  • NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode, we continue our way along the wonderful Bridgewater Canal taking in the sights and scenery as we go. We switch from a semi-rural setting to a much more urban one, past the graffiti and abandoned shopping trolleys and onto the Barton Aqueduct which towers over the Manchester Ship Canal and should therefore be a real treat...but it doesn't turn out that way sadly!

    What a treat this vlog was. 😍 Maybe not such a pretty stretch of canal due to inconsiderate canalside abusers, who treat the canal as a waste receptacle. But I guess it wouldn't be difficult for Peel Holdings to organise a clean up every couple of years.
    My favourite bit of this vlog (I'll write this quietly so that Sue doesn’t find out) was the facial expressions that appeared on Elliott 's face as Sue was expressing her thoughts about stuff... 😂
    She twigged on though. She knows you too well Elliott.
    Thanks for another interesting vlog.
    BTW, was that a ferret someone was walking along the towpath on a lead? It could only happen in Lancashire. ❤

      Thanks Harry - glad you enjoyed it!
      Sue says you are now in trouble by the way 🤣🤣
      As for the furry beast at the end, it was indeed although I have to admit that I thought that was a Yorkshire thing rather than Lancashire but, as a Bristolian, I’m impartial 🤣🤣

      @NarrowEscape1 Oh no! I have upset Sue. I'm on the naughty step until the next vlog, where I promise I'll be nice, nice, nice. ❤️

      🤣🤣 like you say you just start to understand each other so even though she can’t see through me head (…can she??) she knows exactly what I will be doing - spooky!!
      She has also just told me that I am completely wrong on the Ferret thing - that is a Lancashire thing I am reliably told so you’re right on that one 👍
      Catch you on the next one Harry!

      It was such a shame for Sue. It would normally be a struggle to get her to take the tiller over an aqueduct that high (it feels even higher than it is up there) but she actually offered so that I could take in the view. She then gets ‘that’ experience 😡Peel Holdings!
      Hey ho, onward and upwards we go and hope to see you on the next one 👍

      Must be slightly weird seeing this on the video? We thought it was great seeing the people out there enjoying their fishing and how cute of the young lad with his magnet and gear…!

      We don’t like to rant too much but we did see a few pictures someone posted up about their journey across the aqueduct in 2013 I think it was and it looked fabulous! 10 years later and you almost question whether it’s been properly checked for safety? Corporate greed.
      Anyway, we made it but 😡🤬😡😡

    Hooray for Sue! Sometimes you just have to speak up to be heard and I'm with Sue about those canoes. They see you coming and yet they wait until the very last second to move their craft~then they move back to the center of the canal. It's just enough to un-nerve a person. Next time hit that horn until they clear. 📯🛶😂
    That canal is horrible, very trash laden. So sad the magnet fishers do all of that work and the Bridge-water canal owners thumb their nose at them by not carting it away. Shame on Bridge-water, shame on the Barton Aqueduct and all of the trash. If it were me traveling the canals, the Bridge-water would not be on my list, and I wouldn't purchase a separate license for a limited 10 days a year, either!
    My dear husband, Michael knows how Sue suffers with vertigo, he too had to look away as you were filming around from the Barton Aqueduct. Has Sue been tested for 'Meniere's disease'? It's an inner ear problem.
    Hope you both are well, take care and we'll be tuning in next time ~🤗💕🐾 Lacy, Mike & Hamish

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 7 měsíci

      Hey you guys. The problem with blasting your horn too much at them is that they then fall in and become even more of a problem!
      Suppose we all have to share the same space, which is fine but people who aren’t boaters seem to have a different sense of their own mortality. We’ve had all sorts including rowing boats (the ones that travel backwards) heading right across your path even though you have blown your horn before the junction here their club exit is.
      They are in a 25kg plastic tub and we are in a 15 tonne steel boat…go figure!!
      As for Sue’s ear thing she hasn’t been tested no, but we do know she is suffering from an ear infection right now so think much can be attributed to that.

    Brilliant video loved it...
    Magnet fishing 1 ton a week 😮 not a chance its not easy to get that much out i think its just they get loads out not tons.
    Ive done the magnet fishing with Millie magnet 🧲 😀.
    Tis a great hobby and clears no end of stuff out of the water especially those dead shopping trollies 😅
    Magnet i use is the beast and yes its huge lol.
    Ferret on a lead something you dont see often.
    Have seen a guy moored up in brinklow with two on his boat, he has to be careful whdn theyre outside incase they slip and fall in canal.
    Aquaduct sickness 😷 hey dont let that get in the way you participated fully just needed to get kettle on eh...😊
    Im unsure sometimes if you actually know where you are 😅
    Smell of kellogs o yer get me some of that.
    Loved the views as always, was it paddle boarders in Sues way 😀
    Never understood why on the canal! water is filthy to fall into and stinks 😒 also look at the metal junk the magnet fishers pull out you dont want to land on that junk eh.
    Stick to kaysking i say.
    Great trip enjoy see you next time same time next week lol
    All the best stay safe have fun keep cruising 😅

      Millie pulled an old gun out kids toy.
      Loads of stuff.
      I was on a youtube video with blazing magnets in rugby great day with them find it on CZcams I will see if I can add link..
      Me and millie have few video on my CZcams channel kev the Brinklow kayaker...
      It's a lottery pulling stuff out the canals..
      Magnet wished the river that flows past Warwick Castle 🏰 on my kayak that was eventful.
      Was told by workers that a bomb went off by the road bridge years ago and army divers were down on river bed checking for more.

