Thanks for posting this. My son's 08 Jeep Patriot alternator is bad. planning to help him replace it this weekend. Looks to be a bit of a job, but we're going go give it a shot, maybe save a couple hundred bucks in labor.

U don’t really need to loosen the motor mounts. U can just removed the bolts for the condenser.

Do you have to reposition the crank?

Gotta love those decoupler pulleys. My sister owns a CompASS. So far I replaced the transmission/alternator pulley/LR wheel speed sensor/and vapor canister, but almost every time she fills up the gas tank it stalls. Never found the fix on that one yet..

Bro I have a compass for about almost 10 years now... the biggest thing I have replaced is a wheel bearing. You’ll got shitty luck or just don’t take care of your cars 🤷🏽‍♂️

Absolutely a bad rollover valve in the top of the tank. Unfortunately, the same guys that located the alternator in an almost un-fixable place designed the gas tank and decided to plastic weld the rollover valve in the tank and not make a replacement part. You can find tanks on eBay but I'm sure you'd eventually run into the same issue - new tank costs about $550. The problem is that the valve sticks open and when you get to the top of the tank, fuel runs into the charcoal canister and when you start the engine and start driving, the computer sees a rich mixture and stalls you out until it corrects. Most people I've talked to fill it below full always - pain in the CompASS.

Its just easier to check YT, removing the ac bracket is what i was missing going alone.. That opened her right up.

What brand of alternator did you install?

  • @CALEB11711

the electric harness of the alternator, it is easier to remove it by arriva, when this is still fixed, it becomes better leverage to orpimir the safety, and pull out, without disturbing the lines of the compressor.

10mm, 13mm, 15mm, 16mm wrench and sockets, some extensions, I just did one of these today REMOVED FROM THE TOP. both the washer and coolant reservoir out, took the passenger motor mount, unbolted the power steering pump and moved it to the side left the line attached, jack and block of wood on a jack under the oil pan lifted the engine up to gain access, removed both idler pulleys then the tensioner pulley then remove the tensioner itself, unbolted the alternator and the connections i also took the ground wire off on the frame by the alternator and slid it around and removed the alternator from the top took me about 30 mins and this was the first time i did the job lol. Only to find out the problem is in the pcm not allowing the alternator to charge the battery so now waiting on the pcm to get here. Again the way i did it was about 30 mins to remove it so about an hour overall

Is this procedure the same for a 2014 jeep patriot 4 cyl.?

  • @RielFunny

It's actually pretty simple. I just pushed the ac compressor towards the wall of the passenger side then it literally fell out in between the compressor and the oil filter.

Seriously. I have to replace the alternator on my 2009 compass and when I was looking it up (in comparisons to other vehicles) I thought the same thing.

I just did a 2011 Compass Latitude 2.4L today. It took about an hour and a half on the ground and this includes replacing the battery. It's not bad. The first thing to do is remove the 3 bolts for the AC compressor. Disconnect the connector for the compressor and lower it down and let it hang by the hoses. You will have a significant amount of room to work and the alternator will come out. I didn't pull it out the way he did in the video. It comes out over the compressor towards the tire. There was more than enough room.
I wouldn't go chasing alternator bolts until the compressor is moved. It is far easier once it is out of the way. It was easy for me because I have replaced dozens in Nissan Maxima's and V6 Altima's and it comes out almost the same way and located in a similar position.
