  • The scariest part of Trump's first year as president isn't how abnormal he is, it's how normal he makes everything else look by comparison.

“Don’t normalize this” has become a kind of rallying cry during President Trump’s first year in office -- a reminder to not get too acclimated to Trump’s norm-breaking and erratic behavior.
But the real danger of the Trump presidency might have less to do with Trump’s abnormality and more to do with how “normal” he makes other Republicans look by comparison. And the concept of the “Overton Window” helps explain why our politics and media might be warped long after Trump’s presidency comes to an end.

A big part of this problem is cultural. It is the irrational insistence that everybody's opinion caries equal weight. It's the idea that the man-on-the-street's opinion about tax policy is equally valid as an economic professor's. The climate change denier's opinion is equally valid to the opinion of a climate scientist who has 50 years worth of data to back up his claims. Instead of a marketplace of ideas, we have the democratization of ideas. Popular belief has become more important than objective truth.
Trump is a distraction (and Reality TV show clown). While he is off tweeting about something unimportant, the general public is being slowly deprived of the things that are vital to this country's long-term success (affordable education, affordable health-care, good job opportunities, low tax burden, upward mobility, proportional representation in government, investment in infrastructure, investment in new technologies, environmental protection, blind justice, ...)

From my recent foray into figuring out my political ideals, and remembering this video, I’ve found I would probably be a centrist in my own country, but in America, I would be considered a left wing, even before Trump. The overton window has already moved from various other nation’s ideas of democracy and Trump’s made it worse. The cold war already made you very anti-left. From my perspective, the modern U.S. is equal to the U.S.S.R, not in military power, but from how I see the two countries, oppressive hellholes. There is a meme somewhere that fits this. A Star Wars: Episode III one. “You became the very thing you swore to destroy.” I feel it fits.

Josiah, where 18 percent comes from? On Wikipedia
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_2016
46 for Trump, 48 for Clinton
If you mean that many eligible voters didn't vote at all -- who's fault is that? Let me put it differently: half of the population that cares about politics voted for Trump. If you do not bother to vote - you should not be taken into account when it goes to stuff like overtone window

    • @dmitry5319
      @dmitry5319 Před 6 lety +1

Josiah - this number (18%) does not represent anything. Out of 326 mln only 215 mln were eligible to vote. Do you count the rest as Clinton supporters? Out of 215 mln only 128 mln did actually vote. Do you also count those who didn't for Clinton? If people didn't vote, you cannot know their political position, so they do not count for "overtone window"

Hillary may as well be a conservative or at most a centrist, and that was both the reason why she won the primary (Bernie seemed extreme left) and why she lost the general election (she wasn't left enough to represent a better option than Trump). The video says when Trump leaves office we'll need to deal with a conservative leaning political environment, but the reality is that we'll need to deal with an *even more* conservative environment, and the unthinkable (in reality, fairly centrist, but actually leftist and not just leftist in name) policies of someone like Bernie Sanders become apocalyptic outside the window of normal.

It affects everyone, both liberal and conservative, but that is NOT "fake news." The stories they report are very real and any reputable media outlet does fact checking to make sure their reporting is based upon the best obtainable facts.
When someone tosses around the label "fake news" just because they don't personally like a news story, that is an insult to the journalists involved. That person is essentially accusing them of lying or fraud.
Unfortunately, in this day and age, some people seem to see things in black and white and think a story must either be completely true or completely "fake news." They don't seem able to grapple with more subtle questions of how human bias may color or distort how true facts are reported. That's an entirely legitimate consideration when encountering any news story from any source.
"Fake news" is the fraudulent invention of a non-existent news story out of thin air. That's the kind of thing that Russian trolls did in an attempt to influence the election.

Not sure how to feel about this theory though. The UK Labour Party had a very radically left wing manifesto which sent everyone voting the other way...

That is what I did with my dad asked for a $1500 laptop when in reality I wanted a $1000 laptop and got it.

Watching this in 2022. Isn’t the Overton window a double standard? It can shift radical left too!

What is considered "left" in the US are mere centrist in other countries.

Out of all VOX's videos I love this guy the most. He is funny, passionate, entertaining and the way he explains stuff is simple to understand. As usual this video was extraordinary and it's content very informative.
