Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Review | A Decent Play on a 90s JRPG

- Overall, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is good. The world is beautiful, recruiting is fun, and there are plenty of minigames to sink time into if you’d like. I just wish its story had more meat to it rather than feeling like a generic tale I’ve heard time and time again. It is good, but just don’t expect to be blown away by some epic saga that will have you on the edge of your seat. Also, get used to dying because you will, a lot. If you’re a fan of classic ’90s JRPGs, I’d recommend it, and even if you’ve never played one but like JRPGs like Octopath Traveler, you’d probably find it fun.

Review by Meg Koepp on PC/ROG Ally. Written version: www.escapistmagazine.com/eiyuden-chronicle-hundred-heroes-is-a-decent-play-on-a-classic-90s-jrpg-review/
Surprised that this review didn’t once invoke the name Suikoden 2?seeing as how it looks like and seems to play exactly like the much beloved jrpg from back in the day. Since it’s the same team that made the first couple of Suikoden games, that makes sense. I’ve been waiting on this game for years and I’m pumped that it’s finally here
Suikoden 2 is mid
@@akdang-hu4xd It's a certified classic legend
@@akdang-hu4xd your taste in games is so mid
That's understandable but at the same time I think it's good to evaluate this game standing on it's own without riding the coattails of nostalgia
@@akdang-hu4xd Play fortnite then
seriously why does modern indie just not take the story seriously in jrpgs? it's a story driven genre but they're like, nah.
Word to this. Octopath Traveller and now this - just garbage storylines. I'm playing through Chained echoes and even though all of the elements are there, they are kind of wasted on a very directionless game
@@StewNWT ya like why dont they care about this. a memorable story would be a game changer for sales i imagine from word of mouth. it needs to be a thing where they hire dedicated writers instead of writing it themselves.
To fans of Suikoden 2 saying that this game needs to be reviewed by a fan are giving a bad take. It is good that this game is being reviewed by a nonfan because I want a neutral review of this game, not one with constant throwbacks and references to the old game. If this game can't stand on its own two feet im sorry to say but it's likely not a good game. The pacing at the beginning is really bad and the overworld and dungeon explorations are empty "so far", being forced to go through that emptiness for 10 hours isn't fun. I fell asleep playing it yesterday and usually thats a rip for me on the game but I'm gonna give it a fair shot because I like the concept and I usually like this style of game. Also my condolences to you guys on the loss of the creator from my understanding this was one of their last projects but just because thats the case doesn't automatically make this a great game.
I could never get Psycho Mantis to say anything other than "You like Suikoden don't you?" even though I had an Azure dreams save too.
Same! Blew my mind the first time he said it though.
Maybe had to move that save file somewhere else so the game couldn't see it?
Damn, more Azure Dreams erasure!
A lot of the things people are pointing out as complaints or negatives, are just things that people like me actively want and look for in RPG’s. It feels like a very modern disconnect, mostly relating to attention spans.
I completely agree. I've been playing jrpgs my whole life so all the "negatives" people list don't seem like a big deal to me.
Finally, people who have the same views as myself. Seems like we're a rare breed nowadays
@@tommo21tm You're not some superior being just because you like old jrpgs, get a grip. Imagine crying just because you guys cant handle the fact the genre has modernized. The 3 of you are embarrassing xD
@craigtrish2011 Nobody said anything about being superior, put your handbag away mate. I like plenty of modern JRPGs just fine, nothing wrong with still liking the old style.
@@craigtrish2011 Whats embarrassing is you getting butthurt over this
Calling all Suikoden fans! This game hits the nostalgia button in all the right ways. It features a growing base you build up, tactical battles with tons of recruitable characters, and a sprawling narrative that feels epic. While the combat system is a bit different, it's still strategic and engaging. If you loved the heart and character building of Suikoden, this is definitely worth checking out!
Sprawling? Game literally takes less than 13 hours to beat. Hardly sprawling.
is the music any good? Does it use traditional instruments a la Miki HIgashino?
The Suikoden games also had one-on-one duels. Does this game have those too?
It's very clear this guy never played Suikoden.
And didn't have the slightest clue about history on why this game now exist.
I just scrolled over comments after 1:38
His literal comments are what Suikoden does.
@@strawverrymilkshake4139 Haha! It was rolling my eyes here too. I mean what more could he want from a story? But when he later said, "It's no Fire Emblem," when referring to the large scale battles, I just laughed.
@@johntitor4287 Truth! Those of us who loved that series is really looking forward to this game. I don't know, I think given the obvious comparisons between the two, it would have been cool if he had the opportunity to play Suikoden before writing this review. Then again, I'm not sure how readily available Suikoden is these days.
