Eddie Van Halen was once asked what it was like to be the greatest guitar player in the world. He said he did not know, he never met Roy Clark.
Eddie actually had Glen Campbell show him how he did that high speed flat picking style.
If it had strings Roy Clark could play it!!😊
Glenn Campbell was one of those rare individuals who could hear a song once and then play it perfectly.
Two of the very best guitar players ever. Both are sadly missed. RIP
Glen Campbell sang one of the most beautiful songs ever. His version of Jimmy Webb's song "Witchita Lineman" is a perfect song.
It is perfect!
Every time I hear "Wichita Lineman" I am back in college. Wonderful!
Webb's lyrics were often weird and wonderful. Glen Campbell and Richard Harris are very difference singers, but they both did great things with Webb songs.
Both of these guys are stone cold legends
The song from your childhood sounds like "When Johnny comes marching home". A civil war song.
Yeah, very similar cadence.
Huge respect between these two. Glen Campbell originally was a hard-working studio session player - played a lot of session guitar on Beach Boys albums. Couldn't read a note of music either. Ghost Riders is a classic country song from back in the late 1940's.
Glen was with the Wrecking Crew session players
Glen Campbell and Roy Clark were two of the best guitarist to walk the planet. Ghost Riders was on of the most covered songs and was taken to the next level by the Southern rock band “ The Outlaws” it does have lyrics.
The spiderbait cover isn't bad either
💯💯💯
Then The Highwaymen did a great cover
Marty Robbins version ftw!
Other covers are numerous. I think the earliest release was by Burl Ives (1949). Other covers available out there are by Southern Raised, Marty Robinson, Johnny Cash, Sons of the Pioneers, Debbie Harry (Yes, from Blondie), and Duane Eddy. I'm sure there are more versions, but it's a well-covered tune.
Roy Clark & Jimmy Henley/Orange Blossom Special. This one is amazing!😮😊
Both of these men were masters of their instruments. And Roy Clark can play multiple instruments.
A badass banjo player if I ever saw one!
You've hot to do this one:
* Roy Clarke and Buck Trent......"Dueling Banjo's". ( video)
Glenn and Roy were kicking it in Ghost Riders!
Roy Clark and Johnny Cash playing, and singing, The Orange Blossom Special. Quite a treat.
The two of them doing Folsham Prison is a sight to see
As a Metal and hard rock fan for decades, Glen and Roy were and still are the greatest string instrument players ever! Glen was staggering!
Glenn Campbell has been on so many songs you’ve heard as a studio musician, part of the Wrecking Crew. Remarkable that he does that on a 12 string and they are playing in harmonies and different octaves but just kill it and egg each other on.....with a smile
Glen was a member of the famous Wrecking Crew. One story is that he was good friends with & lived next door to Alice Cooper. Eddie Van Halen asked Cooper if he could get Glen to give him a guitar lesson. Roy was a master of the guitar, the banjo & anything else that had strings. Two of the greatest.
I can believe that Cooper did. He’s probably the nicest guy to ever put on a rock horror show
I heard an interview with AC in which he stated that very thing. He and Glenn were very good friends and golfing buddies.
Ghost Riders has been used in TV and maybe movies. It’s based on a civil war era song: When Johnny Comes Marching Home
Check out Glen doing Beethoven's 5th with an orchestra backing him up. Or him and Steve Wariner doing Galveston. Chills.
Roy singing "Yesterday When I Was Young" is incredibly good.
I liked Roy’s, “Thank God And Greyhound You’re Gone.”
Love Glenn on that twelve string. Just amazing!!
"Dueling Banjos" with Buck Trent and Roy Clark, you'll be amazed!
Roy Clark has a great song "Thank God and Greyhound ", it's good for a laugh.
The ants song is the melody for when Johnny comes marching home, which is a Civil War song.. Not ghost riders in the sky.
Classical Gas -Glen Campbell - will blow your mind.
Mason William recorded it, though Campbell may well have performed it, too.
Roy clark the king of guitars bro the beast
Try the version of Ghost Riders In The Sky by the great Lorne Green. This song hit #1 on the country chart and #1 on the Pop chart back in the 1960's. Lorne Green was the star of the first TV series to be filmed completely in color from beginning to end, the entire series. The show is called Bonanza. It premiered in 1959. But Lorne Green was not a professional singer, yet he hit gold with his country album and the two hit singles from it!😮😊
I'm not sure if the second hit on the album was Ringo, but that was a very big hit of Lorne Greene's as well.
