I just come from Beerbiceps podcast of Vikram Sampath because CZcams recommended it. The difference between this host and Ranveer is huge. Prakhar knows what he is talking and gives his own opinions, questions and carry the conversation forward in a meaningful way. Whereas Ranveer just ask questions and does interviews in the name of podcast. When it comes to his opinions, he resorts to conspiracy theories, predictions and fantasy. He would bring aliens and spirits into a conversation of economics and political science! Anyway, I think I am gonna read his book. Great content.

These problems in the ancient Indian historiography led to the colonial notion that ancient Indians had no sense of history and lacked historical consciousness.

In India scientific interpretation of history was actually started as early as early 20th century. Men who led such were - Jadunath Sarkar, RC Majumder, Rakhal Das Banerjee etc(most of them from Bengal). But from 1960s things started changing , they were soon replaced by a historians who were influenced by "Marxist Historiography " and oy they are popular and taught today. We need to restart our "Scientific interpretation of History " and abolish Marxist Historiography. Dr. BR Ambedkar had positive views regarding Marx and also stressed the fact that Marxists are ignorant when it comes to understanding of history.
Basically, there's a kind of global acceptance of the Marxist view of historiography. This is because history has always had religion contributing to it massively, moreover, Marxists are generally believed to be free from nationalist and jingoist tendencies. So, they're supposed to offer a neutral point of view of the past events. With India, there has been a twin problem. Colonialism + Marxists. Colonialists have always undermined the Indian people and labeled them with a racist identity which was characterized by inferiority to the Whites. They even claimed to have brought "Civilisation" to India. According to them, we were just a bunch of barbarics fighting amongst ourselves. With Marxists, the problem has always been with the formation of India. They don't sanction the creation of this country as a democratic republic. The socialists in Indira Gandhi cabinet made her add the word "Socialist" in the Preamble. Prior to that, with the establishment of JNU, Indira Gandhi allowed the Marxists to get a control over the academia. Hence you have the likes of RS Sharma, Bipan Chandra, Romila Thapar, Irfan Habib, Satish Chandra, etc. writing the NCERT books for you.
Bhakti ras or devotional elements has been added over time to scriptures, much in last millenia. So many things that you may read as itihasa may not be exactly how the orignally author would have composed. The poetic element is always there. For example Shri Rama is described as a Human being by Maharishi Valmiki (not in the 1st & last khand which are a later additions).

Many words for each object (prabhakar, bhaskar, surya etc) is not arbitrary but recognises subjectivity in perception. If you are answering questions prakhar: How do we separate the art and the context or history behind it or we don't and just see it as a specimen of what it depicts? I was thinking about Taj Mahal and other islamic monuments which as beautiful as they are have a history of human barbarism; with Taj Mahal being the burial of Shah Jahan and we Indians paying visit to one of our most barbaric ruler.
I'll tell you one intersting fact. The Wahhabis and Salafis have always wanted to demolish the Taj Mahal. In fact, they would go on to destroy every building that's ever been constructed as a part of Islamic architecture, including the Kaba. They believe God, and therefore Islam, can't be represented through any building, shrine, painting, etc.
Imagine you record history in several forms like normal records, poetry and inscriptions in temples. During foreign invasions, normal records would be the easiest to destroy. So, how about this theory that we only have recorded history as poems and other forms because the regular normal records were destroyed because they were easily identified.
Really wonderful informative discussion between you, Prakhar & Vikram. But, there is a bit of correction needed- the Ahoms came from Burma (present day Myanmar, and not Chinese). In fact Su-Ka-Phaa was a Burmese noble who molded his own Burmese culture with the local Assamese(Oxomiya) Santana culture to give rise to the present Oxomiya culture. Also, Vaishnavism in Manipur was introduced by Shantidas Gosai from Sylhet to King Pamheiba of Manipur in the 17th century.

In India scientific interpretation of history was actually started as early as early 20th century. Men who led such were - Jadunath Sarkar, RC Majumder, Rakhal Das Banerjee etc(most of them from Bengal).
But from 1960s things started changing , they were soon replaced by a historians who were influenced by "Marxist Historiography " and oy they are popular and taught today.
We need to restart our "Scientific interpretation of History " and abolish Marxist Historiography.
Dr. BR Ambedkar had positive views regarding Marx and also stressed the fact that Marxists are ignorant when it comes to understanding of history.
Basically, there's a kind of global acceptance of the Marxist view of historiography. This is because history has always had religion contributing to it massively, moreover, Marxists are generally believed to be free from nationalist and jingoist tendencies. So, they're supposed to offer a neutral point of view of the past events. With India, there has been a twin problem. Colonialism + Marxists. Colonialists have always undermined the Indian people and labeled them with a racist identity which was characterized by inferiority to the Whites. They even claimed to have brought "Civilisation" to India. According to them, we were just a bunch of barbarics fighting amongst ourselves. With Marxists, the problem has always been with the formation of India. They don't sanction the creation of this country as a democratic republic. The socialists in Indira Gandhi cabinet made her add the word "Socialist" in the Preamble. Prior to that, with the establishment of JNU, Indira Gandhi allowed the Marxists to get a control over the academia. Hence you have the likes of RS Sharma, Bipan Chandra, Romila Thapar, Irfan Habib, Satish Chandra, etc. writing the NCERT books for you.
Bhakti ras or devotional elements has been added over time to scriptures, much in last millenia. So many things that you may read as itihasa may not be exactly how the orignally author would have composed. The poetic element is always there.
For example Shri Rama is described as a Human being by Maharishi Valmiki (not in the 1st & last khand which are a later additions).

Indians set most knowledge to poetry as it was very easy to memorise what was chanted or sung. Many words for each object (prabhakar, bhaskar, surya etc) is not arbitrary but recognises subjectivity in perception. Depending on whether the Sun is seen as 'bright' or full of rays, etc, the names differed The idea of one objective truth in science is rooted in Abrahamic idea of one objective Truth & God. How do we separate the art and the context or history behind it or we don't and just see it as a specimen of what it depicts?
I was thinking about Taj Mahal and other islamic monuments which as beautiful as they are have a history of human barbarism; with Taj Mahal being the burial of Shah Jahan and we Indians paying visit to one of our most barbaric ruler.
I'll tell you one intersting fact. The Wahhabis and Salafis have always wanted to demolish the Taj Mahal. In fact, they would go on to destroy every building that's ever been constructed as a part of Islamic architecture, including the Kaba. They believe God, and therefore Islam, can't be represented through any building, shrine, painting, etc.

Imagine you record history in several forms like normal records, poetry and inscriptions in temples. During foreign invasions, normal records would be the easiest to destroy. So, how about this theory that we only have recorded history as poems and other forms because the regular normal records were destroyed because they were easily identified.

Really wonderful informative discussion between you, Prakhar & Vikram. But, there is a bit of correction needed- the Ahoms came from Burma (present day Myanmar, and not Chinese). In fact Su-Ka-Phaa was a Burmese noble who molded his own Burmese culture with the local Assamese(Oxomiya) Santana culture to give rise to the present Oxomiya culture. Also, Vaishnavism in Manipur was introduced by Shantidas Gosai from Sylhet to King Pamheiba of Manipur in the 17th century.
