    Marine Le Pen is the leader of France's far-right political party, Front National or the "National Front". She took over the party in 2011 from her father and founder of the party, Jean-Marie Le Pen. Since then, she has kicked her father out of the party as part of a process known as "dédiabolisation". By removing her father, Marine Le Pen hoped to cut ties with the anti-Semitic reputation that he had cultivated for the party. Despite this effort, her recent comments on the Vel' d'Hiv roundup have hindered her attempts to distance the party from it's xenophobic and anti-Semitic past. As the French election approaches, many are wondering whether the nationalist fervor that has swept across Europe will continue gaining momentum in France. Like British leaders promising a Brexit, Le Pen would like to secure a referendum for a Frexit from The European Union, which she believes is a globalist organization that favors German interests over those of France. In addition to the threat of globalization, she fears the erosion of a distinctly French identity. Accordingly, she would like to pursue anti-Immigration policies as president that would severely cut back on the rising number of asylum requests granted to newly arrived refugees from Syria, North Africa, and elsewhere in The Middle East. Like American president Donald Trump, she cites concerns about safety in order to defend her anti-immigration platform. In addition to restricting immigration, she has promised to protect France from Islamist fundamentalism, which she believes is a religious entity that serves to promote terrorism. Critics claim that her policies are Islamophobic, but she defends her platform by maintaining that her most pressing interest is protecting France for the French. In doing so, she often references the distinctly French concept of secularism known as laïcité. Recent terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015 and attacks in Nice in 2016 have stoked xenophobic and racist sentiments in France. Marine Le Pen is hoping that those fears translate into votes in the 2017 French presidential election.

      I mean you cant force someone to be independent. Most of those dependencies you listed before cannot survive on their own, due to a lack of natural resources. Therefore, an overwhelming majority wants to stay as a French dependency, because getting food on your table is more important that nationalistic matters.

    • @sciolist3109
      @sciolist3109 Před 4 lety +11

      And her rhetoric isnt one like the "white majority, white rule" Trump uses. Instead, the nationalism she supports as "French" is civil nationalism, the idea of being proud of being a French citizen, not exactly a white French (even within White French, there are gasconese, occitanians, german, and brittany.) "French" has always been a fluid identity, and her rhetoric isnt against minorities per se, but the minorities who identify with their home country more than they do to loyalty to France.
      Also, I dont understand why Vox paints hate against Muslim fundamentalism as "bad". Most muslims also agree against Muslim Fundamentalism. Muslim fundamentalism undermines all the goals of western civilization and secularization. Muslim fundamentalists, Christian fundamentalists, Hindu fundamentalists, they're all dangerous to western society.

Marine, like the average German citizen, is simply separating her personal identity from the political party in control that took those actions against the Jews. She clearly did not deny or condone what happened to the Jews. The people of France were shocked by Marine's comment but ultimately understood her and agreed with her. It was only with the enlightenment and the empowerment of average people that ideas of all men being created equal or liberty for all actually arose. Christianity’s history is one of barbarism, persecution of others and a blatant disregard for science. Sinjin Smyth you got it backwards. i will open my home, lay out meals and even help someone find a job. Give them moral support, affection and the warm family environment every human deserves. If he disrespects me, i ask to clarify cause once may be a misunderstanding. If he hurts me, i ask for an apology cause it may be an accident. BUT if they show a clear unwillingness to try and be a decent guest I am not the unreasonable one when i kick them out.

      What do you consider to be "our house" in the case of France? During the colonial period, much of the world was considered French. The colonized were told to admire France and often forced to conform to French culture, religion, and language, and yet are now being denied entrance into the nation they were told was their own. If one considers French colonial history, it is not difficult to see how Le Pen's policies are both hypocritical and yes, racist.

    • @geckoicaza5265
      @geckoicaza5265 Před 7 lety +1

      I define "our house" and today's France in 2017. Even IF I were to agree with your assessment, how does this justify the actions of the incoming immigrants? How does it undermine the right of a sovereign nation to say "Follow the law and you can stay"? It doesn't.
      Using some past transgressions doesn't justify today's actions. Just because someone who looks like me did something ages ago, in many cases before I was born doesn't give anyone the right to inflict violence, rape and murder against me. Having something bad happen to someone who looks like you ages ago doesn't excuse your abhorrent behavior today.

      In France religion and the state are separated (since 1901) and far right parties praise secularism because following the principle of "laïcité", she could prevent Muslim people from wearing the hijab in the street, from praying anywhere but home and that's her point. In France we are very sceptical about the religion and the state put together, if she was to make the state Christian, an overwhelming majority of people would disagree.

      Sexual assault is any sexual contact or behavior that occurs without consent. This includes forced kissing and groping, and it can be, but is not always, rape. While it is still a staggering number of people and an absolutely horrible event to have occurred. A little over 20 of the sexual assaults you mentioned were rape. In fact, although there were over 1200 assaults on that New Year's Eve, less than 500 were sexual assaults.
