How to get your Captains License is for a mariner that would like to earn his/her captains license and needs to know how to get started.

I found that USCG Exam Prep was really useful as a study aid as it has the actual exam questions and it is free.

If you have a boat and you register it you can take it out on the water without any license or training at all. The Coast Guard only requires that you have enough lifejackets, lights (at night) and other safety things. When I was 17 I bought a 13 foot boat, registered it, bought a life jacket and an air horn and flares, and went out in the ocean. I've only been stopped one time, and it was for tubing too close to a channel. They just told me not to to tube near the channel and they didn't check anything on my boat or give me a fine. (they did look up my registration number to see if I had done anything in the past or was wanted) but other than that, they were nice.

I was wondering, apart from job experience, is the license all that companies will look for? I came from another video on being a captain as a career, and they mentioned that many captains get 4 year degrees from Maritime schools. Do you know if that is most often the case, or if often you will do fine with simply the license? I get that the degree wouldn't hurt, but in most cases is it necessary (at least to compete?)

Hy, I would like to know your opinion on 2 subjects.
1st-Is 40 years old too old to pursuit a Captain's license AND actually get the job?
2nd-Can I get a captain license if I already had a heart attack?
    Let me explain my concerns
I live in Brasil and I tried 2 schools here and both didn't accept me because they only accept students with a maximum of 26 years. Then I looked for schools in Australia and despite they didn't negate me they state it is preferable that students commit before 26 years old.
The second point is that despite I have a good health now (and I can prove it) I had a heart attack in the past.
Please give me with some information here. don't want to start something that I can't finish. thanks

    • @felcas
      @felcas Před 7 lety

First of all thanks for the help anyway. Do you know portuguese?
I know Capitania dos Portos, I am actually an Amateur Master (Mestre Amador).
However I was refering to the Captain as a professional, those who command transport or passanger ships not recreational boats.
I believe the Capitania dos Portos only issue recreative/amateur licenses not professional ones, maybe they issue professional licenses but for small vessels like, "escunas", fishing vessels, ferry boats and soo forth but ships are another completely diferent subject.
In Brasil if one wants to be a ship captain then need to apply for the Navy schools, but they only accept maximum age of 26 no more then that, unfortunatelly, that is why I am researching to graduate myself outside of Brasil.

+Peter Hamilton OUPV stand for Operator of an Uninspected Passenger Vessel which is a license which allows you to take up to six paying passengers on the water. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (Colregs) are published by the International Maritime Organization (the IMO) and set out, among other things, the "rules of the road" or navigation rules to be followed by ships and other vessels at sea to prevent collisions between two or more vessels.

Update, you now you must get ninety percent on navigation as well. By the way I've always felt that 360 days is not enough, there are a lot of things that can happen on the water that one may not experience in 360 days, I deck handed for five years before becoming a Captain and I'm glad I did! Also two weeks is a bit optimistic, it's usually about a month. Finally getting a license does not mean that you can drive a boat, while there are questions pertaining to how a boat handles you should still have a lot of actual wheel time before being turned loose as a Captain. I've seen a lot of people who have a license but cannot drive a boat ( they are called paper tigers).

    • @strikeforcek9149

LifeisGreat - If your boat is 16ft or greater, you need to take the USCG approved boosters safety education course, if born in 1980 until present time.
In other words, if you're born in 1980 (or more recent) and yoir boat is 16' or bigger, you need to get a "boating license" which is just taking a 3-6hr long safety education course. These courses are available online and can be done in one day.
This is NOT to be confused with the captain's license that they're talking about in this video. This captain's license from the video is in regards to running commercial fishing charters or etc.
