  • Do you ever wonder what size pattern to start with for a top or shirt (i.e., a bodice) that will be made from a woven fabric? And what size should you choose if your figure's proportions at the bust, waist, and hip are not the same as the patterns? Rather than using the size chart on the pattern envelope, Sarah shows you how to use the pattern's finished garment measurements when choosing the pattern size(s). Plus, she shows you how to blend between sizes so your seam and cut lines make smooth transitions.
For information on tops that will be made from knit fabrics, please see Sarah's video "How to Choose a Knit Bodice Pattern Size."

Great information. Looking forward to a video discussing changing cup size from a commercial pattern. You mentioned that they are made for a "B" cup and I am a 'D" cup.

This was absolutely what I needed. I was able to take this information to adjust a pattern of which I have made 3 muslins; changing size 2 times, changing seam allowance, all with no success. Something just wasn’t right. Your tutorial lit the lightbulb when you explained sizing, finished garment measurements and ease. I realized all I needed was to adjust the waist size. I made another muslin and it was perfect. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so very much for generously sharing your knowledge and skills, Sarah. I have your fitting book for absolute beginners, and it is good to put a voice and face to your wise advice. This was so helpful.

Very educational. I have that same pattern and have always had to make changes because my bust measurement aligns with a 14 but my hip measurement is a 16. My waist measures 35 so I'm in-between sizes. Blending is always a must for me but I live with it. I learned something new from your video and that was reducing the hip size from the outside of the lines which I would have never thought to do. Thank you!

Thank you, very helpful. Hopefully I can put it into practice for a special dress I am about to make very soon! 🤞 I also have to adjust for a shorter waist as every single pattern is made for way taller people than I am!

I'm glad this was helpful to you. It's great that you're developing a good feel for what you always need to do -- like shortening the bodice length. I hope your special dress turns out well!

How much ease at the bust would you recommend fo a jacket?

What I meant to say is this was really great. My measurements are Bust 43 1/2". waist 42", Hips 46" a larger size like this would be helpful.

Hi Cheryl -- I'll be doing a video soon about larger sizes and how it's often more straight forward to choose a smaller size (for the frame) and then do a full bust adjustment (FBA). And I'll be addressing FBAs and how to do them -- without getting them too big, which in my experience working with fuller figured gals is often what's done.

I'll be working on videos about larger cup sizes and larger sizes in the next months.

Sarah, just FYI - the volume on this and another video done about the same time is very low and I'm not able to increase it high enough. Just something to be aware of.