We used to watch HeeHaw when I was a kid. Roy Clark and Buck Owens were the hosts. It was corny but funny and they always had excellent country music guests! I’m sure there are other clips out there of Roy, Dueling Banjos 🪕 is an amazing piece!! 💙👵🏼✌🏼
For Roy I would add his version of folsom prison blues. The 60s version. With regards to Glen, his versions of the William tell overture and gentle on my mind are both incredible.
Listen to him play dueling banjo next. Another instrument he mastered 😊
React to Three Dog Night Joy to the World, Mama Told Me Not to Come and Eli's coming live!
Glen Campbell is a whole other trip. He is a tremendous musician! You should definitely check him out too! Great reaction to two great musicians totally enjoying themselves!☺️😀
Roy can play anything
My pops had Hee Haw on every Saturday night. We so enjoyed Roy Clark. Joyous! Great descriptive! Thank you.
Check out Wichita Lineman by Glenn Campbell, he released this in 1968. The original version of Ghost Riders in the Sky was by Stan Jones in 1948/49. Burl Ives recorded his own version in 1949. More than 50 performers have recorded their versions, both instrumental or with vocals; including Gene Autry, Frankie Laine, Johnny Cash, and Marty Robbins, just to name a few.
i remember glen campbell from both rock and country stations from back in the 1960's-70's.
GLEN CAMPBELL'S 🎶 Where is the playground Susie 🎶 besides 🎶 Witichaw Lineman 🎶 have wonderful lyrics SUNG by GLEN CAMPBELL!--worth listening too.😊
The joy was of a young master and old Jedi playing together with a lot of mutual respect. Glen Campbell was a great guitarist. For years, he was part of a group of studio musicians called The Wrecking Crew. They played on thousands of recordings (great documentary online).
Yes!!I really enjoyed learning about the Wrecking Crew. Also watched the one about Muscle Shoals.
Glenn Campbell played the Matt Damon role of Le Boeuf to John Wayne’s Sheriff Rooster Cogburn in Wayne’s Oscar winning True Grit(1969)
Two of the greatest
Glenn Campbell was part of the famous Wrecking Crew. Studio musicians who played on almost every hit song in the 60s-70s.
Both of these guys play multiple instruments.
Campbell even played bagpipes.
Glen was also a " Beach Boy" for a time
So glad to see you step out of your comfort zone and totally enjoy two masters at work. And these are country artists. Both legends.
HEY CLIFF! 😊SO GLEN DIDN'T EVENNNNN READ MUSIC AND MOST INSANE THING OF ALLLLLL IS THAT HE PLAYED MAINLY A 12 STRING! 😮SO THIS WAS AWESOME OF COURSE BUT IF YOU WANT YOUR MIND BLOWN YOU NEED TO SEE GLEN DO ( WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE ) IT'S THE TV THEME SONG OF GLEN'S FAVORITE SHOW ( THE LONE RANGER ) 👍RIP☹ GLEN, YOU WERE THE BEST BY FARRRRR! 💯 KEEP ENJOYING GREAT MUSIC CLIFF
Stop yelling
Glen Campbell was an amazing guitarist.. Glen even taught himself to play the bagpipes( his heritage is Scottish(s) from Scotland....Roy Clark and Glen were good friends over the years. Both down to earth no pretense. No egos. Amazing talents. Hey Cliff! They both are great singers also!😂 I grew up watching them on TV 60s 70s . What a time to experience talent...both are up in heaven❤❤. RiP 😊
Agree!🙌🏼
What? I couldn't hear you over ringing in my ears.
@@chrischar9428 Get a grip. Some folks can't see so well. They aren't necessarily yelling; they're just visually impaired.
Did you see Roy's eyes as he was playing? He was not looking at his guitar: He was looking at Glen's guitar. Master level duet skills.
Glen ripping that 12 string like it was a regular guitar, so much talent.
Check out John Denver "Bells of Rhymey" , the later video where it's hust him playing 12 string. I knew he was a megastar singer and song writer.. but I had no idea he could play like that, until I saw a comment from James Burton, who was in John's band after Elvis died, about what an underrated guitarist John was.
Glad you are enjoying learning about these greats. Both are great. This song, Ghost Riders was written in I think the 40's. Glen Campbell doing the William Tell Overture or Roy Clark doing Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues, his way. Great reaction
You may have heard it in the Blues Brothers movie. Thanks for reacting to this Cliff!
I saw a video of Roy Clark as a guest on the Odd Couple tv show, playing the Malaguena. Also saw a video of Glen playing the William Tell Overture with an orchestra. Absolutely amazing!
