  • I often recommend concentrating on getting a basic pattern - blouse (bodice), skirt, pants - to fit so you have what I refer to as a "master pattern." You can use a master pattern in two ways: you can design garment variations from it, and you can use it to alter a commercial pattern. In this "Conversation About Master Patterns," Kris Haight and I explore both of these avenues of using a master pattern. Kris talks about some of her experiences, and I provide a number of concrete examples.
I also discuss in detail "proofing a pattern," which simply means making a garment from the pattern, and wearing the garment a few times. Wearing an actual garment and going about your usual activities lets you check that the garment is comfortable and functional. Perhaps you will decide to make a few adjustments. But moving forward with future garment developments and design changes, you know that you will be incorporating the fit and functionality you like. Rather than jumping to a complex design, I recommend working step-by-step with smaller design changes, so you're always utilizing and building on your prior work. Plus you get a number of new garments in your wardrobe along the way!

Sarah, I learned about your Horizontal Balance Lines from Alexandra Morgan. I also have your fitting book.I appreciate what you contribute to the home sewists community. I have also learned about making slopers/test patterns and garments to achieve the correct fit and styling before working on my master fabric. I've also learned that I look better wearing princess lines.

This was fantastic, I learned a lot! The advice about the yoke was new to me and so incredibly helpful. **I would love more information on fitting with princess seams.