I assume this is definitely not Switch footage lol, it looks great! I'd really like to see some more footage of the Switch version tho.
I have the seame doubts about the Switch version.
Why would it not look the same on the Switch? This is not some graphic heavy looking game.
You mentioned dying alot, is this harder than octopath or other contemporary rpgs?
From what I've seen, not really just make sure you don't slack on the healing as my main character died when I thought that I could get away without healing for even a turn or two. However, I do hear that some of the later bosses can be pretty brutal.
Escapist AI reviews at its finest, no wonder everyone left
Hey if I subscribe to your patreon do I still get early access to Zero Punctuation as advertised?
remember this name: jowy atreides, cousin of paul atreides
It’s “pohl” atreides, my friend. You gonna eat that carrot? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Classic JRPG in the past DOESN'T even have fast travel!
They have. Suikoden have Viki and blinking mirror. FF have air ship.
cool, the game is hard i was hoping for that, it looks fan freaking tastic
I personally love it. It's great and a worthy successor to the Suikoden series.
@@danielligman3231hopefully it’s over 100 hours
Is it hard? I'm 3 hours in on normal and find it pretty easy. Does it pick . Some reviews say to play on hard mode
@@ChrisTobin603 think as long as suikoden?
Liked suikoden so a game like this is a must try for me. Hell, I still play game like lufia.
Finding a needle in a haystack is not difficult, it's annoying. Give me hand holding with quests markers or at least a good description.
Hi, sorry if my questions will sound odd but are you someone who appreciates when other people are authentic? Are you a meticulous person? Also, do you like to keep things clean and in their places? I'm also hearing "tattoo"... I'm asking because sometimes I get insights in my spirit and I feel led by God..
@@hiswords1715 That is really weird, because I'm hearing "Lithium". Time to get back on your meds.
No thanks, quest markers suck.
@@Tizen Damn you Tizen! I just spit water all over the place. 🤣 You got me good with that one.
Have you played elden ring? That game would be ruined if it had quest markers. If not, check it out. It may change your mind.
I find it funny that people complain about a 'generic story' that's nothing new... and then go on to praise Square's JRPG stories! Aren't Square's JRPGs loaded with generic storytelling???
Escapist has trouble with their review format. This deserves a longer review, its way too succint.
3 minute reviews are fine, this 6min review is weird, its too short and too long at the same time.
the mental gymnastics of thus comment lmao
"What?! You didn't play every single JRPG that came out 30+ years ago? How dare you review a newly released game and only reference the games you have previous experience with!"
We are discovering that rpg does not change that much but we have :) Imagine this beeing someone first Suikoden. It is not near as good but as a copy is decent. 400MB of Suikoden 2 will always win with modern GBames :)
I cannot believe that these reviews are the same length as ZPs used to be. Watching these feels like a slog, or to use ZP lingo, like passing a kidney stone.
Do you end the game fighting god as usual?
So is The Escapist video output literally just this guy Gamer Yelling the text of articles other people wrote now?
We’re just a 2 person team right now. Our plan currently is to translate site content to video (like the channel always has) and create original content with my personal views. I (Brett) do the VO for the channel mostly right now because we're a small team. But I'm hoping to include more writers from the site and new voices in the future. As for 'my' content - So far I've covered the sketchy nature of digital gaming and analyzed Stellar Blade purely from a gameplay perspective. My next video will discuss the absence of great pacing in modern games. Hope this clears things up a little and I hope you stick around!

RIP Yoshitaka Murayama, hope legacy continues on the right hand, hail suikoden
I can't wait to play
I am surprised there are people still watching this channel at all anymore given what happened. Oh well, I guess there is no account for taste.
Meh...
Instantly from the NPC characters staying frozen with no animations was one of the first indicators that this wasn't going to be a premium experience. It feels so dated in a bad way. Unicorn Overlord seemed like a game that had a retro feel in a much better way and seemed more polished and streamlined.
This was Yoshitake Murayama’s last project before he sadly passed away and he can be proud he created a gaming masterpiece and an all-time masterclass in JRPGs. 10/10 from me.
People are saying some recruits are bugged and you can miss out unless you do them perfectly. And the cooking minigame is bugged and can not be won.
Also what progression systems are there? If it’s just grinding for equipment and levels, hard pass.
Can't wait for this on game pass.
It's a Day One on gamepass, so tomorrow 😊
For some reason this reminds me of Xenogears.
dont mess with our child hood memories, this game is more than gold
My dude your childhood is not his. He doesn't owe your childhood-inducing game a good review. I will admit so far the beginning is bad. I fell asleep playing it but I'm gonna give it a fair shot though because I like the concept.
Dude come on how have you not heard of Suikoden?
perhaps he's not even born yet at that time 😆
Gen z.
