The great thing about making a holiday-themed horror movie: it's appropriate for that holiday AND Halloween!
well John Hinckley Jr. did try to kill regan over his obsessions with jodie foster...
the guy now has his channel on youtube for his music.
such a weird path
I remember seeing this in the theatre, and yeah, it didn't seem that great at the time. I didn't know about all the cut scenes, and I think I'm going to give this one another look.
Do Spaceballs from 1987 next! Its really hilarious!
I would watch this show on Dvd.
I absolutely love this classic slasher film from 1981 and it's one of the better films you reviewed on your show. Brandon..........I salute you.
If Harry Warden isn't bad enough, the miners accidentally wake up Rodan
Or wake up Brandon Richardson
Not to mention the Balrog.
And hence the premise for "Reign of Fire". Fortunately, Batman saved us in that one.
Dude...that's a riot.
I was mining and woke up the warden
Don't feel bad, Brandon, I laughed hard at the minor joke.... then immediately felt bad that I got booed for it.
i know you, you're on DA, nice to meet you on another site
Just another reason the MPAA shouldn't exist.
Using the death of a celebrity as an excuse to force their own pathetic 'values' onto others is just wrong.
That's a bit extreme. The problem with the MPAA is that they don't understand movies sometimes. If the MPAA didn't exist then movies/tv shows would have to cater to parents screaming about the violent content; just like that time where people complained about the gore on THE WALKING DEAD for being TOO GORY and that it was inappropriate for kids. Also, if ratings didn't exist then you would see tons of parents bringing their babies and toddlers to a horror movie.
@@sammy1552 OK, they can suggest a rating, but cannot order a studio to cut anything. (TBH, I don't believe they have any legal authority to do that anyway. The problem is most studios will just go along with it rather than telling the MPAA to eff off)
@@the_once-and-future_king. Thank goodness for directors who plan ahead. Some of them know the MPAA will restrict the violence or sex so they just save it for home media releases. Example: Adam Marcus (the guy who made Jason goes to Hell) knew the MPAA was going to butcher the gore so he planned ahead and saved that footage for an unrated release on dvd.
One more thing, one good thing that came out of the MPAA is Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake had the prison brawl with the cops in the theatrical cut instead of the needless rape scene in the director’s cut.
@@sammy1552 they still complain about the movies and shows even as we speak so again they are pointless
@john smith Where do you live?
The cliffhanger ending is utterly superb. No wonder why is one of Quentin Tarantino favorite slasher flicks.
Man, I wish QT would make a true horror film. I know deathproof could be seen as a horror but I think it's more of an action drama, (did I invent a new genre..lol) with one gory setpiece.
Awesome review btw. This Canadian horror fan approves. :)
Neat! Didn't know that!
@@steveharvey2102 I'm not opposed to the idea of a QT horror movie, but I'm not entirely sure he has the patience for it.
@@michaelccozens Doesn't have the patience? I think his 10 minute dialogue scenes would disagree =P
"It's like a Canadian version of Frank Welker...."
Funny you should mention Welker, because in a handful of episodes of Inspector Gadget, Don Franks actually played Dr. Claw because Frank Welker was unavailable at the time.
And he also played Megs
Can I just say that ‘Holy Shit, I think that Marty might be the killer!’ Should be a tag line in every killer movie.
i think if its remade for the 3rd time they should just make Harry Warden the killer and not tj or axel.
Man, this channel is an absolute goldmine. 🤘
Pun intended? ;)
Let's go Brandon 🤣
Style wise he's sort of a descendant of The Cinema Snob
badum tsss
@@Skullkan6 snob sucks lol
I actually loved this. The underground, the miners mask being creepy. Even the characters. It all just worked.
Sorry for all the other people spamming Godzilla, you make those videos at the rate you want to
You know, that might not have been the best horror slasher from the 80s, but those kills were creative and effective. Just makes me feel bad for the makeup artists having their scenes cut
Uncut,it's actually very good.
It always stood out to me, sure it follows a lot of the standard stuff but the setting of a mine has a creepiness by default, there was also a natural reason for him to be wearing a mask and the mask/mine outfit was cool and intimidating.
I also like that they put some personality on the townspeople, you really feel bad when the sheriff gets that Valentine from the woman that arrived after she'd been killed, I love little touches like that.
