Shark Heart had me immediately picking it up as soon as my BOTM box came in! it was so good and i thought it was going to be in my top 10 but i ended up giving it a 4 because of the second half; i wish it just followed the main couple the whole time lol

I just read Shark Heart at the beginning of the month and loveeeed it. I actually think Part 2 hit me even harder because it felt so relatable to growing up in a small town.

I agree with your commentary on Starling House. I think it needed to lean harder on either horror or fantasy, like pick one, because it felt like the idea got stretched too much between those themes. I picked it up thinking horror, then surprised with fantasy (which I do enjoy), but didn't have enough fantasy for it to work completely. Loved to hate the "villains" of that town though.
I loved the writing of Shark Heart, but I wished she leaned into the diagnosis to be more metaphor for chronic illness or a real illness. I didn't feel like her imaginary animal illnesses matched up enough with what people actually go through when someone they love is "changed" in that way.

i cried by the end of it and all i wanted to do was re-read it and i'm so glad it hits the same or more on a re-read. i haven't done a re-read yet but i very well might by the end of the year. its so good??? and i got my book club to read it and they all hated it -- I dont get it
@@lauramichelle6976 they just didn’t understand it. And yes, you have to reread it. There are a lot of moments when you know what happens later and it hints at it early and you don’t pick it up the first time. Especially stuff about wrens mom.

This is vlog is making me want to read Shark Heart
With respect to the placement of multiple sex scenes early in the narrative, sometimes relationships breakdown because they were based on good sex, which creates an opportunity for a writer to develop a real attachment while it's still primarily physical. And of course we're dealing with athletes, so there's an inherent physicality. I hope it works, because sometimes you get carried away trying to recreate with words on paper what it feels like to bond with another person.

Ok I thought it was for sure YA but it’s listed as adult.
It's annoying to have YA books placed in the adult section unnecessarily. I felt this way reading Daughter of the Moon Goddess.

Starling House DEFINITELY read more YA fantasy than adult gothic horror.
Starling House was a DNF for me. Boring af and even though it doesn’t say it’s YA it felt really YA. It felt like it was going into a million different places and none of them were interesting to me.
