  • NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode we set off from beautiful Barrowford and tackle the 7 locks ahead of us before popping up the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towards Burnley. We have to say it really doesn't impress with all the weed, litter, junk and general detritus in the canal. Numerous trips down the weed hatch are required and the locals lob insults for fun! Is this the worst canal town in the country? Either way, we can't wait to get out of here!!
    JOURNEY - BARROWFORD to BRIERFIELD to NELSON to REEDLEY HALLOWS to BURNLEY
    CANALS - LEEDS AND LIVERPOOL CANAL
    We hope you'll SUBSCRIBE and support the channel and join us on our big adventure as we learn, laugh and cry our way around the UK canal network. If you've ever wondered what life on the canals is like told without scripting or acting then we're sure you'll love what we video. It's authentic. It's real. It's told how it is with a bit of banter and occasional silliness thrown in for free!
    We'll be sure to post new videos every week and look forward to taking you on our journey. See you on the next one!

      Hi there Scott. Hope everyone is well on your side of the pond?
      It was a scary moment wasn’t it but some quick action got it sorted.
      I think my three shouted words helped everyone understand what needed to be done yeah? 🤣🤣🤣
      Needless to say we were VERY careful in this lock this time around!

      Isn’t it a shame. Perhaps the problem is a few start it and then weak onlookers see the behaviour and think that it is OK to behave like that?
      We can’t wait for the Anderton Boat Lift either. To think people back then designed and built that - staggering.
      Bring it on!!

    Well, on a few previous vlogs I did warn you about the canal through Burnley.
    There are more footballs and supermarket trolleys in the cut per mile than anywhere else in the country.
    This stretch of canal could be an asset to the town. Instead, the locals treat it like a cess pit, and it is the arsehole of Lancashire.
    I have travelled along here and have yet to get through without a problem. Looking at your vlog, it looked relatively tidy.
    Regarding the Barrowford lock that leads out under the stone bridge and then the motorway bridge, if after passing under the stone bridge, look back and you can see a padlock attached to the bridge wall by the towpath. This is/was a geocache with the hint of "You can see the lock from here".
    Obviously you can see the lock gates, but need to look at the padlock to find the cache. Very crafty.😮
    It was placed by a local geocacher called Grufty Milo.
    Anyway, what can I say about this vlog?
    Not a lot really. I anticipated that it would be depressing. But the sinking narrowboat incident brought some drama, but not something that one would wish upon anyone.
    Move on you two, nothing to see here. ❤

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 11 měsíci +1

      You did indeed Harry. We sooo wanted Burnley to be OK and just pass without incident but it just couldn’t help itself. Maybe on another day it would be OK and we wouldn’t have any issues?
      💪 on the geocache - we should take a look another time because we didn’t see a padlock but then given our previous experience with these locks we are concentrating on other things!
      Sorry if it was depressing but as you certainly know by now we just tell it how it is 100%.
      As for the sinking boat we did consider not covering it but we only found out it was ‘the boat’ after editing and well, it happened so we covered it. SOOOOOO glad the couple got out OK but such a sad story.

      @NarrowEscape1 In my previous life as a Fire Service Officer, I have been involved I several canal rescues.
      Once, when a horse and rider fell into the canal. We had to get lines (not called ropes) onto the horse's bridle and guide it down the canal for half a mile yo a slip way. It swam well and walked up the ramp to be checked over by a vet.
      Another time was a sunken canal boat. Several large air bags were used inflated from air cylinders whilst using water pumps to remove the water. It worked a treat. There have been other incidents where people have died and needed rescue, but I won't go into detail here.
      I am pleased the poor folk on that sunken narrowboat escaped unharmed.
      Take care you two. ❤️

    This video reminded me of why I left Burnley at 16 years old, a 24 year Army career followed and now I live in beautiful Thailand. I went back to Burnley twice in my adult life, it's a venomous and dangerous town. That said, there are some beautiful parts on the outskirts, you wouldn't see from the canal. At 7 years old, I fell into the canal and almost drowned. My mother immediately took me to swimming classes. Otherwise thanks for sharing, pitty the canal is so polluted with crap.

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 5 měsíci

      Well, we always tell things as they are in our videos and if it was a lovely journey then we would be able to say so.
      You can see from the Straight Mile so lovely scenery out on the edges of the town but the canal is full of rubbish (which makes you think the streets won’t be up to too much) and some, we hasten to add “some” of the characters walking along the towpath rank well down on the ‘nicest we’ve crossed on the canal netwrok’. Shame given Burnley’s industrial heritage.
      At least you are out now and living the dream by all accounts?!! Nice, nice, nice.

    Liked the tree hugging Sue whilst you were helmsman !
    You've been on the LL for quite some time now
    I take it not so much by choice but because of CRT repairs needed.
    Very very true Elliot you cannot ever take for granted safe passage through locks.
    We got stuck similarly on lock 1 of the Llangollen canal before the CRT demolished it and re built it ( the lock walls were falling in )
    Of course the rudder catching on a sill turns your boat into a submarine. Which can be and tragically has been fatal in the past
    I trust you are both well
    Safe journey travels both.
    Love from Sussex.
    NB Burnley teenagers clueless as to the historical perspective of the canal passing through their town.
    So sad the schools and colleges don't teach the students responsibility to look after the canal
    Moreover Burnley Council should spend rate payers money on keeping the canal free of rubbish

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Hi David - 🤣🤣 tree hugging Sue!
      Yes we have been on the LL for a while. The Wigan closure was a blow at the time but perhaps a mini blessing in disguise in some respects because we’ve taken the time to visit villages we wouldn’t have otherwise plus we’ve been able to get some boat jobs done too.
      Oh wow - so you’ve had the same thing happen in a lock, it’s scary isn’t it?!?! Glad you came away unscathed from the incident.
      As for the local teenagers etc I suspect as much of the issue is with the parents showing the younger ones how to ‘behave’. I bet the local schools etc are really up against it to turn people’s lives around 😬
      Thanks for the message 👍

      Oh the leggings WTH?? Since getting nb JOSH a year and a half ago I suspect we’ve only been down the weed hatch to recover proper rubbish maybe 5 times…Burnley did it in half a day!
      You’re a half a dozen a day too chap are you? I’ve never met someone else who does what I do. I call it the breakfast of champions and could do it every day if Sue let me 🤣
      On this occasion though it was lunch of course. One day I have threatened to cook my signature evening meal on video and it’s main ingredient is eggs…and lots of them!

      It can definitely be an experience can Burnley. Some of the local inhabitants are very ‘interesting’ but if you can avoid cruising through during school holidays we think that makes a big difference.
      As for the cr4p in the canal…sadly that appears to be more permanent 😬
      Those houses are pretty impressive aren’t they?! A few Bob has been spent on those for sure.

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 11 měsíci

      It is sad Rana. The canals are a privilege and a joy but certain people treat them in an appalling way. Sadly we suspect what we have seen is largely a function of how people behave and how society works in places like this? We’ve love to be wrong and there will be many examples of where that is not the case but break things down to their basics and this is how certain places just ‘work’.
      It’s a crying shame because on doing more research there were local areas we wanted to see when time allowed but mooring up here and going for an explore…on this experience no thanks!

Why people feel the need to behave in this way in what is a natural treasure (we are lucky to have the waterways and don’t need people misbehaving in, on and around them). Still it’s a rare blip on what is otherwise a lovely asset we can all enjoy 👍😍