Roy Clark & Glen Campbell had an agreement out of respect not to play each other's signature song Roy never did William tell overture & Glen never did Malaguena. in guitar playing these 2 where equals how ever Roy was the faster player in my opinion & known as the best stringed instrument player. Roy Clark did with a pick what most players did with thumb & 2 or 3 fingers.
Back in the 80s i got to see Glen several times due to him being a member of my Church in Az. One time i even shared a hymnal with him during a service. He was a very nice man, Amazing guitar player and singer, and as a little kid i loved his music. So pretty amazing to just find out that he was just an ordinary guy with Extraordinary skills
People! The Blues Brothers sang "Rawhide"!
Hee Haw had some fine musical talent! These two were amazing!!
Glen Campbell was also a member of the "Wrecking Crew", a group of studio musicians that played on almost every album in the 60's and 70's. Worth looking into their story. He also often filled in for Brian Wilson in the Beachboys. You might be remembering Ghost Riders in the Sky from the Blues Brothers movie.
Glen Campbell was a session player playing on a thousand albums with the Wrecking Crew. He was also a member of the Beach Boys for a while. Eddie Van Halen asked Alice Cooper to ask Glenn for playing lessons.
Two of the greatest guitar players ever. My dad used to watch Hee Haw and we, as kids, used to roll our eyes. As an adult, I realize the amazing amount of talent that was on that show.
The music is based on "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" which is also the music for the kid's song "When the Ants Go Marching Down to the Ground". And Johnny Cash wrote lyrics for it and recorded.
Glen Campbell was a member of the famous studio musicians group “The Wrecking Crew”.
Glen Campbell was a sutio player as a part of "The Wrecking Crew", a group of player that were on hundreds of records for all type of people, from Frank Sintra to Beach Boys. These guys were bands that recorded hundred 's of recordings for big stars.
You are remembering "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again"
Roy Clark in “Dueling Banjos"
Geoff Castellucci singing "Ghost Riders in the Sky"
Glenn Campbell was an awesome studio musician before he got famous. Roy Clark playing on the odd couple is unbelievable.
The original song lyrics are about a cowboy who sees the Ghost Riders chasing the devil's herd of cows in a stormy sky. One of the Ghost Riders warns the cowboy to change his ways so he will not be condemned, as they are, to forever chase the devil's herd, never to catch them. Absolutely gives you the chills when you hear it. Lorne Green's version from 1964 was a good match to Vaughn Monroe's, recorded in 1949 (first version I ever heard).
I am a rocker. I'm not a country music fan. But, I grew up watching Hee-Haw with the fam as a kid. One thing I learned watching that show was that Roy Clark was a guitar god. Genre be darned.
Spend a few days listening to two of the greatest musicians God put on the earth. This is guitar royalty.
Dan Akroid and John Bilushi did a version in the movie "The Blues Brothers"
I believe that was "Rawhide". "Sure, we have both kinds of music - Country AND Western" ,🤣
You may have heard it if you have ever watched The Blues Brothers 2000, Glen Campbell is a great guitarist, played a lot of you heard in the 60s including The Beach Boys. Great reaction
When Johnny comes Marching home in the chorus.
Talent like has never been heard since. And never will be again. And they dress nicely!
Ghost Riders in the Sky was an old classic from 1948 with countless covers. Growing up in the 70's (graduated HS in 1981), the definitive version for me was the Outlaws so check that one out. Johnny Cash did a famous version of it, also.
Look for Glen Campbell playing the William Tell Overture. Hopefully you'll pick a version where he plays part of it with the guitar behind the back of his neck. :)
You're right... "The Ants Go Marching One By One" is done to the tune of Ghost Riders.
Roy Clark could play multiple instruments and was pretty amazing at all of them.
Roy Clark...."Malaguena" Superhuman!
He did it already
One of the songs that has been recorded and performed by dozens if not a hundred different artists. One of my favorites I have not been able to find. My dad had it on vinyl. It was called Persuasive Percussions. My other favorite is The Outlaws version. Down another path, very few know that Glen Campbell sold 3 times as many records in the 60s as the Beatles.
This song was written by Stan Jones in 1948. Bits and pieces have been used on TV and in Movies.
Ghost Riders In the Sky, The Ants Go Marching One By One, When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again, and Johnny I Barely Knew Ya all sound VERY similar. That's probably where the deja vu comes from.
