Suikoden II is one of the greatest JRPGs of all time, in my opinion, and you couldn't keep me away from this game by saying "it's so old school it doesn't have modern quality of life improvements" because neither does Suikoden II and I've found it kinda silly seeing some reviews where people complain about that. That's not a bug, to me, that's a feature.

The game look good. And I enjoyed the old school games. I see alot of people here talking about the localization and how bad it is. I've seen some of the comparisons from the true translation to the localized version and it honestly doesn't seem that bad. However I would push back on a couple of things. The guy that worked on this game's localization said something to the effect of they need to change certain things specifically because certain Japanese sensibilities would be considered offensive in the West. First, I'm in the West and have been playing Japanese games pretty much my entire life and would prefer that if they have something offensive to say, that I get to know what it is for myself. Second these people do not actually care at all about being offensive, they do it all the time. Many of them actually seem to revel in the idea of making people feel as offended as possible. They just like being able to decide who it is ok to offend and who it is not ok to offend. They smear people and call them names all the time. They are very selective see. But for them to say that they want to shield people from offensive content is a bad joke. They don't care about that at all. If they meant what they say, then it would be universally applied. And that is definitely not what is happening. Sometimes though, these things do get a little blown out of proportion. And I still want to pick this game up. I am a sucker for old school Japanese style games.

I didn't know it was going to be Yoshitaka Murayama's last (though he did leave a story outline for a sequel to this, apparently). It makes me happy to see this game is doing so well and getting so much attention. That bug is a HUGE letdown. Though, I will play it before they patch it simply because I know I won't get everyone on my first playthrough. Great video and i agree with your frustrations over the localizations. Its sadly been happening frequently in both japanese games and anime.
It might continue as well since companies like Namco have made statements approving of 'updating language to appeal to the west' for their games. Its annoying since i don't like english dubs and now i can't even enjoy the subtitles without it giving me western nonsense.

Im not loving it, which sucks because this has been one of my most anticipated games for years. There are way too many load screens, way too many purposeful slow downs like the forced wait when switching tabs in the menu or that 1-2 second wait between the Fight option appearing at the beginning of the turn and being able to press it. The dialogue is cringe. Random battles are practically unacceptable at this point. The camera purposefully obscures things on the map, forcing you to walk to every single corner to see if theres treasure, getting irritated to death by random battles. The combat options are extremely limited and theres a surprising sparseness to voicelines in combat.

    It's a fantastic game.
I will say that the two weakest aspects of it are war scenarios and localization.
War combat is very bare bones. They could have taken inspiration from existing tactical RPGs. Maybe that's just me?
And the localization is causing controversy because of recent issues with translators (inserting their own views rather than attempt to translate it faithfully) and companies like "Sweet Baby, Inc." Those who can read and speak Japanese will have no issues.

@@zaciroth There are lines where it's pretty obvious the localizers did what they wanted.
For example, there is one line where a character just says "Heeh..." but the localizers inputted dialogue. Mind you, that is one of several examples I found, and I'm 5 hours into the game. I'm the type of gamer who is okay with translations IF they stay true to the original's vision, by the way. If they take too many liberties, that's where it becomes a problem. Lian, in Japanese, is your typical upbeat female character. She's very similar to Nanami from Suikoden II. However, the localizers cranked her annoyance up to 20/10.
I recommend keeping it on Japanese dub. If you can read Japanese, I recommend keeping it on both. That way, it's as true to Murayama's vision as it gets. Perhaps that's just me, though.

Aside from some technical issues on Switch, I think it's just a question of expectations.
It's got a pretty damn straight forward story that unfolds pretty slowly. But that's par for the course for old school JRPGs. The art direction is basic, the music sounds as expected and the combat is simple and easy. Some people would read those as good things. Just don't expect a super original game that's going to challenge you. It's more like a cosy, familiar feeling game with a bunch of characters to find and recruit. If that sounds good to you, you'll probably like it.

