RV Disaster! Wrecker to the Rescue!

  • The landing gear on this 5th wheel trailer collapsed while the owner was trying to hook back up to it in a parking lot and it fell to the ground. I brought the 4x4 wrecker out to lift it back up so he could re hook. Unfortunately the only thing to lift by on the front is the hitch itself, so I used an older flat strap that allowed it to still sit on the 5th wheel aged, then used a pry bar and a jack to slip it back out

    It took me a second to realize what you were doing with the strap, but once you started it all made sense. For all the people wondering why jacks weren't used under the front, when the stabilizers broke, there's no place on the front that was even closely rated strong enough to support the front heavy weight of the 5th wheel. There aren't a lot of secure/strong places on older rigs like that to be able to lift with that don't cause more damage than good (that's why their leveler jacks if equipped are normally farther underneath). The way this was done might have seemed sketchy, but there's an adage that covers it - to the effect that if it works, it's not stupid. Kudos for getting it back on the truck safely, Casey!!

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  Před rokem +14

      Exactly. Those trailers are toothpicks and the hitch itself was the only place to lift it from that made sure there wouldn’t be any further damage to the trailer. I’d much rather risk my $30 strap than risk someone’s trailer

    Casey, it is fun watching you shoot from the hip, so to speak, when solving unusual problems. When you do recoveries, you are all by yourself. When I was a field mechanic, I was all by myself. When you are all alone, you will figure out a way to get the job done. People with no common sense have problems figuring out how to do stuff. BUT, as capable as I was at being a field mechanic, I STILL have no idea how to do many of the things that my phone can do!! It is frustrating.

    The next time I buy a 5th wheel or even a goose neck trailer- I'm putting a D-ring right there on the front of it; or at least an eyelet ready to pin on a D-ring. But to be fair, I've been pulling trailers for 25 years now and I've never been close to doing something like this, so I kinda can't relate. lol.. I'm still welding on a hook point though.

      Yeah there’s not much for options to lift them from, and the only option that’s even close to hood is the kingpin that needs to go in the hitch. That’s why I used the flat strap and figured I’d just try to fish it out once the trailer was on the truck.

People who do rvs allot carry heavy duty screw jacks so they can raise and lower from the frame. I always wanted some three stage bottle jacks for jobs like this. A note that you can appreciate!
    In Michigan we use salt, thus NO Parking Brake is ever applied the problem is that some people who don’t know that, will jump in a car and when getting out Stomp on their parking brake pedal or yank the handle, sometimes severing the cable and thus Locking the car to its spot! Until help arrives. A towing bill was the only reminder I had to explain to my wife if she used the parking brake on the old 87 Dakota, when she arrived here from Germany! And yes she drove a stick! And the Dakota was a 5 speed, and had the second short lever for 2H, N, 4H, and 4L. Even on our sloped Drive way, we never had a problem, back then. Boy I Miss that truck!

    This just appeared in my feed. That was a very sketchy situation and I was holding my breath when you were putting the jack under the king pin. That guy probably has no business driving a fifth wheel, esp. with that truck. Great problem solving. I was wondering how you were going to get the strap out.

    Extend the boom, extend the winch wrap the cable around the king pen let the winch pick it up.
