torque converter..I watched soooo many people do it wrong and they ended up messing up the front pump by not listening to anything I'd try to tell em..I'm not perfect and I've made many mistakes when I's younger but as I got older, anything I did to people's vehicle's they never came back with the same problem. I also went to school for 2yrs in 84 and 85 cause things were starting to become complicated when automobile industry's started coming out with electronics and computers which always got under my skin until I had all that happy stuff figured out. I had to go back to school in 2002 to learn about the newer computerized vehicles. I think I made it not even a couple weeks and I got a job at a speed shop and body shop combined cause hands on is the only way I'd ever learnt anything cause everyone has their own ways of doing things and I don't understand a bunch of gabn. I usually just scope everything out and tare into it and fix everything that way..I've almost made a few mistakes but I always knew who to go to so I didn't mess up a vehicle that wasn't mine and couldn't afford to come outa pocket to correct any mistakes..Now we have Google and it comes in handy unless it's some jackleg that has no ideas whatsoever of what they're doing..I don't understand why CZcams and Google let's people that have no idea about mechanics make it past both by getting everything they've done posted anyway..A good example is a young guy decided he was going to fly by the seat of his pants and do mechanics for the world of webbernet so they know how to do simple things like brakes and whatnot. Dude removed the spindle and all just to change front brake pads. He unbolted both upper and lower ball joints, or struts, and the tie-rod ends on a front wheel drive vehicle, axle and all just to change front brake pads on a vehicle. 2 bolts and a bleeder valve, that job should've been done in 15 or 20 minutes at the most. It sometimes takes longer to remove the tire and wheel than it does to change brake pads and shoes on most American made vehicles..😂

A quick tip is when you remove a torque convertor look and mark your notch points on the pump ( transmission front ) with a paper whiteout marker . It holds up well and don't easily disappear like a marker on rust . Doing so you have a reference point for a quick and easy install ....

Thank you for doing this video! I definitely would have avoided a bunch of headaches if you would have posted it a few weeks ago ahah!
For the people watching this, here are other points that I learned going through this with my 2008 335i e92, and that were missing from the video:
    - Installing an engine when the transmission was already in the car, was tricky. If I would do it again, I would have removed either engine+transmission from the font, or removed the transmission then the engine. When I reinstalled the engine, I had a hard time aligning the pin from the torque converter, with the flex plate, and by "massaging" the engine to get inside the car, I must have pulled the torque converter enough to get it out of the prongs, which led to huge headaches after has he explains in the video
    - When installing the transmission, definitely jack up the front of the engine to make it easier to align them.
    - Jack up the car at least 23in between lifting points and floor, if you are using a harbour freight trans jack, to clear it easily.
    - After wrongly reinstalling the transmission and starting the car, it sounded normal at first, but a few minutes after, there was a sound coming from the torque converter/flexplate area, and it sounded horrible, like the torque converter was grinding the side of the transmission housing. I dropped the transmission again and could see on the oil pump prongs that they got scored from the torque converter.
    - Like he says in the video, if you put pressure on the prongs, you will damage them and potentially damage the transmission oil pump, which, to be safe, you will need to replace the whole oil pump assembly (like I did), and I would not recommend it to anybody!
    - When I was trying to sit the transmission on the engine, I must have put pressure on the flexplate, which probably led to moving the flexplate face 3mm towards the engine ==> CHECK YOUR SPACING: it should be around 3mm (max 4, but definitely not 6) between flexplate and torque converter when transmission is sitting on engine, and torque converter is pushed back in transmission as far as possible.
    - Do not try to pull torque converter into flexplate by screwing them together, you will most likely damage you flexplate.
    - For people with a ZF6HP21, the spacing I had between the flexplate contact face on the torque converter fully pushed in, and transmission housing face, was 36/37mm.
Thank you again Jason for helping me with this, and thank you for doing this video so people do not do the same mistakes!!
Guys, if you have any issues with your transmission and are in a rush, I would definitely recommend going on his website and click on "have a question?" tab: you just pay him a beer, and he will get back to you within 24hrs, with all his knowledge and help ready for you, and it is worth way more than what he is asking for. He helped me sourcing parts from website I did not know about, got me spec sheets and manuals to help me figure it out, and he has been incredibly helpful!
    Cheers!

Thanks great video. When you say fill the torque converter. About how much do you mean. If the tc was standing upright do you mean half way up. Thanks

Could you make two chalk marks on housing and converter before removing to help align easily?

For the torque converter, how much torque pressure do you need to use for the bolts?

Is there a way to get this lined up after you already have the torque convertor on the shaft? EI: turning the driveshaft, engine crankshaft?

Since you brought up the part that you should add fluid into the torque converter before installing it onto the transmission, what if you are using the same torque converter that came out of the same transmission after doing a new torque converter seal but the torque converter doesn't have any fluid coming out when you turn it upside down and you installed back the torque converter without adding fluid into it?
Wouldn't the torque converter just fill itself up when you add fluid into the transmission?

    Hi bro
I like your videos. They are informative. I have question. I change oil on my cars.
But recently I have bad experiences.
I changed oil on Hyundai sonata and I put right oil type with different brand. It kept seeping. But there was no obvious leak.
It has caused little problem in performance.. Can you make a comprehensive oil change video?