    • @jmporkbob
      @jmporkbob Před 27 dny +4

It's not required. Rising is more an introduction to the world, lore, and some of the characters (and will probably get you to like its main 3 chars; it certainly did for me).
What you get from transferring save is a rune that is from early mid game (honestly I didn't even use it, it wasn't that preferrable). Also the names that you give the weapons of the main 3 characters get transferred over, as well as the name you give the town specialty. You also get the tower in the town transferred over, but I have not yet made it to the town from Rising in this game, so I dont know what it does.

Not really. You get a couple bonuses for having a save file for the game when you start a new game in Hundred Heroes. You get a Clock Tower in your eventual base, a rune, and can carry over names of weapons for a few characters. It's safe to say you probably won't notice these bonuses if you didn't have them.
Although it's a fun game and fairly short. You'll probably go mad trying to 100% it though.... Seriously almost all the extra side quests are collection and grinding in old areas, and there's like 5+ that pop up damn near anytime you do something. Only a hamdful of hero combos are more useful than just having the 2+ characters separately basic attack, and most magic spells are powerful than basic attacking too.

Yeah this game is a 9/10 so far. I was worried after all the reviewers I follow and said they were fans all had different pros and cons. I have to say there are no load times on steam and it's super fast. So when I see people complaining about quality of life improvements I think they have been overblown. Switch Verizon does sound like it needs a patch.
Otherwise any complaint I've seen about this game really comes off as whining. I think people have just become too used to newer crappier rpgs that just give you everything off the bat in menus. I loved the star ocean remake but the "qol" changes really killed my interest in replying as well. Felt like the game was playing itself and just checking off accomplishments and I didn't earn anything. I have seen people complaining about your inventory only holding 30 items, but they literally give you your vault from the very start to full up to your hearts content. First couple Suikodens were all about planning. I personally love some of the dungeons in this game (haven't said that in a few suikodens) and with the low encounter rate I haven't found it frustrating at all. This is old school gamer and suikoden delight so far.

So I've encountered a couple of problems on Switch (I don't know if they're exclusive) that are annoying enough for me to not play it.
    1. You cannot use Auto-Advance, it works in voiced cutscenes but if you try to talk to NPC's with it, then it closes the dialogue box before it's typed out, meaning you constantly have to toggle it between cutscenes and exploration making you have to try and guess where cutscenes are triggered.
    2. It takes a good 10 seconds to load random battles which REALLY breaks the flow of the game. I know it's an indie title but they've had some good funding and it's 2024.
These are minor grievances for most, I know. But they personally annoyed me enough within the first half an hour that I had to put it down. I hope they patch it up because I've been excited for this for years.

That's a pretty harsh statement @12:59. This is clearly a QA issue that was missed, which is bound to happen with a kind of project like this. It can even happen with AAA titles as well; it's just a shame it had to be related to character recruitment, which is super important in these games to achieve the best ending. What compounds this even more is by having over 100 characters, so... Yeah, I can see how problems can happen. But to suggest people not buy the game because of it or until it's actually patched I think is a little harsh to say the least. It will be fixed.

Looks solid but I'll probably be leaving this and Metaphor Re:Fantazero as Christmas pickups as cash is tight and the only other must buy day 1 games I have left for this year are Trails through Daybreak in July and Ys 10 sometime this fall (assuming it's not delayed to 2025). I'm also currently playing FF7 Rebirth (bro's PS5/copy so had to wait till he was finished, on chapter 9 now), finish up FFXVI (about to go to Odin, same situation as Rebirth though I delayed it a bit due to Trails into Reverie and Nayuta coming out last year as well), Octpath 2 (a game I got this past Christmas), and Unicorn Overlord (one of the 4 must have day 1 pickups for me this year alongside the above 2 mentioned games and Granblue Relink) so I won't really be getting to it anytime soon anyway as those will probably take me up to Daybreak's release to finish all of them.
I also want to get the game on Switch and from other videos I've watched about the game on the console it's having some issues so waiting for now also won't hurt as that may mean they'll fix the performances issues on the console (if it's just the game's locked to 30 fps or something like that (not even sure of the frame rate tbh and don't really care that much...I've been fine with 30 fps in most Tales games as long as they're stable...worst case in that series was snowy regions in the Xillia games) it's livable but gonna assume they mean frame drops, lag, and the like) as well as the bug you mentioned and any other that may exist you/others may not know about right now.