@@Kerunou You're really trying to insult someone because of when they were born? How fucking embarrassing lol
No fast travel until 10 hours in is pain
remember Viki?
Teleportation girl available to recruit after certain event in the game.
@@StrawberryFieldsForeverrr I'm familiar with them but they're not something i'd play, which is why i've never touched one iirc.
Well unless you count Pokemon. :/
what a dumb take
Don’t bother. This isn’t for you.
Looks quite boring mediocre at best would probably be better if i spend my time playing unicorn overlord instead.
Unicorn Overlord is fucking fantastic. I think that's a reason why I'm having trouble liking this game so much.
Cool
I wished they would have added some mechanics to the battle system. Yes we love retro RPG's but more for the look and the writing, would not hurt to add lil more meat to battle mechanics. Especially if the mechanics allowed for character uniqueness.Added damage by pressing as your character attacks, attacks that can disrupt your enemies from attacking like in grandia. Still looking forward to get my hands on this
Sometimes, something is just perfect, and anything else would just diminish an already good thing. That’s the combat in this game.
@@Kerunou we can agree to dissagree, no such thing as a perfect game. Something can always be improved
Please enable subtitles
Bummer
"Dont unlock fast travel till 10 hours in."
I mean lucky there is fast travel at all in a game trying to embrace its retro jrpg roots.
I feel u need a suikoden fan to review this game to do it justice
So much this. The scores for this game are all over the place. And you can see a Suikoden fan in some of them a mile away
Actually I wanted to hear review from non suikoden fans
I feel like it's better if it's not a Suikoden fan but just a jrpg fan in general because a Suikoden fan might focus on how it's similar or not to Suikoden and that might alternate gamers who aren't familiar with Suikoden. A casual jrpg gamer will just want to know the game's pros and cons.
Maybe next time get it reviewed by someone who played the suikoden games...
I think it’s great that they didn’t. then people who haven’t played Suikoden can see if it is a good game besides nostalgia and references to Suikoden
Is this Golden Sun inspired RPG?
This is inspired by Suikoden (same creator). Sea of Stars is the indie RPG people say is inspired by Golden Sun.
This review disrespects suikoden fans with all his recent game references. He doesnt even know what the game represents.
“Unlock fast travel until 10 hours in the game”
Dude, we unlock the mirror in suikoden like 20hours in and never complained about exploring the worlds going back and forth.
Suikoden is not a good game in today's standards. People would even call it garbage. Put it beside something persona 3 reload or the new yakuzas. It's dogshit. There's no need to mention something that came out in the last stone age.
@@akdang-hu4xdno it isn’t, I’ve played those games and I still think Suikoden has some better games than those
I think it’s important to review a game as neutral as it can be. Reviewing it as a stand alone experience is important so people like you will buy anyways and people like me who didn’t play Suikoden won’t buy it
Suikoden fans live in their own past-bubble and can't process an criticisms, just as the Shenmue crowd who still cope because of Shenmue 3. It's best to ignore them and let them think that this is the best new jrpg ever. But then, they also do their best to attack every Eiyuden reviewer who dares not to mention Suikoden 2 every 15 seconds
@@xNachtmahRx okay but shenmue 3 is actually bad though lmao
suikoden 1 and 2 put this game to shame. which is sad cause i had high hopes for it and saw how it was inspired by suikoden.
Looks half baked.
I am so disappointed. This game looks great when it was first announced. Its downgraded.
False.
Male protag only? You cant play as a girl?
Always been that way for Suikoden games except IIRC for Suiko 3
Not every game should give you a choice of protagonist.
Games have narratives and in that narrative, I think it’s important your character sometimes be pre-determined.
Want a choice, go play something else. This isn’t for you. This isn’t that kind of game.
@@Kerunou 90% Jrpg have male protag, this is a problem.
@@zerodexo7932 no it's not
Boooo for this review dislike
Mid
I respect the grind. Keep it up.
Another mid game
Hot take, troll.
For the normies, yes. For those who enjoy suikoden games or jrpg games, then it's a great game.
@@Rucnas a lot of people enjoy junk food. Doesn't make it great.
@@akdang-hu4xdthis game clearly isn’t for you, doesn’t make it bad. You’re just not the target audience
@@akdang-hu4xdDescribing a JRPG as junk food, amazing.
That’s a laugh, considering most modern games are pasteurized, sterile, fast food nonsense for people with zero common sense nor an attention span.
You’ve lost the plot. Work on your analogy a little bit. Clearly you’ve never played a real game with any sort of worth or depth, ever.
JRPG with mediocre story-telling? Colored me surprised.
Saying this while subbed to Esports is crazy.
