• Jeep Compass Alternato...
It is a two part video. My video should be watched third.
His video was for a Jeep Compass. My vehicle is a 2008 Jeep Patriot. I am not a mechanic. Use this video with your own discretion. Thanks again guinness765 for getting this started. This is my first CZcams post. Sorry if it doesn't contain any fancy/flashy stuff.
Background on the vehicle: It sounded like a small diesel engine. kind of a clicking/knocking sound any time the engine was running. Took it to the dealership, they told me the bearings on the alternator were wearing out and it would be $650 to replace. i've replaced a few alternators before in different vehicles so i was aware of how much labor this SHOULDN'T entail. In this case, i was wrong. It seems jeep wants to make it as absolutely difficult as possible to remove this thing on your own. Thanks to guinness765, I thought i had enough direction/confidence to tackle it on my own. Turns out i was right! the only difference i had from his video is the location where i found it easier to actually remove the alternator once it was disconnected/unbolted. I wasn't going to post this but i've done tons of work on my vehicles thanks to CZcams and so i thought it was time for me to contribute back to the free knowledge community. I hope this helps!
Thanks to jeep it takes a barrage of tools to get this job done. everything from 7/16 to 5/8 sockets as well as 10mm to 13mm sockets and box wrenches of similar sizes. I was lucky i had a 5/8 box wrench because there was no way to loose the belt tensioner with a socket. I used deep and shallow sockets of the various sizes listed above where appropriate. sometimes the only way to gain access with enough clearance for the wrench was to use a shallow socket with a very small (maybe 1 inch long) adapter, thread a bolt out an inch or so, then remove the adapter to maintain clearance. tons of fun!
This job is absolutely possible for anyone with average experience working on vehicles. it took me about 3.5 - 4 hours start to finish. definitely would have taken longer had i not watched guinness765's two videos. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Thanks a million William, sure enough I tried removing alternator from the front like suggested for Compass, no go, you saved me a lot of time and frustration, it came out the back by the oil filter as you show on your video.
Wow what a job, most of my Alts in the past were about an hour max, they usually are on top, easy to get to, this job sucked. You know what is crazy; I replaced the 10 year old serpentine belt but no sense in keeping the old belt as a backup since you can only install it from bottom after jacking up Jeep and removing skid plate, yeah right like I am going to do all of that broke down on the side of the road :)
So a little history on our 2008 Jeep Patriot Sport 2.0L with CVTrans at 96k miles, for a couple of months the engine was making a loud grinding/clanking noise in the lower front part of the engine. No loss of power, no problem with Trans., I could not get my stick down close enough to listen to where this noise was coming from (old school trick :). Many, including myself, thought maybe timing chain, yet again no power loss, miss or back firing. Dealer wanted $120 to diagnose problem, local shops $80. I am almost 60 and have been working on cars/trucks since I was a teenager, I have heard Many bearings, clutches, etc. but this one stumped me so I continued to drive it knowing when it breaks then I will know what was wrong.
Well sure enough the battery idiot light came on this week, and running across this video and comments of same LOUD bearing noise, found my problem. When I pulled off skid plate found pieces of the bearing.
Job cost around $220 for ReMan Alt. and new Belt. Dealer gave me est. $800. Not sure how much longer I can do these type of jobs at my age, these new car Engineers are trying to kill off us Shade Tree Mechs. :(
Sorry for long reply, it is an old guy thing :) So Youngsters if I can do this job, you have no excuse :)
2024 now & I greatly appreciate this video. Replaced my alternator in 2022 the difficult way and now looking for an easier way bc its bad again. Thanks !
I work as an automotive technician. You are correct about going in through the rear, it is a lot easier but it is possible from the front of the wheel well. The most important thing is to move that compressor and its bracket to get clearance. Great video!
Thanks William! I'm a licensed tech and this saved me a bunch of grief. I knew the job was coming in so I figured I'd hit CZcams to see how everyone was doing it. Your trick of pulling it out beside the oil filter worked perfectly - Chrysler says to remove it where you initially showed. It took me about 45 minutes total working on a hoist with air tools (1/4" and 3/8" air ratchets and a 3/8" impact gun to remove the skid plate).
And yes, that A/C thing is the compressor.
Someone asked about socket sizes so here goes:
10 mm for the skid plate.
16 mm shallow socket and/or wrench for the belt tensioner, idler pulley and lower alternator bolt.
13 mm deep and shallow sockets and/or wrench for the A/C compressor, compressor bracket, the top alternator bolt and the nut for the main cable to the alternator.
