As an actual fat person, I fully agree with Ethan. They're literally gatekeeping being fat. They're invalidating someone's feelings and personal struggles telling them they're not allowed to have body image issues because they're not fat enough. Everyone has their issues, and they should be allowed to express them and talk about them without other people getting personally offended by it. I do disagree on one thing though... there are definitely obese elderly people.
They forget body dysmorphia exists. i am not trying to say this in a snotty way, but i have always been underweight because ive had a restrictive (as opposed to binge) ED since i was 9. however, even tho i know weight wise i am not “fat” i still FEEL and see myself as “fat” because of body dysmorphia so whatever weight i see on a scale translates to “fat” in my head and thats what taylor was showing as well. its not full fat phobia. i see women that are “bigger” than me and they’re beautiful and i wish i had their confidence and body. It all has to do with SELF image. strictly.

As a fatty myself I do agree with Ethan. Two things can be true at once: fat people deserve the same respect as everyone else, and having too much fat is detrimental to your health. When I was thinner my joints didn't hurt as much, it was easier to exercise, etc.
Obviously nobody chooses to be fat for the sake of being fat. I gained weight because I was depressed and developed a binge eating disorder. Before I started getting help, I felt completely out of control when I was around food. For a while I convinced myself that this was ok, but deep down I always knew it wasn't. I'm now losing all that weight I put on and am feeling a lot better. I don't think there's anything wrong about what Ethan said but I understand if you're really struggling with your weight how it can be hard to hear.

I'm in the same position as you but honestly? I'd rather they stop talking about it altogether. Not only is it boring, but eating habits are a fucking miserable topic for a lot of people and so many listeners tune into escape the stress of everyday life, not think about it more. Just make sure you get all your vitamins and minerals, go for walks instead of driving, have a healthier sleep cycle and you'll already start to feel better. With that under your belt, the rest will feel easier. Talking about counting calories and fucking measuring your every meal is unsustainable long term and will just give you anxiety about eating. It's not healthy nor is it productive to focus on it.

I worked in a retirement home for the last 8 years and there are definitely people over the age of 80 that would be considered obese or even morbidly obese but you don't have to be 400lbs to be considered morbidly obese.

@@Katerpillar_ how old and how fat? obese people usually don't live to 70 years old, in fact a lot of them have heart attacks by the time they're 50 when a normal healthy person would only start having heart attacks at 65+ If you mean someone with the shape of say donald trump, he's not obese or "fat", he's overweight, there's a lot of old people with huge bellys but their isn't much fat on the rest of their body. There is exeptions to the long life/not fat thing, you could be normal and healthy your whole life and only when you retire at 60+ at which point you start gaining the weight so they obviously will live longer but not as long as if they didn't gain the weight.

The Taylor Swift conversation really got me because I live with someone who has had a severe eating disorder for the past 20 years and has been hospitalised multiple times because of it.
I can tell you now that this person, despite being 5’5” and 92lbs, does see themselves as fat every time they look in a mirror.
We don’t discriminate against anyone else who’s irrational fear has caused a full blown loss of control, in the search for control.
People with illnesses like eating disorders are truly in the mindset that they will do (and believe) ANYTHING as long as it keeps them as far away from their dominating fear (loss of control, gaining weight etc) as humanely possible.
The person I live with, I know for a fact, I will lose to her eating disorder; and it’s not because she’s weak - it’s because it’s a disease that grows stronger with time, and some people, towards the point where they require it the most, have used up all their resources in their never ending search for control - that they don’t have any left at the end to keep fighting.
As their illness grows stronger their body only grows weaker.
So to anyone out there who lives with; or cares for, someone with an eating disorder, I know how helpless it can make you feel knowing how consumed that person is with their illness, and I know they can act irrational and delusional, but just make sure they know you love them and you will be with them every step of recovery when they’re ready ♥️

ICU nurse- I have actually had 450 lb+ patients who were around 80. BUT for some, it was their size that caused their respiratory failure and inevitable death. Most morbidly obese elderly patients we get have insane pressure ulcers, infected skin tears in their folds, obesity hypoventilation syndrome which ends up making them dependent on bipap and eventually the ventilator. As far as the pressure ulcers and skin tears, these issues go on for so long that infection and eventual sepsis take over. The elderly morbidly obese patients do not recover or fight sepsis and pneumonia nearly as well if at all.
Felt like the crew was trip sitting Dan during a bad trip 😂

Born and raised Oregonian here! Our prison system staffs our DMV, County dog shelters and prevents the police depts from having to hire staff for the prison kitchens, laundries and for vehicle maintenance for police vehicles. It's literal slavery. You get time off your sentence for it(one day off for every 3 worked) but that can be taken away at the whim of a screw having a bad day. What's ALSO really fucking crazy is the fact that the state was founded as a haven for white people who were trying to escape reconstruction. Black people weren't even allowed in the state until the thirties, were not allowed to own land until the fifties and there were still literal sundown counties until the late eighties. If it weren't for Eugene and Portland, we'd be a red state for SURE.

My partner is a scientist and gives no shit about aesthetics. He just wanted to have healthy skin. He was the one who told me about the ordinary brand. I also heard that it started as a project, or experiment or something and wasn't necessarily meant to become a bonafide brand. It was just demonstrating how pointless the beauty industry is.

As a CNA who’s worked in nursing homes for the past 3 years, trust me I have witnessed my fair share of morbidly obese 80 yr olds. There’s not a ton but they’re out there and they’re either sooo mean and rude or sweet bby angels but regardless they always have a nightstand full of snacks 🥰

When Ethan mentioned being "obese" is unhealthy to what standards? Because according to doctors you can get called obese and look slim so what is obese?
Obesity is measured by BMI which has been used to study health outcomes. Certain BMI ranges are associated with certain negative health outcomes.
@@Negus222 yes!!! there’s some truth to that but the BMI measured by doctors have been known to have some issues regarding different people plus not to mention muscular people can also be classified as obese due to mass size of there body not including fat and they’re perfectly healthy … so there’s a lot of controversy if we’re referring to what doctors call “obese” or even overweight, but I think “fat” would be a more appropriate term to use when referring to someone who might have health complications due to their weight.

You are skipping the real issue that people do not distinguish between overweight, obese, and morbidly obese. Anything that is not skinny is not fat.
leftovers is SUCH an important show. hasan's streams are a little too information filled for people like me who are a bit younger and with focus issues or are easily filled with dread at bad news. with leftovers, both of you bring a balanced mix of the important things we should learn but also with goofs and gaffs that make it easy to digest and fun to watch. it has helped me learn so much about my own country that i never even thought about and ive been able to educate my right leaning family members and help them as well
also what dan said about trans people is so right, ive seen a lot of fear mongering trying to make it seem like trans people are invading and spreading their transness to millions of people when its like.... ive only met one other trans person in person in my entire life. you may meet more trans people online but the general population isnt online 24/7 and thats who is voting.
