  • Gillette shares shaving tips on one of the oldest shaving debates: with or against the grain? The Answer: use what works best for you. To find the products that work best for you click here: gillette.com/en-us/products/r...
Today we're going to talk about one of the most common questions about shaving. Should you shave with the grain or against the grain? The grain of your beard just means which way the hair grows, so when we say with the grain, this means you're shaving in the direction the hair grows. And we say against the grain, it means you're shaving in the opposite direction the hair is growing. Simple enough, right?

With a straight razor you don't have to worry about spending $20 on new razors or worrying about getting hair stuck in the blades.
However with all of these positives there is one negative, you may happen to cut your face apart.

I always like to shave against the grain. I like my face to be ultimately smooth and shaving against the grain is the only way to achieve the ultimate smooth face. I shave first pass with the grain, second pass against the grain, and if need be a third clean up pass in whichever needs clean up. I use a 1968 Gillette Slim Adjustable Razor (an all brass razor. Many I know also have the pre 1961 Gillette Fat Boy Adjustable) with various of blades but Gillette has a variety of DE blades such as their "7 O' Clock" and "Silver Blue" brand of blades. I use a double edge razor (safety razor) because the truth is you only need one good blade to cut your face...not 3, 5, 7, whatever and double edge blades are only around 0.20 cents a blade that can give you two to four shaves per blade.

Some people tend to not shave against the grain since their faces may not handle shaving against the direction the hair grows. It may not work for them as it causes irritation, pulling and tugging or sometimes ingrown hairs for them. Rather they go across the grain which is across the direction the hair grows.

I am 20 years old and I shave with safety razor using coconut oil and shaving soap. I don't have a full beard growth yet, so it is still developing. It's thin and uneven, and with many bald spots. This is normally how my shaving routine is:
    1. I have my shaving soap and shaving brush in a cup and filling it up with hot water as possible. 2. Hydrating my face with warm water (or shave after shower). 3. Putting coconut oil on face where my beard grows. 4. Removing water from the cup and making a nice foam with my brush. Paint the foam on my face for 2-3 mins.
    5. Rinsing my razor in warm water and then I start shaving my first pass with the grain. This goes very well and is very comfortable. I have a light and nice pressure. 6. Rinsing my face and applying foam on my face again for second pass - this time across the grain. This is more aggressive on my face, and if I am not careful I might as well get few small cuts. 7. On the third pass I go against the grain. This is very aggressive on my face and I always want my face to be smooth as possible, but I don't like shaving that direction at all. Sometimes shaving that direction goes well, but I most of the time get redness, irritated skin and cuts. Especially my chin and neck.
This is annoying. Sorry for the long comment, but I felt I had to type down in details how I'm shaving. Because how can I stop getting cuts and redness? Should I stop shaving against the grain? I think I always push harder and over shave my face on the third pass, because I want to get my skin smooth as possible. I got to be more careful? Any techniques I could consider trying?

If you had a lot of acne in your teenage years or you have curly or even "black" facial hair you really shouldn't go against the grain. If you fall into there categories the best way to get a close shave is to shave with the grain and then across the grain.

If it does then you are doing it wrong. When shaving against the grain NEVER ever put weight on the razor. Also afterwards splash lots of really cold water on your face. This will quickly contract your pores and thus align your facial hairs so that you don't get ingrown hairs. And apply after shave to disinfect any micro cuts you get.

MF yea that’s common. Shaving against gives a cleaner shave but it’s increases chance of irritation and ingrown hairs.

Thom Hardcastle then there’s a lot of losers all the ad did was tell us men to behave better and treat women better I don’t know how that’s offensive unless ur some loser incel who resents women u could argue to pandering and there just doing it because it what’s morally the trend now that’s a fair criticism but ads in the 80s were all about the family now priorities are differnt they realize there market isn’t white people anymore they see the shift and ur scared of it

HIIIPOWER 000 I think the ad really just came off as preachy and partially misandrist in it’s message. In short it alienated it’s core customer base who had quite frankly had enough of paying for Gillette’s overpriced products to begin with. Get woke go broke. Cheers 🍻

get a safety razor. these multi cartridge razors are a rip off. using a double edge razor blade is also better for your skin as you dont have 3 or 4 blades "gliding" over your skin at the same time. and dont use gels, but shaving soaps and creams you leather up with a brush.
you'll get a smoother and better shave.
