    Quick video on how to replace the alternator in your Jeep Patriot. 2.4L engine.
    Note: This alternator can also be replaced from the top, however I find it easier going from the bottom when working of a car lift.

    In older cars they used to be at the top and would literally take a half hour to do it. The way it is now, I don't want to even attempt it. It's not that I don't know how to change an alternator, I don't want to be messing with everything else like air conditioning compressors and lying under the car to do it. However, thank you for showing me. Great video.

    Great video, straight forward and to the point!
    I just completed replacing my alternator on my 07 Patriot thanks to this video. Since the video didn't include the steps, I thought I'd leave them in the comments.
    REMOVAL of current alternator (from under the vehicle): 1. Disconnect the battery 2. Release serpentine belt (16mm) 3. Disconnect AC compressor electrical 4. Remove AC compressor bracket bolts (3 lower, 2 upper all 13mm) 5. Swing AC compressor down and let hang 6. Disconnect the electrical of the alternator 7. Remove top bolt of alternator (16mm) 8. Loosen lower bolt that sits on a cradle (bolt-16mm, nut-15mm)
    To take the alternator OUT of the engine bay: raise the alternator a little out of the cradle, move it towards the driver side 3in so it clears the cradle, move it down 4in, slide it towards the passenger side and it should come out - just like playing Tetris.
    INSTALLATION of new alternator: reverse the steps, it was easier to install than it was to remove it but make sure you hook up the electrical to the AC compressor and alternator before bolting on the AC compressor as it is difficult to get you hands in there once the AC compressor is installed.

  • @stevecirimele5585
    @stevecirimele5585 Před rokem +2

    Pro-Tip! The 140 amp alternator is larger than the 115 amp alternator, but it looks very much the same. For my 2013 Jeep Patriot 2.4L, I purchased the replacement alternator before I removed the old one, and I opted for the 140 amp replacement thinking it would be the same size and the "upgrade" would be good. Wrong. As you can see in this very helpful video, the access is very tight. I removed the AC bracket and had the AC compressor dangling on the hoses - I was able to remove the old 115 amp alternator, but I could NOT NOT get the 140 amp alternator into position. Much struggling before I carefully measured and saw that the diameter of the 140 amp is about half an inch larger than the diameter of the 115 amp alternator. Once I got the 115 amp alternator, it installed in a snap. (well, "snap" is subjective).
    Oh another Pro-Tip! When re-installing the AC compressor bracket, install all the bolts loosely at first, thus allowing you enough play to line up and "start" the bolt holding the compressor to the mounting bracket. What I did: I tightened the bracket to the engine block first, but then could not start the threads for the bolt that mounts the compressor to the bracket. Had to loosen (remove some?), the bracket bolts to the engine block, so I could start the other bolts. Once all the bolts are started, you can tighten them of course.
    PS: This video was very helpful thank you!!

    Helpful video. The AC lines have a bracket on the outside of the frame behind the windshield washer reservoir. I removed those bolts to get the AC compressor to move a little more. Most of the video shots are from the front of the engine. What worked for me on a 2015 Patriot, was to pull the AC compressor towards the front of the engine and drop the alternator down behind the AC compressor. That is what was done in this video but it is hard to see the big picture.

    Nononsense. I finally have time to fix the Jeep. Apparently the alternator doesn’t just seat there . I had to use hammer to get the holes to line up. Please people don’t be like me thinking the alternator will just fit perfectly it doesn’t. Use hammer preferably plastic hammer or gently hit the alternator. Again thank you sir for your advice.

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  Před 3 lety

      Glad to hear you got it knocked out. Got to be careful how hard you hit alternators. Can be bad for the electronics inside. Prying is much better. But yeah sometimes you got to do what you got to do. They can definitely be tight in there.

    • @ibrahimabah2893
      @ibrahimabah2893 Před 3 lety +2

      Yes sir. I tried prying it but it was not moving. I gently hammer it to just line the holes . Not on the actual alternator. I am glad you clarified that.

    I just did one of these today took both the washer and coolant reservoir out, took the passenger motor mount, unbolted the power steering pump and moved it to the side left the line attached, jack and block of wood on a jack under the oil pan lifted the engine up to gain access, removed both idler pulleys then the tensioner pulley then remove the tensioner itself, unbolted the alternator and the connections i also took the ground wire off on the frame by the alternator and slid it around and removed the alternator from the top took me about 30 mins and this was the first time i did the job lol. Only to find out the problem is in the pcm not allowing the alternator to charge the battery so now waiting on the pcm to get here. Again the way i did it was about 30 mins to remove it so about an hour overall

    Hello my names mark,I’m new to the Channel but,I like how thorough you folks are,I appreciate how you get right to the point of what the videos about, I was hoping you could help me,I’ve searched every wear on the stupid internet but just can’t find it,I have a 2016 jeep Cherokee trail hawk edition,make long story short,I replaced the dash board harness on driver side ( all plug and play harness by the way) but can’t seem to find where couple plugs go,one is under dash board by the break, the other is Underhood behind the hydraulic control module, it’s a green female plug,I would appreciate if you could help,I’m all out of ideas, thanks again and videos rock

      Hey, i appreciate you checking out the channel and the feedback. Unfortunately I wouldn't be as much help with that. That's one of those things you got to just dig around and look for where it goes. However A lot of time harnesses come with extra plugs that you may not need for accessories that your car doesn't have.

    If you’re struggling to get the top bolt of the alternator off, it’s easier to get at it from the engine bay instead. And if you can’t fit a wrench in to get the corner bolt off the AC condenser bracket, a short extension will fit underneath siding through the bracket giving access

    They seem to always make thing harder and harder to work on ourselves. Use to be an alternator would sit up front and on top. I watch this video and I say NO more working on cars if I need a lift. Was a mechanic back in the mid 80's. This and a timing chain in a Nissan Altama were the entire engine had to be taken apart practically to change, Nope not anymore

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  Před 3 lety

      Yeah they definitely engineer some cars to be a pain to work on these days. Some alternators are still easy to do though

      It should be. But I couldn't say 100% for sure without seeing it unfortunately. But if you have the same 2.4 liter then yes it's more than likely exactly the same

      Honestly without seeing it it's hard to give any advice. Are you having trouble getting the holes lined up? Try rubbing a little bit of grease on the inside of the mounting ears

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  Před 3 lety +1

      No problem. Good luck getting it together. I forget exactly which style alternator is on this but some of them have a sleeve inside of the ear that may need to be adjusted

    • @ibrahimabah2893
      @ibrahimabah2893 Před 3 lety +1

      It does have a small ring. I am not sure if you are referring to that. Does adjusting it mean pushing the ring inside? The same way you do with break pistons ? Thank you again sir I am a subscriber and I will make sure all my friends subscribe to your channel.

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  Před 3 lety +1

      @@ibrahimabah2893 yes. That little ring sometimes has to be tapped back in a little bit if it won't fit over the bracket on the car. Be careful not to snap the ear off. And thanks, I appreciate that. Consider letting one of my latest videos play start to finish and that helps me out huge. Even if it's just background noise. thanks and let me know how you make out