It's easily one of the best slashers of the 80s. The best standalone slasher for sure
"Now I need to find a 4th of July horror movie that I can review on Thanksgiving!"
Well, there's always Uncle Sam.
Hahaha... "Well, pal, the bad news is, your girlfriend's dead. The good news is, though, that now you don't need that condom any more!"
Brandon is so delightfully dark sometimes. I adore this channel ♥️
Is that what Tom Atkins said in the Mandela Effect version of _Night of The Creeps?_
I'm genuinely disappointed that this wasn't a Halloween 3 style story about a killer greeting card company.
That sounds awesome though
If it’s any consolation, I’m pretty sure there are two separate movies about killer gyms.
The only slasher where I gasped out loud when someone died due to how much I liked them.
I felt the same, I cared even more about the woman in the dryer after her Valentine showed up for the sheriff.
I like the Murder Haiku at 8:26
Thank you for the time stamp.
It's funny that this one could have been saved not only for Valentine's but also another Canuxsploitation XD Also glad that we were able to get the unedited version too.
Yeah, I was thinking Canuxsploitation too.
How is that funny?
The ballad of Harry Warden is one of the most haunting theme songs for an '80s slasher, as well as a good country folk song.
All they needed was Gordon Lightfoot to sing it
@@richardbutton1179 that... Would have been pretty cool.
@@richardbutton1179ou read my mind! Gave me a heavy Gordon Lightfoot kind of tune.
Pity this film was so butchered (no pun intended) by the censors. It’s a pretty good little horror film.
The remake wasn’t bad either.
It would've been a bit better if there were practical effects and more likable characters.
I didn't care for the remake, wasn't buying Jensen being mean at the end, the sheriff was a dick, really no one I cared about, plus when we see Harry throughout most the film he's a big buff guy in the outfit and it was more believable when he manhandled the victims, at the end they had to use a smaller actor in order to fit with the "twist", wasn't nearly as intimidating.
I remember sneaking into the theater as a kid and watching this back in 81
I do like, as mentioned by Brandon, that the setting is unique and with the protagonists being a little older and working class.
Oh my god you should totally do Rock & Rule! One of my favorite animated films of the 80's! It has its flaws, but it's a fun movie
I am surprised Brandon hasn't yet. Fingers crossed.
I second this.
"the fastest way to a girl's heart is through her rib cage"
was that an Ice Nine Kills reference?
Hey! Mr. Multiverse! Fancy meeting you here, big huge fan by the way!
Probably, I know that they are making a My Bloody Valentine song on the Silver Scream 2 called Take your Pick
I laughed my ass off when Brandon went full Canadian.
Take off, eh!!
Canadian mode: on
It's interesting that they filmed this in a real mining town. Oddly enough it reminds me of how I would imagine that town that inspired Silent Hill was possibly like more or less before it became uninhabitable to this day.
What's funny is that they chose the mine because it looked old and dirty but the town excited for the movie filming there cleaned it up so the production spent half the budget making the mine look old and dirty again
@@themarkiscookin Honestly that's kind of hilarious in a way lol XD Thanks so much for sharing that with me :)
@@themarkiscookin that’s so funny!
I've been to Centralia. It is of course not much of a town anymore, but it was cool to drive down the two remaining roads and see a few of the abandoned buildings ... Edit: Centralia was a Pennsylvanian coal mining town that inspired the Silent Hill story. It was deserted due to an underground coal fire.
@@1down4upworkshop61 That sounds like a pretty interesting trip :D
looks like the Mad Gasser of Matoon is offering his heart to Brandon in the thumbnail
I get that reference. 🙂👍
It has been 0 days since a Mad Gasser of Matoon reference.
Two tees in Mattoon. You wouldn't call the slasher from Friday the 13th Jason Vorhes, would you? :)
Lennon wrote the lyrics, _"Happiness is a warm gun"_ and his very last words were, *"...I've been shot."*
And the MPAA thought a _slasher_ movie might cause someone to shoot people?
Then and now, there are some people who can't accept that random violence is just that: random! So, in order to feel a false sense of security, they blame it on slasher films, violent video games, rap lyrics, Satanism, witchcraft, you name it....
