- Pressure is growing on the Government to tackle a growing crisis in Wandsworth Prison. Filthy, overcrowded and rife with violence - and this week we revealed a sophisticated criminal network of drugs gangs working inside the South London jail.

Prisoners are being left addicts with spiralling debt, their families threatened with violence outside, if they don't pay up. Now a new campaign has been launched to demand the Government improve conditions.
At a packed public meeting last night, former prisoners described it as "lawless", "inhumane" and a place where men were being left to rot - with little chance of rehabilitation.

I visited Ban Kwang Prison in Bangkok Thailand. An absolutely scary forbidding place! The warders rule in there, the prisoners look after the warders! The Thais have it right!
This isn’t the Philippines, and nor should we wish to emulate it.

I've experienced our penal system in 1985 ( 7 months ) 23 hrs locked in a cell, no TV, orPlayStation, no toilet in the cell, gym every 10 days, half a hour exercise daily if it doesn't rain, £1 canteen a week, 1 visit a month,
Prison doesn't rehabilitate offenders, it isolates them for the good of society.

Employment, adequate housing, strong familial bonds, stable relationship with a partner, a new non criminal social group, refraining from any substances are all needed to avoid reincarnation. These are better indicators

prisons need to be operated like schools. kindergartens for adults.. outside activities.. especially for short term stays

sections of society.Also the major issue is how many people are unfairly sentenced to prison just so the system can make a customer and keep others in jobs.

H.M.P. Wandsworth needs to close. Period. A new Prison needs to be built, on the site, forget selling it to the highest bidder. A new Prison, a new regime and new Prison Officers, a new profession, not wedded to the philosophy of the POA.

whayt they should do is give these prisoners a choice ya either go to college and learen a skill or get a job that they'll help them get and offer educational classes and its a case you do that get a skill and a stable job that we'll arrtange for them and if they dont do it then go to jail as a very very last resort not like it is now just don ot pass go straight to jail and its wrong cause im pretty sure most of the people in jail dont need to be there and it would be cheaper to do that but when its for profit then them parasitical companies are fillign their coffers full to bursting by ruinnign it on a shoestring so they can rinse the savings they make as a bonus cause if your in charge of where the moneys spent and if you save you then get that as a bonus so what incentive is there to investr properly when their essentially just robbing it and theyve prob got a contract with the goverment that guarantees a population level otherwise they wouldnt be in the containment business you should watch a film called ghost of the civil dead about a max security private prison in the near future its that same thing if im resposible for the budget but if i make savings thewn i get them savings as bonus then their just gonna run it at the barest they can get away with cause their in the business to lien thewir pockets not to reform people and this is where it leads and just throwing money at it isnt gonna work when its just gonna get pilfered by these parasite companies like g4s

I was in Wandsworth prison in 1981 and it was a pretty violent place. Although Brixton was even worse.

I was in Wandsworth hmp 15yrs ago. in may for a month it was actually ok.
I got out the cell a fair bit a game of football a couple trips up the gym and library and abit of freeflow.
went back in the following January to start my sentance and it was fucked 23hr bang up it was terrible I ain't gona lie I almost broke down.
It was so over crowded they sent alot of us to Winson green hmp in Birmingham which also terrible but the education system was decent they got us out the cell a bit.
food was better in Wadsworth tho lol

This overlooks the essential fact that prisoners who do not receive the necessary programs and education to transform their lives will repeatedly incur significant costs for you and others in terms of taxes. This cycle is an astonishing oversight in our approach to criminal justice and reform. MENTAL. But you completely failed to address the other issue raised in this story "selective hearing" from the tick and flick group ? is the involvement of some guards in smuggling illegal substances into prisons, which leads to increased violence and extortion. These actions, which allow them to profit illicitly, go largely unchecked. Curiously, the adage "If you cannot do the time, don't do the crime" is seldom, if ever, applied to these guards, pointing to a glaring inconsistency in how we address misconduct within the prison system itself.
I don’t think well-balanced people from nice healthy homes very often choose a life of crime just for fun. I think statistics show they didn’t stand much of a chance of joining civilised society: there’s a high proportion of young people who were abused as children or had undiagnosed problems.
We are talking about actual lack of food and hygiene at Wandsworth; two men to a cell with a toilet not even behind a curtain, pigeons inside, sewage sometimes coming up, one hour out of the cell each day when you would have the choice between goi outside, making a phonecall home OR queuing for a shower.
And I think I am right in saying that Wandsworth is also a holding place; ie some of the inmates have not even been convicted! We are not talking about our worst murderers and people who would never reform or get out. I believe the prisoners are entitled to basic safety, shelter and hygiene. The stories coming out of here are awful; one woman was on the phone to her son and he had an asthma attack. The emergency help buzzer in his cell was not working.
You know, if we want to bring back the death sentence, we ought to do it legally, not like this.
I like that the people of Wandsworth want to look out for the prisoners. They should do their time and leave in a reasonable state of health ready to join society. If they have come from awful backgrounds, how is treating them with more brutality going to fix them?

Agreed but Prisons should be about rehabilitating criminals, not making them bitter, angry, and resentful. The conditions make criminals more violent and makes them worse. Teenagers cut themselves so often in Prison, that guards don't even track it unless it requires hospitalisation.

I agree things have to change and this is a terrible situation but I wish the mother hadn’t said someone has to be held accountable. Okay, let’s hold her accountable. Too many kids are brought up not knowing right from wrong, accountability starts in the home.

And at the end of the day if reform does not take place via counselling, drug therapy and educational or retraining programs it will continue costing you the taxpayer forever!

Our Government was the architect of the Class A pandemic in this country - In 1995 they issued directives to the HM Prison establishment by briging forward draconian legislation from the 1952 prison act, that prisons should start testing prisoners for substance misuse, contrary to ministers opinion this had the opposite effect of identifiying, treating & prevention as people transitioned from herbal cannabis 2 hardcore class A use, because of the length of time it took for the body to excreate cannabanoids as opposed to class A drugs which have a 3 day life for a positive result as opposed to cannabis which has a 28 day life cycle in the human body. Prison Governors & the HM Ministry of justice/home office were well aware of the situation in prisons however they allowed it to perpetuate as it created a larger amount of recidivism & therfoe a bigger industry in the confinement of humanbeings & an industry they can exert their control over!!

When i was going to prison early to late 90s it was do as your told & always banged up in your cell & it didnt do us any harm.

Poor Derek Bentley was imprisoned in HMP Wandsworth before being hanged there, he was refused a reprieve even though the jury that convicted him at the Old bailey recommended mercy he was in Police custody under arrest when his accomplice Christopher Craig who was only sixteen so couldn't be executed shot the Policeman on the roof of the warehouse they had climbed on top of, the Home secretary refused all pleas and insisted his execution took place, how he slept at night afterwards I will never know.

It’s not the prison but the violent offenders therein. All prisons are dreadful and always have been. Maybe address the rise in violent crimes . Build more prisons eh? Private ones for profit; that’s what we’re being softened up to accept next

No, but it is for the benefit of society that a prisoner spends their time in jail on a programme of rehabilitation, so when they get out they have a chance of not reoffending. Otherwise their time in prison is a waste.

I got sent to life in in prison, in Wandsworth prison, for stealing a doughnut from a police officer. I have a documentary and a podcast about it...and I am famous for it, I have a Wikipedia article about me. It was a jammy doughnut, not a ring doughnut.

It's a nick. I've done time in civvy jail and military bird. It's punishment. Simple. Im still addicted to opioids and if i didn't get them in the nick id have got them outside. Some of the housing in the UK is far worse than prison. Get on with it. You are being punished and do your time.
