In 1788, Thomas Jefferson wrote that American women shouldn’t "wrinkle their foreheads with politics." A century and a half later, when Hillary Clinton was born, that attitude still prevailed.
That year, 1947, the US had zero female senators, zero female governors. The Supreme Court, and the Oval Office of course, had only ever seen men. It was only really in the past 40 years that women learned they could lead and men learned they could be led by women.
That revolution in American culture is still ongoing, but the idea that women are naturally unfit for government is now so alien to younger generations that many feel uncomfortable even considering the gender of a political candidate. The realities, however, lag behind the attitudes. Women make up only about 20 percent of the US House and the US Senate, and about 25 percent of state government.
Before 2008, no woman had come close to being nominated for president on a major party ticket. Before 2016, no woman had come close to winning the presidency. But Hillary Clinton is not the only trailblazer on the long path toward someday breaking America’s 240-year, 58-election streak of male presidents.
Through the '70s, '80s, and '90s, women in politics underwent the rocky process of teaching the country that they could be equally effective and competent leaders as men, a process that occurred in parallel at workplaces around the country. They dismantled stereotypes, named and condemned sexual harassment, and slowly erased the novelty of female decision-makers, at least at the legislative level. Their work is our inheritance.

The argument was not aiming at her being unfit or fit due to her age, but for the monthlies to not be a "problem" past the mid-forties which she clearly has passed at that point in time!
I'm curious... all these "ladies are too hormonal to make rational decision" argumenters should be all too happy to force a male president to take adrenaline inhibitors, no? But that is a hormone too and it can cause VERY irrational decisions in big, strong men!

Her age actually made her WAY more viable, IMO. In general terms, a post-menopausal woman would probably make the best, most compassionate leader while still maintaining an ongoing, consistent sense of logical thought. Followed by a guy older than 50. Guys under 50 and pre-menopausal women, no dice. There are times of the month when my chick says her “fingernails hurt” and to be honest, that’s no good...we can’t have that. Same thing with guys under 50. Too much piss and vinegar. All of these are generalities. There are exceptions to every rule, naturally.

People are saying down in the comments that they would only vote for someone they agree with, and we should never vote for woman on the basis of her being a woman. Well, i am saying that you have missed the entire point. Vox is only having the conversation on women deserving to be president, ALREADY GIVEN they have every bit as qualified, every bit as deserving to lead as a man running for president.
‘i am not asking for you to vote for me because im a woman. But i am asking you to vote for me based on my merits. And i believe that one of those merits is that im a woman.’
And, looking at the sad excuse for a president we have today, can you really say with yr whole heart that trump is more qualified than Hilary Clinton for the President of the United States? Now, I am only making the comparison between her and Trump because they RAN for the presidency at the same time. I am not saying that Hillary is perfect, or that she is the best example of a woman for president, as she has made some mistakes, but we are only human arent we? But looking at Trumps Mistakes, if they can be labelled as mistakes at all, Hillary’s look abysmally small.

Like yes, Hillary wasn't a good candidate with all the nonsense. But she was bad in that classic way... Just even considering having Trump as a candidate made the world lose their respect for the US, and then you went and actually elected him... I mean, the US might never recover from this. Everyone thought Bush was bad, then Obama - more popular than anyone except Kennedy.. and then Trump. The final straw for most other countries.
Of course Bernie was the only sane option.

I'm sure if another less scandalous female candidate like Michelle Obama ran in the Democratic Party they would likely win. Jill Stein was a great candidate but the Green Party just wasn't big enough to sway voters for them. Hillary was qualified but just isn't trustworthy with all her controversies even within the Democratic Party. That's why the popular vote went to Bernie but Hillary was nominated regardless because of the super delegates.

"2 party system prevents the minority of winning"
Hillary and trump were the two most unfavorable candidates ever. Trump winning, is the minority winning and not only because he got less votes than Hillary, but because many (if not even most) who voted for trump, actually just voted against Hillary.
There are over 300 million ppl in the US and Trump was chosen by 13 million to be the republican nominee, and of the 60million who voted him into office, many just saw him as the smaller ill.
If you think that isn't "the minority winning" then you should look up the word minoity!

      "Unpopular candidate...hitler didn't even get 30%"
Depends on how you see it you are right out of the wrong reason or totally wrong!
First of he was pretty popular (much more popular than trump is in the US right now)
But yes Hitler got less than 30%, actually he got 0% of the votes (which is less than 30) as the Weimarer Republic (like Germany today) didn't elect the government leader directly.
But Hitler was elected as supreme leader by over 66% of parliament, so he wasn't a minority but a super majority candidate and this way they could change the constitution (pretty much like it would be in the US).
Hitler was voted into power by a coalition of nationalistic, Christian, centrist and conservative parties, while the only opposition came from the SPD (social democrats) and KPD (communists).

6:00 the question isn't if she could push it, it's if it would be a sage decision to do so. The one that shouldn't be president is the one that would answer "yes without a doubt" to that question

I agree with you on the without a doubt,But we do need someone that is willing to empty the silos before the silos get obliterated...

Then if that's the question, I think the more appropriate answer should be, "Yes I would if I had to if we've tried every other option".

maszlagma she had wayy too much dirt on her that people could use to sewer her reputation tbh. I’m all for a female president but Hillary was a bad choice to be pushed as the first real chance @ a female POTUS

Women should run more candidates. They seem to want to put all their eggs into one basket, or no basket at all.

Uhh over 100 women have been elected for congress in the last election... that may be a far cry from 268 (1/2 of the 535 seats in congress plus 1 president) but it's about twice what was previously there. And not a few of these women also RAN against other women instead of men.
Which means that in 20 years we might be at 50/50 as it should be. With the candidates elected for their qualifications or policy ideas instead of for what's in between their legs.
