Ford, Chevy, and Dodge all stuck. Can a Jeep pull them out??

  • A Dodge truck was out getting firewood when it got stuck in the mud in the Volcanic ash flats, so Chevy was brought in to pull it out, but got stuck as well. Then the Ford came along to get the both of them and also got stuck. All three were heavy Diesel trucks and sunk to the frames, so there was a Cummins, a Duramax, and a Powerstroke all in a row. Unfortunately some very cold weather came in that night and the mud turned to ice, freezing the trucks in place. A couple days after they got stuck, I took my @Jeep TJ-6 down to see if I could them out.
With them being frozen so hard into the ground, all three were VERY hard pulls with the @harborfreight Badlands winch, but by using the other trucks as anchors I was able to get them all out. I did have one issue when one of my cheap Amazon special soft shackles pulled apart while not even close to its rated load. So I replaced is with a @YankumRopes soft shackle and put twice as much pull on it without issue. Quality gear definitely matters and I learned a cheap lesson with that failure.
Oh, and I said @MattsOffRoadRecovery to get more views, let’s see if it works!

WHY I LOVE CASEY LADELLE’S CHANNEL: It doesn’t feel like a wacky TV show, there aren’t any (toy) helicopters, and Casey seems like a regular guy and not a gazillionaire (Dave). Also Casey has never click-baited me or (very obviously) set up an extraction (Matt). I also like that he doesn’t have a film crew or slick editing. I actually hope his channel never grows to that point.
How many people truly understand the difficulty in filming such things? Unless you’ve done it you probably have no idea, but it adds two to three times as much time and effort to film something dynamic, if you do it right. It’s a TREMENDOUS amount of added work. Love him or hate him, you should respect Casey for what he’s doing here.

Just think of it as “tension” in the winch line.
The tension (minus pulley friction) is the same in the entire length of winch line.
If the stuck vehicle takes 10,000 lbs of pull to get out, and you have 4 lengths of line coming off, each line will see 2500 lbs of tension
    Jeep 2500 lbs
    Dodge 5000 (two lines)

Go to your layout and imagine you cut across the middle cutting each cable. There is a tension of "T" throughout the system. So at the 15:00 point there would be 4 cables to cut, so you have a 4:1 mechanical advantage. If your winch pulled 500 lbs the stuck truck had a force of 2000 lbs on it. Intro to Statics 101.
No charge, just like you. 👍

    • @garywoodard5759
      @garywoodard5759 Před rokem +3

you must also account for angle! all parts of line in the system have equal tension, but when angled away from direction of movement of the load there will be reduction of force for that part of the line equal to tension times cosine of the angle between the part in question and the direction of movement.
curiously enough the angle part will also have a lateral component of force and will affect the direction of travel, changing the angle.... Intro to Dynamics 201....🙃

People try to go through the channels where the water moves and creates thin ice. Lot's of snowmobiles go down. Those can usually be fished out from the bridges they are under. The cars and pickups the ice has to be cut and they are dragged to shore. Insurance doesn't work if you go through the ice, so these people are up the channel. ( creek)

Entertaining once again. It is excellent that you explain and give logical explanations. Most people do not know about winch rating and line pull. I am having a 17,000 lb winch installed on my Landcruiser this week so that I can get good pulling without taking all the winch rope off.🇦🇺🍺

I learned something today, I didn't know that the number of layers on the winch reduced the power.

Grumpy reminds me of my grandpa so much, his voice is the same, his attitude and everything. Especially when Casey was doing his “winch math” and grumpy just started mumbling randomly over him. It’s hilarious and I love it

Casey's drone skills are off the chart! Flying while driving? Then right between the Jeep and the Dodge! He must be flying drone competitions on his off time!
(yes, it's his fancy 360 camera. Sarcasm is how I show appreciation)

You are correct, but explained it in the most complicated way. The line tension is the same throughout. Every snatchblock has two lines in and one out so it has two times the tension. So in the setup on the white truck you had 48k lbs maximum pulling on the truck with a 12k lb winch.

Ya, but he was trying to explain how he was spreading the force across 3 anchors so that they were more likely to stay put compared to the combined force on the stuck vehicle.

Great video, as always. At the 15:00 mark Casey was standing in the triangle made by the winch, the truck being towed, and the truck acting as an anchor, i.e. the bite. If the rope breaks it bites you. Never, ever stand in the bite under load, which of course Casey didn't do.

Only 3 stuck, amateurs 🤣. We had 6 stuck one night. The first sank and when the other 5 stopped they sank where they stopped 😉. Took all night and then we walk into Bob Big Boy just as they finished vacuuming the floor and we were covered in mud 🙄.
Needless to say the waitress got a nice tip for putting up with us 🤣