Between Mark David Chapman and Charles Manson, The Beatles' music killed more people than horror movies.
And marijuana causes schizophrenia, comic books create psychopaths, sharing leads to communism... it's a slippery slope, ya know?
@Christopher Saiyan rap music does promote violence and everything else
@@maybeimrambling9401 Might want to explain why violent crime rates have dropped by some 50+% in the US since 1990, then. That's based on the FBI's annual UCR reports.
Love everything about this film. Even the Gordon Lightfoot style folk song at the end!
YYEEEESSSSS!!! A Rock&Rule reference. I have been hoping desperately for you to cover that movie. It is one of my top 5 favorites of ALL TIME!!!
Rock & Rule absolutely rocks. Not only is the villain Mok voiced by Don Francks, but his singing voice is done by both Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. Plus there are songs by Cheap Trick, Debbie Harry, and Earth Wind and Fire.
This is one of my all time favorite horror films. So much on it was done just perfectly. I like to think it would have been appreciated a lot more if the MPAA didn't go all slasher killer on it themselves.
exactly.the uncut effects are awesome.too bad they got cut but glad they got restored on the spec.ed.dvd
The MPAA only assigns a rating, they can't make a studio cut anything. It's the public that determines the standards for a movies ratings and it makes sense, many films have innocent sounding names and even the commercials don't always present the film accurately see the war film "Labyrinth", imagine taking your kid to that without seeing it was "R" first.
That DECAPITATION gag never gets old, dude. Great video, you beautiful snarky bastard. \m/
This movie is a “Who’s Who” of Canadian female actors. Early appearances of Cynthia Dale and Lori Hallier and Patricia Hamilton.
Man you forgot one of Don Francks' most important voice role.
He was the OG Boba Fett, in the Holiday Special AND in Droids!
---in the Holiday Special
We do not talk about it here.
@@Salty_dog132 Pf, the cartoon was the best part. The only part worth talking about. I'll talk about it all I want. Don Francks was a better voice for Boba than Temua could hope to be.
Nope, still aweful! Lol
Although I do like the Bea Arthur part, the Starship song and of course the cartoon.
And at least the Holliday "special" didn't kill off 3 characters we all grew up with and loved :(
Cheers.
HEY....we can talk about Droids. But we do NOT talk about the Holiday Special!
I think of the alternative band "My Bloody Valentine" before I even remember that it WAS a movie. Suffice to say, the band was a lot more successful with the name.
The real ballad of Harry Warden:
“You thought it was over
It’s not over
I came back
I brought my axe
You thought it was over
It’s not over
I caaaame baaaaack!!!”
Henry Warden:
"Sex with a severed HEAD!"
Still the best Canadian slasher film (if you count Black Christmas as a proto-slasher).
I can't imagine Brandon getting as flustered as he looks in the cover art.
Don Franks was too intense, the MPAA had to cut out those parts as well. They're still searching to this day.
The actor playing tj is a really good actor you can't tell he's really British
It doesn't hurt that he is affecting a Maritime accent, which harbors many vestiges of British speech.
I have a Fourth of July Horror movie you can review on Thanksgiving: Larry Cohen and William Lusteig's Uncle Sam. Not very good especially when compared to their previous colabs on Maniac Cop 1 and 2, but hey whatever works.
Aw nuts, I was kinda hoping this one would be part of your next Canuxploitation-a-thon, but that's alright~
This one really never got its due for a host of reasons, mostly the MPAA and general obscurity, and that's a shame, the BV Killer is really memorable and the movie's never boring in its side stuff. Yeah, it's a by-the-book slasher and all, but like you said, the setting and characters are nice and organic, gives you a weird feeling of being there during the holidays. The humor's a bit distracting at times, but I'ma hold out hope for BV Killer to wind up on Dead By Daylight all the same.
I would honestly get and learn how to play DbD JUST for the Miner if they added him
As someone who works at a facility where they use simular breathing gear, people do sound like Darth Vader when wearing such protective material.
Fun Fact: Neil Affleck, the actor that plays Axel would later on be a Director for The Simpsons
Still my favorite holiday slasher film, and the remake is surprisingly good as well! It's that rare mix of horror and coziness. But they're both completely badass!
