Yes, also mentions the lines down south will give out if it snows. All those people keeping the electricity flowing, a hard and dangerous job.
When I was a kid in the 70's I had an older cousin from Montana in his early 30's, he was killed while working, clear skies for miles, he was up on a transmission tower when a lightning strike came out of nowhere, took the tower down including him.

"Wichita Lineman" is a 1968 song written by Jimmy Webb for American country music artist Glen Campbell, who recorded it backed by members of the Wrecking Crew. Widely covered by other artists, it has been described as "the first existential country song."
“Wichita Lineman” was that song. Webb used his own experience and inspiration from driving through rural Oklahoma and looking at the long lines of telephone poles at the side of the roadways. He thought about the workers and wondered if you/he could imagine the lives of the “everyman” hard working blue collar type.
There's a place where the terrain absolutely flattens out. It's almost like you could take a level out of your tool kit and put it on the highway, and that bubble would just sit right there on dead centre. It goes on that way for about 50 miles. In the heat of summer, with the heat rising off the road, the telephone poles gradually materialise out of this far, distant perspective and rush toward you. And then, as it happened, I suddenly looked up at one of these telephone poles and there was a man on top, talking on a telephone. He was gone very quickly, and I had another 25 miles of solitude to meditate on this apparition. It was a splendidly vivid, cinematic image that I lifted out of my deep memory while I was writing this song. I thought, I wonder if I can write something about that? A blue-collar everyman guy we all see everywhere, working on the railroad or working on the telephone wires or digging holes in the street. I just tried to take an ordinary guy and open him up and say, 'Look, there's this great soul and there's this great aching and this great loneliness inside this person, and we're all like that. We all have this capacity for these huge feelings'.”
    -Jimmy Webb

I believe the song title is about a man whose job gives him pride, and the work he does tells everyone who he is. Lineman might not mean a lot to big city professionals but maintaining those lines to the county's residents makes him important to those who depend upon him, and that includes the lady who he has dedicated his life to, and who he is trying to reassure that he is there, and will always be there.

Glen Campbell was an American original who started in music as an LA studio musician with the famous "Wrecking Crew". He went solo to highlight his singing. Please react to "Southern Nights" live with Jerry Reed, and react to his last television show on the BBC "Weekend Wogan" where his daughter joins him on stage, these are must-see performances. Also, "Galveston", "Hey, Little One", By the Time I get to Phoenix", and "McArthur Park". Many of these songs were written by the great Jimmy Webb. Jimmy Webb wrote the song not Glen Campbell. In 1968, Webb was driving through his home state of Oklahoma, near Wichita, and saw a solitary man working on one of the telephone poles that dotted the landscape. Thinking about it as he drove back to Los Angeles, the song just sort of sprang out of his musings. The lineman, who worked for the county, was portrayed as a lonely man whose solitary job gave him plenty of time to think about his love life. Webb, who wrote "MacArthur Park" for Richard Harris and "Up, Up and Away" for The 5th Dimension, also wrote a string of hits for Campbell, including this one, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," and "Galveston."

I'm only 30 but this is one of my favorite old school songs. A lineman is a solitary, lonely kind of job where you're on the road a lot. The writer, Jimmy Webb, is using this as a metaphor for either physical or emotional distance from someone you love, at least that's the way I always thought of it. The longing in this iis palpable. Webb and Campbell were a good team, also doing the classics Galveston and By The Time I Get To Phoenix.

What a great talent Glenn was. He was a "Beach Boy" for a while in the early days, and he was a member of the LOs Angles recording studio Band called "The Wrecking Crew" that did the recording sessions for stars like Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, and many other artists. He was recognized as one of the greatest guitarists in the world. And yes, that includes guys like Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix. In fact, Glen was friends with Eric Clapton. Sadly, Glen died of Alzheimer's dementia a few years ago.

Down here in Texas, sitting out the aftermath of the hurricane last Monday. Power line crews were called in from all over to help get our lights back on. Made me think of this song, and how those guys left their families back home to get that little bit of extra pay, doing a tough job with long hours.

As mentioned. Glen was an incredible guitarist although you don't really get it from this song or "Rhinestone Cowboy" which is another good song. But if you really want to see his guitar prowess then you really should;d watch "Glen Campbell plays the William Tell Overture (acoustic)". It will blow you away. There's an electric version also but I prefer the acoustic guitar one since it's harder to play an acoustic guitar like that because of the strings.

Okay guys, he's talking about power lines, like electricity lines, telephone lines. Secondly, he's from Arkansas. A self-trained musician and considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He was a session musician, and part of a group of session musicians known as The Wrecking Crew. His guitar work is heard on 20 of the top 100 singles of all time. Literally, a legend

Always loved this song! I remember so vividly, at 12 years old, watching him perform this on a TV show.
I teared up at a lyrical glimpse into the thoughts and emotions of this lineman traveling down hundreds of miles of lonely roads.
Please give Galveston a listen! It helps to know the context of that song to really feel it.

He recently passed away after a long bout with alzheimer's disease. He continued to tour when he first discovered his alzheimer's diagnosis. A wonderful human being & great artist. He will be missed

Glenn Campbell was an incredible songwriter, musician and actor. He had his own network show. His song "Galveston" hits me, because I spent some time there as a young man, and still feel I lost a love. It is sad dementia took him, but his daughter cared for him and preformed with him for years as therapy because she knew it would keep him doing what he loved. You can learn about him here on YT. There is a documentary about his life.

Glen Campbell: music icon. self-taught guitarist, got his start as a member of The Wrecking Crew as a guitarist and vocalist; arguably one of the most talented guitarists - ever. (see the video of him playing The Lone Ranger Theme on a single-neck 12-string guitar). Amazing vocals. A List: By the time I get to Phoenix, Gentle on My Mind, Galveston, Try a little kindness, Galveston, Southern Nights, Rhinestone Cowboy. RIP Glenn.

Back in the 60's and 70's, you could hear a string section (small orchestra) providing music in the background of many songs. It was included in Pop, Rock, and Country music and especially on TV. Many TV shows had opening and closing credits with instrumental music, nearly every time a string section performing. That was something I always liked.

Beautiful song, arrangement, performance. Old Glen was one in a million, IMO. And yes, this is a song about some working class guy thinking about his girl as he climbs up poles and repairs power lines, etc. Maybe he'd be less poetic, but the feelings sound real as day. Also that guy is still 'on the line' waiting to know what his girl's gonna say. And most likely that's Glen himself on the guitar. He was a monster session dude. Thanks, guys.

He could play any style and was a part of the famous "Wrecking Crew" of LA studio musicians that played on many recordings made in the 60s and 70s. He also toured with the Beach Boys and was a good friend of Alice Cooper. A truly class, talented, accomplished performer.

a lineman is a power line worker...a very dangerous job...about 10+ years ago, we had a really bad ice storm which blew out power out in most of Tulsa metro area, and we had linemen come from all over the country to help restore our power....they have to travel a lot, work up in the air next to extreme currents, etc.
