@@CliffBeatsOfficial Cliff her are two other versions of this, both longer. First is an electric guitar version. The second is him playing his 12 string Ovation guitar. Just for your edification. Roy toured Russia in the 80's and someone asked if he could play a Balalaika. They handed him one and said, "give me a minute". He walked around the stage playing different chord patterns. Then said, "O.K. let's go". He then proceeded to tear up a song I can't remember, and the crowd went nuts. Roy used to say, "if it has strings and a neck, I can play it''. He played guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, electric bass and stand-up bass. He was as humble as a man can be. He helped many new musicians by having them on his show Hee Haw and playing with them. Another great guitarist, actually two people to check out, are Jerry Reed and Glen Campbell. Both top notch players that could play whatever they needed. Campbell toured with the Beach Boys in the 60's and was an in-demand player for the great sessions band in L.A. 'Murder's Row'. There are many great guitar players that you've never heard of that could hold their own with anyone out there including the late, great Les Paul.

Roy was one of the best guitar players there ever was. He doesn't get as much recognition as he should because he was "country". Same with Glen Campbell. Glenn was a phenomenal guitar player.

I heard it said that someone asked Stevie Ray Vaughn what it was like being the world’s greatest guitar player. He is said to have replied I don’t know go ask Roy Clark.
His strumming hand is so fast, you can't even see it! Also, he could play pretty much any stringed instrument. A musician's musician.
This is something known as “talent.” It used to be common among performers.
Malaguena is one of those things that Spanish guitarists must know how to do. That's how impactful this was
But generally they play it fingerstyle, and Clark played it with a plectrum. Very unusual and amazing.
Roy Clark rarely got the recognition he deserved as a serious guitarist because he was often a very humorous performer. He was a mainstay on the country comedy variety show "Hee Haw" for years, and gave many amazing performances between jokes while dressed in overalls with bits of hay stuck to him. This guest appearance on "The Odd Couple" was a change of venue, and they basically gave him the freedom to play whatever he wanted for this scene without having to joke about it. He made the best of it, giving us this incredible solo.

That's the first thing I think of with Roy Clark. I was very young and hated country music and was subjected to the show. BUT thankful to have heard his music.

This man had a gift to play anything that had as little as a single string. It didn't matter what the stringed instrument was he was just able to play it like it was a natural thing to do. You also commented on the fat tie. The Odd Couple was a popular show in the 1970's (1970 - 1975) in America and that was part of the fashion of the times.
One of his records was "the Lightening Finger of Roy Clark" May times he worked in humour with his performances 12th St. Rag. He did a duet performance of Folsom Prison Blues with Johnny Cash that is fun to watch. He is unmatched on the acoustic Guitar but is great on the electric as well

What does shred mean? Watching Roy play was a slice of heaven.
If I remember correctly, he studied under one of the masters of Spanish guitar - Segovia.
"12th Avenue Rag" is early Roy Clark showcasing his insanely quick BANJO picking. There are also several more videos of Roy doing Malaguena on 12string electric - longer versions - but the video quality is not the best. Roy also does one of the saddest and most beautiful ballads of all time, called "Yesterday, When I Was Young" which does not feature guitar, but it is a beautiful ballad and it was a major hit. He is also a great comedian, and you can see on CZcams, Roy doing a comedy version of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues".
Roy Clark was also considered one of the best ever banjo player. He was proficient violin player. And comedian. That and being a country music artist hurt his reputation. Comedy gold by him, "Thank God and Greyhound." Perfect sad love song" Yesterday When I Was Young "

I'll never get tired of watching people reacting to this one the first time! At your first "Holy sh!t" I literally laughed out loud.
You should hear him play 12 string classical Spanish guitar. There are good guitarists, great guitarists, then there are wizards. Roy is a wizard, at guitar, banjo, fiddle, really anything with strings. He was an actor, comedian, and mostly country singer, Co hosted the TV show Hee Haw for years.
Too many guitarists worry about their fingering hand and ignore their strumming. Roy was a master who could do it all. Sadly, he often gets forgotten because of his country roots and even his own humbleness - he never really made a big deal about showing off his skills and even would play a dimwitted character sometimes as he played, acting as if he didn't really know what he was doing. And he also played a mean banjo qnd fiddle too!
I highly recommend watching more of his Malaguena performances, especially.
There's one on electric, and a few he played later in his career on an effing twelve-string!

His right hand is so fast, that cameras of the day could not capture his technique. All we got was a blur. Fiddle, guitar or banjo Roy seemed to have mastered them all.
Roy clark has always been an amazing artist. I remembered when he played in heehaw. That was amazing. He was always known for being a great guitarist. I know he's no longer with us, but I believe his legacy will live on.

