  • There is some uncertainty about the title "Nimrod". I don't know if Sir Edward Elgar was referring to the biblical figure in the Book of Genesis and Books of Chronicles. Historians have failed to match Nimrod with any historically attested figure. In today's terms Nimrod refers to a tyrant or a skillful hunter. In modern North American English the term "nimrod" is often used to mean a dimwitted person.
Nimrod is from "Enigma Variations", (1899) one of the greatest pieces of all English orchestral works. This arrangement is by Byron Fogo and performed on 8 - string guitar by Daniel Estrem.

Wonderful! A beautiful song, and one of my favourites. Discovered this song from my dad who also loves it. Thank you for blessing us with this gorgeous rendition!

    Good Afternoon Daniel,
What a super piece and one that has some rather coincidental connections to me.
Our very first black Labrador came from a very smart pedigree line of working gundogs and his Kennel name was Nimrod. All the puppies from his litter were named after a movement in the Enigma variations. However his pet name was Ted.
Secondly variation number IV is called W.M.B. after William Meath-Baker. I knew WMBs granddaughter, Lucinda as she was married to John, a friend of mine! Both Lucinda and John are now dead as they were very old. After another Labrador called Ted we are on a Labrador called Alf. The circle of life goes on.
All very six degrees of separation I know, but I do like a coincidence!
Nimrod is a very emotional piece and stirs the heart of any Brit. It is always played at our Remembrance Day events so I expect to hear the military Bands of the household division play it next week. I will be at our local Remembrance service so I will catch the grand one on the TV.
We didn't quite get blown away in the storm but it was pretty unpleasant. We live on high ground but a lot of poor souls on the south coast were flooded out and parts of Europe were hit hard too.
I doo hope the snows are not too bad this winter for you guys. I think you lot suffered enough last Winter.
    Keep Safe and Keep Playing
    Clive

      Thanks Clive!
You certainly have connections with the Enigma variations. I too am fond of coincidences unlike a lot of the secret agent heroes that I read about before hitting the sack. They are always quoted as "there's no such thing as coincidence."
The weather has been OK here the last few days. Sorry about the south coast floods...

Very lovely Dan. I must ask, with you playing guitar and lute, what are your nails likes? You are get such a wonderful tone here! Would love any insight you can provide as I am a classical guitarist who is looking into getting a lute as well.

Thanks! my nails vary from short to long.. right now they're longer than usual. I think you just need to find what you're comfortable with and record yourself to see what the machine tells you.

I have always associated Nimrod as a hunter in the Elgar context. One of my favourite pieces, seems strange without the "haunting" constant violins and cellos. Interesting though, well done.

thanks, yes it's a bit strange when those constant strings aren't there.

@danbluedeer It certainly evokes mental images of Edgar's beloved Malvern Hills, where he lived and was, no doubt, inspired to write his music. In a blatant act of shameless self-promotion, I present an opportunity for you to have a glimpse of those hills (more a long high ridge in an otherwise flatish area) in a video of mine, shot a few years ago when flying in the area. They feature from 4:40 to 7:10 if you don't want to see the whole video (select 1080p of course).
