I can't help but smile at Simone sweetly calling Floor, "Floortje" at the end when thanking her.
Though I am not religious, I consider this one of the most beautiful and moving things ever written. It is the first movement of a longer suite, the “Stabat Mater”, composed in 1736 by Giovanni Pergolesi. It is based on a 13th century hymn about Mary mourning her crucified son. Pergolesi was suffering from tuberculosis, and died the day he completed the suite. He was only 26 years old. “Stabat Mater” is written for soprano and contralto, though the contralto line is often performed by a counter-tenor. In the Epica version, Floor Jansen does the contralto line, which is just mind-blowing in itself given that she normally performs in the soprano register.
When she says,, "Look at that!," I think Floor was simply remarking on how nice the audience was to her, what a great reception she received.
Simone and Floor are not only Dutch.
They've also been friends for a long time.
Greetings from the Netherlands.
Can you imagine these thousands of young metal fans listening to this classical piece in such reverence. During the long into by the strings you could almost feel the pain Pergolesi was feeling when he composed this, his last masterpiece, knowing he was dying from tuberculosis at only 27 years old. Thanks for a great reaction.
How to quiet thousands of metalheads and still have them love it. LOL This is a hymn to that goes back to the 13th century.
This was at the Retrospect 10th anniversary show in 2013, same show as the Sancta Terra video you watched.
Absolutely.
Thousands of metalheads really into it.
Perhaps we should consider for a moment the reverse, what if a metal song was played in the middle of a classical concert?
It's worth a thought. . . . . . .
@@572Btriode also wonder what if a classical piece was played in the middle of a pop show
@@MrSh0110 Good luck with that. . . . .
This amazes me! A bunch of metal heads at a concert where they bust out an aria and they are just as appreciated and just as enthusiastic! Love it❣️
Stabat Mater Dolorosa, meaning "Sorrowful Mother was standing" (at the cross) is a 13th century hymn. In 1736 a Baroque composer Giovanni Pergolesi wrote the musical setting for it, basically on his death bed, while he was dying of tuberculosis at the age of 26.
Quite sad story and a wonderful piece of art.
Since Epica already had a full orchestra with them, they decided to make a good use of it and play music like this. If you'd like to hear violin + electric guitar at the same concert, watch Epica - Presto (by Vivaldi).
Yes, that one is great fun and Isaac de la Haye really keeps up with the 1st Violin player of that Orchestra...
This is one of the great pieces of sacred music in the western tradition. Floor willing to take most of the alto part allows her warmer lower tones to support Simone's more colored soprano. While you can get some technically better versions, I have yet to hear another version with as much warmth and emotion of a mother's pain.
Beautiful piece of music. Floor singing the alto part like a beautiful viola and Simone a violin. It's refined perfection these two ladies bestow. Wonderful reaction.
It was originally scored for soprano and alto voices, so in this version, although both Floor and Simone are sopranos, Floor takes on the lower alto part.
They have had the same teacher in the past. Wonderful how they harmonize.
"Delivering pure greatness" - spot on 🤘
7 centuries old lyrics on 3 centuries music in the middle of a metal concert.
Both are so such good singers. That bright tone of Simone!
Only last week, I was at Epica's 20th anniversary - but I sure would have love to be at the 10th anniversary and have this great experience. You won't hear Opera at a pop or rap concert, but you might at a Metal concert - Metalheads are opened to beautiful music regardless of the genre.
BFF's - Simone and Floor had the same vocal coach when they were younger. Lacrimosa = tears. Mary at the Crucifixion. "Standing Mother Sad".
Bet you didnt expect this at a metal concert !
Great reaction , The stunned look on your face in the beginning was timeless
Your commentary was perfect!
If you want to hear more about the vocal ins and outs of this song and this performance by Epica and Floor I would advise you to look for the reaction of Elizabeth Zharoff ("the Charsimatic voice") She is a top level opera singer who also loves metal, and she has done many reactions two Nightwish, Floor and Epica, and she is really nice, easy going, funny and witty personallity to boot.

Floor can sing with anyone it's remarkable your right so much talent especially when you're talking about metal singers God bless
Yes they sound the same in many transitions nice catch.
So gorgeous. I love that they expose their audiences to other forms of music.
It broadens the mind and adds value to everyone's experience - even if they did not enjoy it, one cannot deny the artistry.
The Stabat Mater is a 13th-century Christian hymn to Mary, which portrays her suffering as Jesus Christ's mother during his crucifixion. Its author may be either the Franciscan friar Jacopone da Todi or Pope Innocent III
they used to be roommates back in the day, and now both are married with a kid, they're still friends. I believe someone threw something , a bunch of flowers maybe and it landed where floor couldn't reach it
4:40 onwards Simone nails this song!
It was well said Mr. MMR.
Even if these (like Sancta Terra) are not Epica's best songs, I think its a special treat to hear Simone and Floor sing together.
Stabat mater dolorosa is not a song of Epica, it is a classical song by Pergolesi
I'm telling you all, and most of us know this... Floor is SO TALENTED in her dynamic control that she can sing LIKE Simone when she wants to. BTW, you should check out Epica Sancta Terra w/ Floor. They harmonize amazingly well, will full orchestra and choir too!!
I think he allready did
I did Sancta Terra also. Love to hear your thought. Thanks!
I mean Simone sing the mezzo part, and Floor the alto part. For this, it is, what written from Perlogise Please correct me, when i am not correct . Forget 😓 Great reaction 🤘
Good evening 😊🍷, it's always a pleasure to watch someone receiving something unexpected. 😰 You looked like a boy on Christmas morning, unboxing something completely new but exciting 🤔😀. But your reaction is massive metal because of " Death Defying " curiosity for the unknown ⚠️😉 Your modest way by not reacting, when you just don't know, rocks. In the end, we can analyse as much as we want, but this was just LOVELY 😙! Greetings from Germany and parkinson's sucks 🤗⚘and EMPPU RULES 😎
Floor Jansen and Simone Simons are the two best singers in the Symphonic Metal genre. The only other singer who comes close is Within Temptation's Sharon den Adel and I'm not sure about her b/c I've never heard Sharon sing this genre.
Marcela Bovio (Mayan, DHWH), Dianne van Giersbergen (Xandria, Ex Libris) come to mind.
Don't forget Tarja Turenen
@@ianknowles8934 Yes my bad...Tarja certainly deserves a place next to Floor and Simone. Her voice has gotten a little "older" now but she still has the biggest opera chops in Symphonic Metal.
Swanheart has always been a favorite of mine, as well as 'I Walk Alone'(one of the creepiest videos I've ever seen)but her voice was at its peak in those days. She could have sung in almost any opera house.
@@BrendonChase_2015 I know van Giersbergen but not Bovio. I'll watch her video.
actually there is a noticeable difference in their voices Simone is more of a lyric Soprano which tends to be lighter or brighter Floor is more full or Dramatic Soprano which tends to have more depth and color or warmth
Both Simone and Floor are sopranos, yet Floor sang the alto role. Sopranos usually can get deep enough to sing this part, but not with any degree of power like Floor did here. And as others have remarked, one of Floor's great talents is her ability to mesh her voice with any other singing partner. At the opposite end of the spectrum is Floor singing with Soilwork "Let this River Flow". Again she just fitted right in with Björn's singing - well I won't spoil the fun - you'll just have to react to it. czcams.com/video/-yXB7CB6DmU/video.html
Lyrics: At the cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping, Close to Jesus to the last.