What I Love about this clip from "The Odd Couple" is that this is a professional setting. These three men are acting in a scene. Jack Klugman and Tony Randall are very talented actors and with that being said when Roy starts to play Tony and Jack become just like us. They become part of the audience. Look at their body language and how they react when Roy finishes playing. They are no longer acting. They are responding as any of us would if we were in their place. You can see these two professional actors doing everything they can to keep it together and finish the scene.
I was a kid in the 70's when this show was on tv and seeing this. I was amazed because up till that point I only knew of Roy from his appearances on Hee Haw. lol Know to really blow your mind imagine Shakira's hips to this music. LMAO.
Of course there was also the Million Dollar Band. This was a jam session of some of the best, most prolific musicians in Nashville: Chet Atkins, Boots Randolph, Floyd Cramer, Charlie McCoy, Danny Davis, Jethro Burns and Johnny Gimble, along with Hee Haw co-host Roy Clark. It was called the Million Dollar Band because it was estimated that was about how much it take, in 1980s money, to book all of them at a show. And these greats are just having a casual jam sess on national TV.
The Odd Couple was a Situation Comedy from the '70s, based on the Neal Simon Play and Movie of the same name. It was taped in front of a live studio audience, and as far as I know, they did not use the applause sign. The applause you heard was completely spontaneous. BTW, Mountain Dew is a very old bluegrass song, which would have been associated with the "Good Ol' Country Boy" that Roy Clark was generally portrayed as. For reference, check out the Hee Haw show, where he played and sang every week.
This style of music is called 'flamenco', and Roy Clark was a master of it.

Roy Clark was a phenomenal musician. There are few to match his calibre. My favourite guitarist is/are Tommy and Phil Emanuel, two aussie brothers who are/were self taught. Tommy's version of "Classical Gas" is mind blowing 🤯
Unfortunately we lost Phil a few years ago to an asthma attack. There is plenty of videos out there of the brothers performing together, my personal favourite is a show they did at a club in the NSW town of Armidale... well worth watching...😊

He was amazing!!! My father in law actually got to play with him of all places at the Utah State prison in the 60s. They had what was called the felon follies. And the public could come watch inmates play music. My father in law unfortunately was an inmate at the time but was an amazing musician and an amazing voice. Roy Clark and Lefty frazell( don't know if I spelled that right). Came and sat in with them. My late wife had a photograph of her dad and them at the prison. My father in law could have been famous but alcoholism ruined that for him. He passed in 1991 from alcoholism. And unfortunately addiction ran strong in the family, and my wife died of an overdose in 2007. But when I see anything with Roy Clark it reminds me of that picture. He was an amazing man.
The beauty of Roy Clark is this. When you see excellent guitarists you are amazed at their skill. Whey you see Roy Clark play you are amazed at what a guitar can actually do.

Carlos Montoya was one of the best Spanish Flamenco guitarist in the world and died in 1993. I got to see him at Yale back in 1966 on my way back from visiting my sister in Germany. Stopped in NY and my brother in Connecticut took me to see him. I was 16 and so impressed. I did not know Roy Clark could do this though. Thanks. Mountain Dew that I know is a greenish yellow soft drink. "Someone said that Roy had a tremendous right hand and his 64th notes are clean and seemingly effortless. He also plays jaw-dropping muted 128th notes on “Caravan” as a percussive statement. I've never heard anything like it." I can't even imagine playing those notes that fast. And he can sing too.

I was very lucky to see Roy in person. He played the violin, banjo, electric and acoustic guitars, mandalin, piano and drums with "equal" skill. He was an/is an amazing talent. So glad I saw him that night. Pardon my terrible spelling...

Another great place to look for great guitar would also look for the five guys awarded CGP (Certified Guitar Player) by Chet Atkins. Lately Tommy Emmanuel has been getting good press. Check out his version of Classical Gas.
Roy gets overlooked because he's considered mainly a country musician. He was an overall entertainer, he could do comedy and starred on skits on almost a country version of Saturday night live. He could play acoustic, electric, banjo, fiddle and mandolin. If i remember right, he was one of the first artists to have their own theater in Branson, Missouri. If you want to see more, check out him performing Rocky Top on the muppet show.
The Odd Couple was a very successful comedy show in the 1970s. The two stars were blown away by Roy. The song was not rehearsed during the actual before show rehearsals and were genuinely awed by him.

The best version I’ve seen is the one from the CZcams channel stormsontheocean , it’s a live version. She has recently done a duet with the same song that includes Chris Stapleton, it is very good but the earlier version to me is the best. You HAVE to check out Charo!!! We in the USA remember her as the “Chuci Chuci” girl on the Love Boat and Fantasy Island but she is an unbelievable guitarist and did train under Segovia.
I saw Roy live in a small setting ( Chesaning, Mi., showboat) in 1987. He didn't disappoint. Played guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and was a comedian between songs, I'll never forget it.
watching the whole thing again is something everyone that reacts to this ought to do. this is one of the most insane live solo guitar performances i've ever seen. deserves that respect, and how much can you possibly take in on the first watch?

Yes, ROY was amazing.. he usually had this sort of "aw-shucks" hillbilly attitude, but he could play any stringed instrument.. he was incredible and super-humble.. this "on-the-spot" performance during a sit-com was just an example of his talent and humility.. lol... appreciate your reaction!

This was a early 70s live audience TV show known as The Odd Couple. "Mountain Dew" was a reference to the Mountain Dew theme song. At this time almost every major soft drink Coke,Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Dr Pepper, Royal Crown ,Tab, Seneca, 7Up had a theme song.
I wasn't working I would try to find one of his dueling videos.