Whenever Brandon goes "Now, you may be wondering why I'm not covering this on the relevant holiday..." in that pause I picture that bit in Scott Pilgrim where Scott jumps out the window as his roommate goes "He's not here."
"A 4th of July movie to review on thanksgiving" I got the perfect one, "Uncle Sam". Haha
5:30 Also his daughter happens to be Cree Summer, one of the ten greatest voice actors who ever lived.
I completely forgot about that! And I THINK he might have voiced Inspector Gadget at one point
I remember being freaked out by the abrupt ending as a kid, but I thought it was just maniacal laughter from the killer, then roll credits. Seemed different here … maybe part of the restored scenes?
I love the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald song! Awesome reference
At least this movie depicts a Canadian mining town more realistically than that "When Calls the Heart" series.
I love 1980s horror Valentine movies.
I like to imagine the whole movie was just based around that song- "The Ballad of Harry W-" that i wish they'd make one for Bob dylans: "The Ballad of Hollis Brown." 🤎 Folk tunes
Speaking of Canadian content, is that Gore-don Lightfoot I hear?
@@iwasanangryyoungman
Oh, let me hear....hes new to me.
Though, John McDermott (Canadian) is credited as the singer they do use some of the same inflections.
Mr. Lightfoot likes going into falsetto ("the circle is small" for instance)👍
This is one is a classic. Until recently I never paid attention to the song playing during the end credits, its a bonus.
Remember seeing the gory pics in FANGORIA and then seeing the film and asking what happened ? Great video.
Same here. Fangoria kept the gore torch burning while the MPAA slashed the eff out of these classics.
Same with Event Horizon.
Funny you should compare Don Francks to Frank Welker, as they both played Dr. Claw. Of course, Frank pretty much redubbed most of the episodes, leaving Don's Dr. Claw in only a few episodes.
The Pride of Nova Scotia is Alexander Keith's... Buddy was snorting it in the next scene.
“…I’ll still know though.”
You cannot fathom the depths of my hard drive!
Holy shit an absolute classic!!!
No way this kind of killing spree would happen in an American mining town; with our gun laws, the slasher would end up full of more holes than the mine.
Love this movie, its so Canadian and the cast of characters are all pretty likeable
This Bloody Valentine movie sure is lacking some Sam Winchester.
He was too busy saving his sister from Jason.
It’s odd that between Jason, Chucky, Freddy, Leatherface, Michael, The Cryptkeeper, Frankenstein and The Mummy, the Miner is the only movie killer I can think of that didn’t translate to pro wrestling.
What?
Bizarre observation…
wait. what wrestler is based on Chucky? I know there was a wrestler with the Jason costume. but Chucky?
@@mrgonzale0978 Mexico had one.
@@JustDavenThings cool.
this is still one of my favorite horror movies of all time. the setting, humor and who done it aspects are great. a really good script and a cast you actually give a damn about. i just got the scream factory bluray for my birthday so i can't wait to revisit it.
It's very interesting that this particular slasher movie never got a franchise of its own maybe we just an oversaturation of the market at the time. And Valentine's Day is much more important to this movie than it would be for the 2009 remake. But both versions have this wacky love triangle thing going on.
Smoked Yankee Buffalo Soldiers Honestly it does not surprise me, it's a very self contained story and I don't think there are any further stories you could follow it up with.
that wasn't a remake, that was a sequel.
@@lutherheggs451 "Why the fuck you lying ?" (Down goes Fraser)
@@justindenney-hall5875 If they could make nine direct sequels to a film where the killer was decapitated at the end, they could definitely have made a sequel to a film where the killer survived. And it's not really a Black Christmas situation where making a sequel is technically possible, but a terrible idea.
@@Talisguy No, I still don't see it.
*Fun Fact!!!* Don Francks is also the Father of Voice legend Cree Summer Francks.
In your list of holiday horror movies, I can't believe you would forget
GARBAGE DAY!
"The only hole you'll be going in is mine- I mean, the mine!"
Thought that was where you were going to go with it, lol
Anybody else expecting Don Franks to burst into the party and say, "Anybody want a beer?"
This is such a great episode
We also have one for.. "GARBAGE DAY." hahaha. (Silent night, deadly night 2.)
