Thank you, Dr. Lee! To summarize:
    - Mistake 1: Communicate to impress. Solution: Communicate to impact.
    - Mistake 2: Not creating a fair exchange, only presenting data. Solution: Don't just bring data, consider each other's values to create a fair exchange.
    - Mistake 3: Not developing communication skills, focus too much on technical skills. Solution: Need to develop skills to communicate those technical values and beyond. Communications involve a wide range of skills.
    - Mistake 4: Trying to find opportunities. Solution: Make yourself discoverable.
    - Mistake 5: Communicating what you know. Solution: Articulate on your principles.
I hope I understood your presentation correctly. Thank you for the insightful analyses! Thank you also for providing the chapter markers so we can go directly to the section most relevant to us!

@@whypopme88 @bruyant Now that’s just cruel, you guys. Stop the hate please. Even if you think it’s true, have some grace and discretion. What Dr. Lee started was a good thing, and she had the best intentions to help all of us. This is exactly how good work gets done: by someone doing something good, then someone learning from the good and making it better. It’s the circle of life. It applies to everything and everybody. Dr. Lee deserves the credit for all her hard work, and absolutely no disrespect. Spread love, you guys. God bless you. 🙏🏽✨

    - Executive communications can seem difficult, but there are five principles that can make it easier.
    - The first mistake people make is thinking the purpose of executive communication is to impress.
    - When trying to impress, people puff themselves up and come across as inauthentic.
    - The solution is to shift the mindset to speaking to impact, not to impress.
    - The second mistake is not creating a fair exchange through communication.
    - People have different values and conflicts arise when those values contradict each other.
    - The solution is to seek to understand the values of others and find a way to create a fair exchange.
    - The third mistake is not being clear and concise in communication.

The first way an executive must learn how to speak is - how to not lie while not telling the truth - and the second is - how to lie while telling the truth. Master those two methods of speech and you’d be capable of replacing most executives in the US on a moments notice; a side benefit is that you’d be uniquely qualified to be a politician also.

I've noticed this trait in people at executive levels, management levels, etc. at the same time i find it wild this is a thing, and seen as a positive skill. we're essentially saying, to be effective in leading people, we must craft our words to lead people to a certain conclusion - while at the same time witholding information that don't fit that narrative. like any tool human's possess, this can be used for both good and bad intentions.

The issue I have with leadership communication is when people are manipulating their team to look good, look like a leader with overview, but on the extend of doing the actual work that they were hired to do, meaning their work is shifted to the colleagues. If these people then get promoted, I feel the need to quit. Like I did last week. Thank you co-worker for talking me out of my team, because there is only so much hypocrisy everyone can take.

Dr. Lee, your words are on point. During my time in the workforce, including a 20-yr Naval career, as well as during my three years in college, I have seen many individuals who try to impress(rather than impact). While many of them successfully create a solid first impression, the majority of those individuals often become exposed later afterwards. Thus, they fall flat on their face, and the same executives that they impress turn on them and never look their way again when discussing innovative ideas or projects

This makes me think, communicate such as to entice others into revealing their views, values, and principles, show that you listened by synthesizing it back to each, and then show your principle of finding a solution that fairly incorporates the interests of all the others. I think this approach would impact (not impress), keep oneself on a level playing field with the others, not put you into conflict with the values of others, and position yourself in a de facto place of leadership among them.

    1) communicate to impact (not impress): use data, show how to get from here to the goal 🥅
    2) what is important to them and what is important to you?: does it data fulfill individual needs of both parties thereby creating a fair exchange to make that goal happen?
    3) develop communication skills: to lead, negotiate, get buy in, to pivot, to navigate landscape (cultural background, educational diversity etc.,)
    4) position yourself, become discoverable: dress for the role you want analogy?
    5) articulate your principles, your thought process: thereby increasing the value you bring

Spot on. Communicating effectively to executives must consider what they need, why and when. Is it to enable immediate decisions or choices, flag up emerging issues for their attention, reassure them that all is on track, or what? For execs, nothing is more wasteful than being fed a bunch of data that serves no executive purpose or is simply untimely.