    Awful about that rubbish one thing I hate is littering of any kind just no dam need we were told in a bin or take it home Sue hope you ok now 🌺🌷🌹sure you be pleased to hear our heating got fixed has urgent due to my heart failure it was a twelve week wait just sorry for others tc now 🤗🤗👍

      Glad to hear you got the heating sorted guys but you shouldn’t have to be poorly to have it fixed quickly…it’s a basic need 😢
      We are with you on the littering. Sue will often be found walking up and down the towpath with her trusty litter picker picking up other peoples cr4p. It makes my blood boil!!
      Glad you’re sorted though guys. The fire is on here on JOSH, nice and toasty 😃

  • @tangs167
    @tangs167 Před 7 měsíci +1

    Nicely done, hope you have a good weekend. Question for you, how does any water that goes down Josh's steps get removed? Does it simply drain into the engine bilge? My new project has the same step setup and, since taking the floor up and the ballast out, it appears that any water drains directly into the boat!! I intend sealing this up and drilling a hole in the bottom step.

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Thanks K. I have to say I actually enjoyed this one when editing it. We saw so much that day and had a bit of banter along the way.
      To answer your step question yes, exactly that. Anything on the steps goes into the engine bay and needs pumping out. Luckily, as far as we can tell the engine bay and interior bilges aren’t connected on JOSH although that has its own problems too of course!!
      It would be good if the bottom step on JOSH had a channel which fed to a skin fitting and out into the cut but that’s not the system.
      You can imagine just how much water used to collect in the engine bay before lovely Paul and Marie from Fjord Manufacturing made our stern cover for us?!!! Honestly it’s been an absolute game changer. I don’t think I could sleep at nights night listening to all the rain coming into the engine bay anymore.

    • @tangs167
      @tangs167 Před 7 měsíci

      @@NarrowEscape1 Thanks Elliott, I might be able to fashion something to do just that, I'll certainly be stopping the water draining onto the inside!!

    I'm wondering how things went for you during this last great heavy rain and high winds that swept across Great Britain.

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 7 měsíci +1

      We’re OK, thanks for asking. The rain has been a pain because of a few reasons and one of them is that JOSH is a ‘classic’ boat so things like his windows don’t fit like posher, fancier boats so we need to have drip trays under the windows we know are susceptible.
      Equally we need to be mindful of the rain that gets into the engine bay and regularly getting bay out and the wind, my word, that has been a pain. We can tie JOSH up tightly at night and by morning he is a foot or so out in the canal. That’s all wind pressure.
      Sodding great though 😎👍🤣

    I have question about the future, what is going to happen come winter time when the canals freeze ,are you going to stay on Jose til the ice melts or move to where it doesn't freeze, I have seen some boats frozen in the canals, or is putting it in a marina a viable option, just curious. Normally we are a foot deep in snow here(Michigan) and the ice on the Great Lakes makes it mandatory to pull boats out of the water or be crushed by the ice,but this year as of January 5th 2024 ,absolutely no snow and open water everywhere. People out every day in their fishing boats fishing for Walleye ,Pike,and Perch. I take my UTV (side by side) vehicle to the marina by my house to watch all the boats going in and out of the water just Crazy Warm el-Nino Winter. Any as I always say "Keep pushing on"💪💪✌✌👍👍

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 7 měsíci

      Hi there and what an interesting comment. We are no going off to google what a Walleye is 👍
      As for the canals here getting frozen in is just part of it. It doesn’t really matter where you are although we are in a VERY Wintery spot.
      Getting frozen in is just part of the joys. You wake up and find the boat is at a slightly weird angle. Usually when you get up the boat rocks and suddenly you subconsciously notice it doesn’t anymore…the complete opposite of when your first start out.
      Usually rocking side to side and/or bashing the ice around the hull frees you but only for a while.
      It hasn’t frozen all that much though this year. Sure we’ve had some but nothing like what we expected. The wind and rain levels though…they’ve been another thing altogether but then we received a message from a subscriber today who is based in Japan where the earthquake hit and that puts it all in perspective!!!
      Right…off to do some Googling now…
      Ps we LOVE your messages because they always contain things we knew nothing of/about 👍

      Thank you so much for the kind words I appreciate that.👏 I try to ask questions I would ask you if I ever met you both,so I was just curious of how hard of a freeze the UK gets.When I lived in Germany when I was younger, I noticed that the 4 seasons were nearly identical to here in Michigan and I know a lot of the rivers that flowed to the Sea never freeze because of tidal flows but here in Michigan you can have ice out to 50 -60 miles until you hit open water, people drive snowmobiles ATVS and in some cases trucks out on the ICE to put up their shanties to Ice Fish in,every year across from the marina I told you about the Coast Guard Station sends up the Helicopter to fish out people trapped on the ICE flows,gets pretty crazy, and in the spring the Coast Guard Cutters start breaking the ICE in late February early March in some cases even earlier then that. For instance around Detroit /Chicago or at the 5 mile long Mighty Mackinaw Bridge that is between the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the Lower Peninsula .As I said before this year is crazy warm so I was out early today hitting golf balls off the beach, we have a Family of 3 Bald Eagles that have a nest about 400 yards down the beach and it's amazing how loud they screech and just how massive they really are ,they hang in the trees and watch for Walleye and Perch in the shallows and swoop down and grab them ,just majestic to watch them.Well sorry to rattle on,take care and as always -"keep pushing on 💪💪✌✌👍👍

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 7 měsíci

      Oh wow - well our winters don’t tend to be that bad, or good depending on how you view it.
      The rivers tend not to freeze so much but of course still water like the canals do. We certainly don’t do any ice driving or snowmobile cruising that’s for sure!!
      The Bald Eagles sound amazing, what a treat to be able to see them!!