When a ghost just wants to be your friend : BOOZE! Ya want some Booze? How about some spirits?
I'm still waiting for horror movies based on Golden Week, Armistice Day, and Talk Like a Pirate Day.
Mad Magazine did "Arbor Day" in the eighties. It's a blueprint for slasher films.
Missed the "decapitation" gags. Go CMR retro and start throwing some of that $h!t back in. Love em! Closing song sounds like it came out of the Rankin & Bass Hobbit movies.
That's a nice haiku, but the MPAA says it's gotta be cut.
I’ve been waiting years for this one.the atmosphere in this film really makes it one of my guilty pleasures.
I saw this bit of trivia recently: The actors weren't told which of them would be the killer throughout the filming. This way, it would prevent an actor from unconsciously acting like a disguised murderer. They learned who the killer was later on during filming.
I LOVE this film. One of my favourite slasher films of all time.
My Bloody Valentine and The Prowler are severely underrated today. Like you said, very formulaic, but they take the formula and really tighten it and avoid being dull or too derivative, mostly with inventive and memorable kills.
guess I'll have to see that too.
@@SuperSwordman1 One of Tom Savini's earlier outings as far as gore goes!
Aka Rosemary's Killer.
Ah, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs... such fond memories. I got the first two episodes on VHS from the swap meet at a local John Deere show when I was a kid for a quarter. Solid show for all its oddness
Does anyone think that TJ looks like Brandon Tenold?
I knew I would not be the first one to say that.
I was gonna say Ray Liotta
Who tf is Brandon Tenold?
To be more precise: The legitimate lovechild of Brandon Tenold and Bruce Campbell!!!
Not all canucks look the same (im just kidding. They do)
Man I never thought some of these old school movies were so crazy and bizarre think about in the 80s!
Are you gonna cover the remake? I've heard people say it wasn't as good as the original, so it might be right up your alley.
Minors in 1986 were anyone under 18 too. Take my word for it, the moment I turned 18 2 years later, they changed it to 21 across the board in the US.
Don Francks was awesome as Walter in "La Femme Nikita" as Section's armorer. A way underrated series.
All these years and that’s the first time I’ve seen those edited killings! They still show the cut up version on cable here in the states. Awesome!
TCM will probably show the full film some Saturday Night. IFC might have shown it back when they aired movies instead of sitcoms
Please get either the Paramount/Lions Gate Special Edition or The Superior definitive version from Shout Factory.
I'm kind of amazed you haven't reviewed Rock & Rule yet, it seems perfect for your show: Cult classic, cheesy but awesome, virtually unknown by the larger moviegoing audience...
And Canadian! Hell, I'm surprised he hasn't done Heavy Metal!
Bloody Valenmine? Anyone? No?
Okay, I’ll show myself myself out.
When he was going through all the voice actor samples I hadn’t seen a single one…
Then Mr. Victor Creed, Sabertooth walked up and I smiled ear to ear.
Yknow these days I’ve seen enough movies to pay attention to clues and such to Kinda take a good guess how mysteries will be revealed…
The twist to this movies ending threw me for a loop and it was REFRESHING!!
Also ‘April Fools Day’ is awesome
I have both versions of This movie on Blu Ray from the Shout Factory. It contains both the 90 minute cut and the 93 minute Directors Cut.
Don Franks also did voice work on WildC.A.T.S. and Highlander: The Animated Series , while he continued to voice Sabretooth in a handful of video games such as X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, X-Men: Mutant Academy, and X-Men: Mutant Academy 2.
"BOOZE! What's the matter? Did I scare ya?"
Good one!
3:14 “Oh baby, your tube is so big!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"Now you may be wondering why am I not making this video on Valentine's Day?"
Butthead: Uh.... I dunno. Uh-huh huh huh. Uh-huh huh huh.
I hope that final bit isn't just a throwaway joke but an actual hint at doing 'Uncle Sam'
I was going to mention Uncle Sam if nobody else had.
Aw yeah, always a treat when I get to see Brandon review an actual Canadian film!
Another HILARIOUS video! Brandon - dude, PLEASE don't ever change! I LOVE your videos. They cheer me up all the time 😃
Thanks alot Brandon!! I've been wanting to see more people review this movie. I've been trying to get The Horror Geek to do it for months now.
