- Today is the BIG DAY, the biggest and most exciting, but yet nerve-racking thing we've done in our narrowboat, crossing the wash! A journey of over 48 miles and almost 10 hours! From zig-zagging the sandbank-ridden tidal Ouse, smashing through waves out at sea and crash landing onto a beach. All in our canal boat, which was designed for a two-foot stagnant ditch.

Together we travel the beautiful waterways of the UK, with the ultimate aim of seeing them all. from crossing the hugely impressive 85m tall Pontcysyllte aqueduct, Battling the great river Thames on red boards to travelling through the centre of ancient cities like Chester. That was an amazing cruise. I enjoyed the drone footage and seeing the seals swimming in The Wash. The cats were so relaxed when Josh filmed them inside.
They were relaxed but a couple of them did get sea sick and I think if I was inside the boat I would have been sick too. 😂

Great video. The spider that crossed the Wash. Too bad Andy couldn't be there. Olive seemed to be very comfortable in those waves. I bet that eel was a fun catch. I have never caught one.
It was a bit annoying that Andy couldn't come. It was booked for the Thursday but the weather wasn't good enough. We were lucky to get through when we did as the weather was so bad in July. Olive done so well in the waves and I felt safe. I don't think I would have liked to be on Jeff and Jackie's boat as they were going up and down quite alot through the waves. Very proud of Olive.

Olive was very stable going across the wash as narrowboats are flat bottomed and aren't ment for going out to sea. She was amazing 👏

If we used a pilot it would have been about £300 lucky for us we had Jeff and Jackie very experienced sailors.😊

The water wasn't cold at all Chris. The trouble is I jumped off of the front of Olive then couldn't get back on so Roger had to get back on and put the ladder at the back of Olive and I had to walk to the back of Olive to get back on. We did have a laugh about that.

Hi all great blog nice trip from Denver to kings Lynn yes sure is a lot of sand banks you guy who you was following done a good job keep you of the sand banks ,I worked in the wash for over 40 years so I know my way around i guess you will stop on Roger sands to wait for the tide to come in then go into Boston us the weather is unpredictable in the wash especially the wind ,got to say Diane you you well and excited to do this trip ,where is Dad working? You done some great filming Josh well done ,Josh where did you get blue water from iv never seen blue water in 40 years lol ,Josh you done some great drone shots well done mate did you take your passport with you lol most people who live in Boston are polish so you need passport lol not very nice place to live so I’m told ,just like the kids throwing rocks at you I bet they was. Did you ever get any water over the bow? It does not look like you rolled as much as I thought you might. That would be my undoing. It does look like enjoyed the adventure……. Loved that seal looking at you as if he could not believe what he was seeing. LOL. Would you do that again, or was once enough? What an amazing sight to see so many ships grounded. Thanks Nancy. Water did come over the bow but we had more waves coming from the side which isn't a good thing as you are ment to go head on into waves but that couldn't be help. Glad I was up on deck steering most of the time as I would have probably been sick inside the boat like a couple of the cats were. Yes I probably would do it again but not on our own with Jeff and Jackie to follow I felt really safe they were fantastic and can't thank them enough. ❤️ 😊

What a fab video and what fun, too. The wash is on our radar but not sure when. Out of interest, I’m a Kent girl and previously at low tides on New Years Day, cricket was always played on the Goodwin Sands in the middle of the English Channel. I don’t think so now as it’s very busy with heavy traffic including massive container ships and ferries every 30mins to France and Belgium. That would be scary! You’re great explorers and make videos well worth watching.
Don't think we are that adventurous to do the channel but what an amazing vlog that would make. Do you think Jeff and Jackie would be up for it 😂😂
Should do what I do, I have a catapult and a bag of marbles next to my steering...anyone who throws stones at me gets the same from me😊....I've found that they usually disperse pretty quickly when marbles are whacking into them. Very accurate as well

Hi there Les and Anne. We are on the Chesterfield canal now and it's absolutely wonderful. If you haven't done it you should. This time of year when all the canals are so busy this is so peaceful and tranquil. You don't see a boat for days. We will be sad to leave. Where are you now?

Something I would never encourage, at a stretch braced up with heavy lines to a second boat ( two engines one boat in essence ). narrowboats dont have enough draft or beam to encounter tides or strong winds.I once saw a narrowboat roll over on the river Trent near Gainsborough trying to cross a strong ebb tide.
Olive was brilliant on the water and we were very impressed with her. An exhilarating experience and we would do it again. Loved every minute of it.

Yes it is a Devon flag. Before we moved on board Olive we lived in Ilfracombe for 22 years and loved it.
We watch you on CZcams through the tv and saw the vlog about crossing The Wash last night (while we’re on our narrow boat).

Hi di. I live a few miles up from the Boston deeps as it's known. I would not encourage anyone to venture in those waters with a narrow boat. A few have done in recent times. Ok I see your Joss done his home work on things. Fact is tho narrow boats are not designed for blue water . That's deep treacherous saltwater with strong currents. It's been done before but upto now no one has lost there lives. Surprised you even chanced it without a local pilot. Surprised they even allow it. Consider your lucky. Lot of sea boats lost in this waters. Don't encourage anyone to do this. Stay safe on the canals. Regards Dave.
Thanks for the comment Dave but it is not a legal requirement to have a pilot. Jeff and Jackie are very experienced sailors and they knew exactly what they were doing. They done most of the planning for us and we felt very safe in their hands but thanks for your concern. An adventure and something I will never forget. We are so glad we done this. 😊
Do seals just stay on the beach like that and that's where they live ? That's it and then they go in the water ?

This may be a silly question but why do you cross the wash, i though only widebeams did this to get from the north to the south whereas narrowboats can use the full canal network system.
If you went all the way around it's something like 257 miles and 140 locks so this is a lot quicker and an adventure so why not? Being 70 feet there are some canals we can't do as the locks are 60 feet so we wouldn't fit in them. The ideal canal boat would be 57 feet as you can do all the network then. We wouldn't change Olive though as we love the space on her.

Believe the only way to get a wide beam between the North and South is on the back of a lorry! Not all the locks will fit a wide beam

We already checked our insurance before we made the trip. As long as you are going from an inland waterway to another inland waterway you are covered.😊

No we think the lighter was thrown from the bridge but not sure it just landed on the stern of Olive. Could have come in handy if any of us smoked lol 😆

We didn't get a pilot as its £400. Jeff and Jackie were in the area and offered so we took them up on the offer. They are very experienced sailors and we felt they would get us across safely and they did. So we can't thank them enough as we wouldn't have done it otherwise. Also it's not law to have a pilot.
Great that you had friends experienced in this type of crossing. You were certainly calmer on the choppy seas than I would have been. Everything from now will seem tame now you have had this adventure. Have a good week. Drone footage amazing.

What can I say, "You got away with it", do I think it was a good idea, not really on the grounds that it might encourage others with less abilities to emulate your trip and get themselves in trouble which could in turn endanger the rescue services. So I would not attempt this without a pilot, if a pilot is too expensive go somewhere else.

We felt very safe doing the crossing with Jeff and Jackie without a pilot and felt very safe in very capable hands. They are very experienced sailors. You could go elsewhere and watch another channel if you like Brenda. There are plenty more out there if we have offended you in any way by doing the crossing without a pilot.