Jay Poel thanks for the extra info I'm going to try to fix minds tomorrow
I'm a Ford auto tech and this is a stupid setup. I'd also like to say "screw you jeep for the unnecessary overrunning clutch on the alternator pulley". Great video, thanks for posting
Thanks for this video man. Gives me the confidence to try it myself.
You know, in my old 93 Chevy the alternator is on top of the engine, front and center. Two bolts and it's out.
Why in God's name I should have to take the wheel off is beyond me. Seriously, I laughed out loud when you said "screw you jeep".
My man! I know this video is 6yo but maaaaan I appreciate you for taking the time showing hw to mount the alternator this way. Ive followed other videos and I’ve struggle to put it back and your way i did in In seconds. Thank You!
Thanks dude....i am changing out the pulley on mine in an asphalt apartment parking lot. Dodging traffic seem like half the battle. Wish me luck
great video man i was looking everywhere to find what the noise was till i was driving one day heard a weird pop looked under the hood and seen parks coming up out of the alternator so i googled that and ultimately found your video thank you
good share. gave me more confidence to replace mine. they wanted $700 to replace it. F'that! I did have to pick up a new 10-16 mm socket and wrench set.
Seriously, thanks for this. Saw this yesterday which gave me the confidence to do it today. Still a pain but would have been 100x worse if I didn't do it this way.
Of all the videos this was the most helpful. Ty brother
This helped a bunch, thank you for the upload!
Thanks for the tip and the simple easy to understand straight to the point video great job
Thank you!!! I definitely could not get it out through the front. This worked for 2015 Jeep Patriot.
Son of a B. I gotta do this today after work. Shop quoted $1200 to replace. Thank you for sharing.
I couldn't believe how the compressor just hangs by the refrigerant lines and how far over you have to push it. I was just waiting for the the "Hiss of Death".
Great video, buddy.
Gracias amigo! Great video that way I don't have to pay so much money@ the dealership!
thanks this videos. you help me fix my patriot!!!!!! jeep dude from finland. thanks dude more videos
Excellent sharing of information. Thank You
Thanks !
It has been a great help !
Thanks you. Pretty sure I'll be using this tip this weekend.
Easiest way ever thanks bro for sharing...
You know some people upload this kind of video and go hmm this might be stupid cause i don't have a great camera angle, etc but it might help somebody one day. Well good job buddy I thank u personally for this video it helped me figure it out.
Did you for sure have to remove the bracket and ac to get access between near the oil filter? I am in the process of trying to get my ac out of the way right now and trying to determine if it's necessary
Thank you so much you helped me out a whole lot thank you
Thank you I change one yesterday it took me 1 hour
Thank you for the info
You’re good. Thanks Bro‼️‼️‼️
Was there only one bolt holding the alternator in place? If so then all I have to do tomorrow is take that bolt off and it should be out! I had to stop early because it started to rain
thanks man! let's see how I'm going to be able to fit this 400 amp excessive amperage alternator in there LOL
Excellent..!
Thank you sir
Thanks!
My question is how tf do I get that belt off to get to my alternator
right on
Take the ring off bro. See a guy loose a finger once.
D Eret good point! I make sure I take it off around anything moving for sure ie. drills, saws, etc. not enough can be said about a good pair of mechanic's gloves too!
Here in Mexico is expensive too! Tnk gd bless you!
Awesome. Thank you. You didn't keep track of the socket sizes you wound up using to get in there did you...? lol... I'll figure it out pretty quick. Thanks for posting this though.
Rion Motley I probably should have! Of course, they couldn't design it to use just a few...
thanks for posting and I'm with u on screw jeep I don't like em
thanks mate for the info,my wife has 2011jeep patriot, and what a fucking job lm going to do soon, only Dunn 110k we use km in Australia,f
uck jeep Australia for expensive parts, now l buy parts directly from the states which is much cheaper, your info was great, time for a cold beer🍺
Why did you feed the camera LSD before filming? XD XD
Takes me longer to get all that crap out of the way. Then it does to put it back in....
Maaan of course it's in a stupid spot. Just changed control arms on both sides, the next day the alternator dies. It never happens all at once, woulda been much more convenient... Thanks for the vid tho
How long did this take? lol im just a dude as well.. fu*& paying big money and being overcharged
Ron MacDonnell if I had to do it again? 2.5 - 3 hours? tops. this first time i'm sure it took 4, maybe 5hrs. between getting the tire on and off and figuring everything out. felt like longer. i'd put aside at least that much time. then a few hours for some cold brewskies
Dude I'm going through that problem right now so tomorrow is going to be a tough day for me I assume but with that video that help me a lots plus save some money I wasn't planning on using
My kinda Just A Dude