Glenn Campbell and Roy Clark are two of the best guitar players to walk the earth. It doesn't even matter what genre you are talking about, they could do it all!!! Sadly they are both gone now!!!
If you’re going to check out some all out guitar performances, you’ve got to watch some of the live concerts that The Ventures did. Slaughter on Tenth Avenue is fun, Wipe Out, Caravan, Telstar & so many more.
Here's a Roy Clarke song that shows some of his many talents, sung on The Muppet Show!
I just discovered it while watching Muppet Show videos.
The song is Rocky Top, and it shows him playing guitar, banjo, mandolin and fiddle!
My hyperlinks were deleted from my comment on Sinead O'Connor video, so I'll try to be more sneaky with this one...
Rocky Top sungczcams.com/video/a3VU122Mc1o/video.htmlfeature=sharedoff of The Muppet Show.
Sorry that you'll have to cut and paste to find the link😢
This song has been covered by almost everyone, including a great version by The Outlaws back in the '70s. If I'm remembering correctly though, the first person to record it was Burl Ives.
Glen Campbell rockin that 12 string.
Love Roy and Glenn. Roy Clark and Johnny cash is another great one Folsom prison blues
The song you are thinking of is 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home' which is an old Civil War song, which was borrowed for 'The Ants Go Marching In'.
Glenn Campbell’s pretty awesome… He played with the Beach boys for a while! You need to see Roy Clark playing Orange blossom special on the fiddle why a young boy named Jimmy happily is playing the banjo!! I think Roy always played for the joy of it and he had a quirky sense of humor too!!
need to see picking and grinning with these two
The song you were humming at the end was "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again" (aka "Johnny, We Hardly Knew Ye") mixed with the "William Tell Overture" (aka "The Lone Ranger Theme")
Between Country and Rock... they have Thee Best Guitar players in the World!!!
I meet Glen a few times at NPBC my dad and his buddies Pastor Jackson, and Ken Miller would play golf with him once in a blue moon. I’m not saying my Dad was friends with Glenn, but he did hang with him once and a while.
I met him once at one of his concerts. Long story short, his cousin was my sisters best friends. The cousin wrote a note to him and told us to give it to him at the concert. We did. He was so nice and thanked us for giving him the note.
LOVE Ghost Rider! yippee ki yay yippee ki yo Ghost Riders in the sky!
Jonny Cash Ghost Rider In The Sky
Johnny chach
Cash
Love Glen. Used to watch Roy Clark once in a while on Hey Haw. Glen and Roy have such fun playing with one another. Should hear the vocal, Johnny Cash or his group the Highwaymen. Also, Glen playing Flight of the Bumblebee and/or William Tell overture. (Classics will do you good.)
Ok, that was the March of the Ants. Now I can't get it out of my head! Thanks! Great reaction.
You just saw two of the best guitarist ever that many today bow to. A similar tune is when Johnny Comes Marching Home, which has Hurrah. Glen also does the William Tell Overture.
Chet Atkins also was known for playing the guitar before he became a legend as well. Check out his "Stars and Stripes" song. A song you would normally hear an entire band play.
Loving that you have discovered Roy Clark. You should really see him doing Folsom Prison Blues. A Johnny Cash cover.
Riders on the storm... was done by the Doors ( lead singer was jim Morrison) good song that will mess with your head...
Roy and Glen knew how to play electric AND acoustic guitar and were masters of both. Check out Stevie Ray Vaughan.
These men were both so incredibly talented! Glen could also play the banjo, but Roy could play pretty much any instrument! Great entertainers, sadly both are gone now!
That was cool. I've never heard this song without the words before. It really makes you focus on the music. That small section of verse is the same as the first two lines of the Ants Go Marching One by One, but it is actually from a different military song. It was very common for popular songs to be the tunes to nursery rhymes or even stolen from military songs. It makes them easy for children to remember. I think you should do Orange Blossom Special next, but the version with Jimmy Henley, because that song is really meant to be played with at least one fiddle and other versions don't have one. It makes all the difference in the world with this song.
I was raised on this music, and on this show called Hee Ha
The ants song came into my mind instantly too! I had no idea it was the same thing lol
You need to check out Roy Clark playing Orange Blossom Special! On the fiddle!!
love this - Glen on the 12 string
2 of the best 'picker's' of their generation. Both also had some of the best songs as well. If memory serves Roy can play just about anything that has strings. And welcome to the rabbit hole that is country music. Give Keith Urban a look and listen, especially his live stuff.
Two of the finest players ever
Both of these guys were so extremely talented, and massively overlooked.
